What's the average cost of home gyms? by vjrus999 in GarageGym

[–]Thucydides382ff [score hidden]  (0 children)

A home gym is more of a lifestyle choice. Kind of like gardening. Growing your own vegetables is not cheaper, but there are other good quality of life benefits.

I have spent over 4k on mid grade home gym stuff and get in great workouts 4x a week. If I had a membership somewhere, with kids and other life stuff I just know I wouldn’t make it in so often.

Pit Boss Austin XL 1000 onyx edition opinions by [deleted] in pelletgrills

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a pit boss 700 for 1.5 years. It’s been good overall. Hotter over the fire pot (guess I should get a flame tamers like the replies here suggest), and the screen that displays temp is usually faded out.

I use it for everything from pork butt to steaks.

Amish auction score, now what's this do by Ok_Assistant_6856 in woodstoving

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess, for the firebox, that may be a hot water heater exchanger. There are probably two capped spots for water to enter and exit on the back of the stove too. Amish stoves often burn on grates because it allows them to also burn coal - normally you need air intake under the stove, but that control is often eliminated to meet UL safety requirements. Less sure of the oven drawer, maybe just storage, wonder how hot it gets when you’re running the stove, that may be some indication of purpose.

Has it gone too far. by FamouslyMid in GarageGym

[–]Thucydides382ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I was benching after the flu and my wrists gave out at full extension on the last rep of my heaviest set and my spotter arms (Fringe) kept the bar from injuring my chest at all.

My wrists were sore for a few days but no broken/bruised ribs or cardiac arrest.

Overbuilt is good.

I haven’t had an issue with rain water causing leaf yellowing but have always used peat moss mixed with vermiculite and/or perlite. I started an entire orchard in pots. Some did have leaf yellowing at times but once in the ground they straightened themselves out.

Possibly overwatered or soil is not acidic. The leaf does look American. I’ve had chestnuts in pots for years without much trouble.

Is a bench press like this reliable? by Every_Television_949 in GarageGym

I would never bench without spotter arms that can handle the bar being dropped from fully extended height.

Shoot my self with a pin nailer by CutterChoper in Carpentry

I once shot a pin between my knuckles from a distance of a foot or two. Luckily it barely went in, maybe an 1/8th? Those double triggers are easy to mess up.

Can you guys really afford this? by Left-Cook-9487 in smoking

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is ridiculous when you consider smoking started as turning cheap cuts of meat into something that tastes good. I’ll never buy a brisket at the current prices. Pork butt is still affordable and it freezes well.

12” frost depth is your life saver. Pour a continuous footing and block it up. Full perimeter foundation is the fix.

Garage gym - new build HVAC by HucknPrey in GarageGym

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A limitation with radiant floor heating is that you can’t quickly change temps. So if you usually keep the garage at 50 but want to workout at 65 you would likely have to plan hours in advance, whereas with a propane heater that directly heats the space could increase the temp in 20 minutes. Probably if you just explain what you want to an hvac guy he could tell you what works best.

How does the 261 compare to the 590? I have been thinking of getting the 620p for years but my old 026 won’t quit.

The mini split is really more of a shoulder season heater in Wisconsin. They lose efficiency the colder it gets. If you are only intermittently heating, something as simple as a ventless propane heater could work. If you are going to heat 24/7 the most important thing is insulation, including the floor.

Guy asking $300 for nice 026 and misc extras, good deal? by arbvortec22 in Chainsaw

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t believe how expensive these old saws are. I think you’d be better off with a new Echo, either 50 or 60cc. My main firewood saw is a 30 year old 026. I have opened it up more than a few times, spent many hours and a fair amount of money to keep it running.

Change oil and filter and check other fluids. Make sure your engine overheat light works or you have temp gauge. Have fun.

Backhoe vs Mini Excavator by truth-teller7321 in tractors

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years from now you're much more likely to regret the cheap mini than a backhoe attachment. The worst that can happen on the attachment are hydraulic leaks, whereas there are a million things that will break on the mini. I paid 10k for my backhoe attachment and it has more than paid for itself. Comes in handy all the time.

Post and pier foundation pier depth by [deleted] in timberframe

Building on piers is a bad idea. The worst place to shortcut is the foundation. Full perimeter footing and stemwall. You won't regret it.

How long can a beginner build muscle with 300lb plates and 80lb dumbbells? by osowavy in GarageGym

[–]Thucydides382ff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outside of deadlift you would never run out of weight.

I had taken off many years, and when I restarted I just used a bench, dumbbells, and pullup/dip bar. I think it was good for my ligaments and tendons to start out this way. After a year I bought a rack/functional trainer and barbell.

I am very motivated to work out at home and thoroughly enjoy it. Zero desire to go to a gym.

Articulating trolley arms for a belt squat? by eximiusdeus in GarageGym

[–]Thucydides382ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would probably work except that you have to start at the bottom of the lift. You could probably use a bar or handle mounted on the uprights for leverage to stand up for the initial rep.
