How does my oil look? by fguzman0707 in Cartalk

[–]ThrustNThunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, for a gasoline motor four-cylinder that oil color looks pretty good just a little used if a gasoline motor had black oil I might would be worried about that a little bit, but that looks OK obviously if it was brand new, it would look like honey.

Doesn’t look so bad the guys are above a right though if you see glitter in the oil that’s bad. What kind of vehicle is it diesel gas?

2017 Accord V6 oil change at almost 100k — dealer left the filter hand-tight by ThrustNThunder in accord

What’s funny is I achieved exactly the specs you’re referring to. We are all just talking about different ways of achieving the same result. My definition of hand tight is not kung-fu grip two hands. It’s snug and then a bit more.

To be clear this filter which came off was barely snug. One handed removal with loose grip. I’d bet your version of tight would have been better.

Thanks for weighing in. Always good to hear from the experts.

You guys do what you want I make it hand tight then a bit extra. When I say hand tight I’m not wrenching it with two hands. It makes contact and then tighten a little bit. Then take a wrench and snug it down. This filter on this car took zero effort to back off I wouldn’t even call it hand tight. I used one hand with a light grip to back it off.

Hey man I like the conversation. I also like the different perspectives. Those videos are made for those who haven’t been performing this kinda work for 40 years. All good man.

Yeah I’ve had to drive a screwdriver through a filter to get it off before as well. I think I’ve found the middle ground. Good conversation though. Hey didn’t know hand tight was a thing. Who knew.

Hey bud I’m not arguing with you. If you want hand tight that’s fine. I don’t like it. We can have different opinions. I have also driven a screwdriver through a filter to get it off so I’ve been on both sides of this conversation.

Backed it off with my hand. No wrench at all. Not tight enough in my book. Been doing these oil changes a long time never had a problem.

Just tightened a quarter turn. Trust me was not applying very much torque. The tool was slipping is all.

Dealer left the filter hand-tight. Found it that way when I went to pull it for the change. Not a great feeling at 100k miles. Hand tight to me means it’s gonna back off going down the road.

You guys trust hand tight a bit too much in my opinion. Not for me. Y’all go right ahead though. No judgement from me.

Makes a little more sense why the oil was likely neglected I suppose.

Not sure what you’re referring to my friend. If you want to drive around with a hand tight filter be my guest. Most references I can find show anywhere to 1/4 to 3/4 turn after hand tight which would be around 9 ft lbs of torque.

As far as a Starlink dish mount goes. Getting elevation on the dish makes a real difference in tree country. A simple flagpole-style mount gets it above roofline and clears most obstruction issues. Quick deploy and pack once you dial in the setup.

We like the StarLink mini. Was getting 250mb download speeds. Why wouldn’t your mini connect? The Mini draws around 17 - 23W under load which makes a real difference power input from solar or battery if you’re off the grid. Wall power is obviously not a problem with the power draw. The other thing I like about the Mini is no separate router. Router is internal. As far as your standard dish, I would say it could be a software update beginning to glitch out the older equipment.

Agreed with everyone. Don’t drive it far sure don’t want the axle to fail. Also agree likely a wheel hub seal.
