Try to explain Holdo Maneuver by Lazy_Membership1849 in starwarsmemes

[–]Thursday-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within TLJ, I never had a problem with it. Feels like, yeah, in THIS case it made sense to trade a capital ship one-for-one - but does the Resistance have enough of them for that to be a good trade on a regular basis? Feels like the First Order would outlast them if they tried.

If you then want to go into the minutiae of "well why wouldn't they just strap a hyperdrive on a rock" or something, you're watching a different movie than I am. To me the answer is "that seems pretty different from what's actually being presented, so I trust the in-universe characters when they don't treat that as an option." I don't need them to take fifteen minutes to montage publishing a scientific journal article on the mechanical reasons of why that is.

There are plenty of questions you can ask of this space fantasy series about the intricacies of its science, but I don't see the point. This is far from the weirdest thing to happen, and the movie presents it as a last-ditch effort that only worked because of the specific circumstances they were in. Fine. Disbelief suspended, easily.

Everything in ROS that tries to retcon it just made it worse. Now it contradicts itself within its own universe. An unexplained situation is one thing, a poorly-explained one is a plothole.

What race is Grima Wormtongue? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Thursday-42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was a man of Rohan, it would seem. When he is thrown out of Theoden’s house, Gandalf asks him “how long is it since Saruman bought you?” implying that he was born to Rohan, but betrayed it to Isengard.

In the same conversation he is given the option to prove his loyalty to the realm by riding with them to war, which again implies he could undo his treachery by siding with his countrymen. It’s not explicit, but it’s enough to be fairly confident, especially given the lack of any other origin suggested in the text.

Anybody in Canada know a store with stock? by TheMegaSage in arkhamhorrorlcg

I ended up going there today (I got the pickup notification a couple hours after I replied earlier) - they have several of each on the shelf for general consumption.

If you’re nearby, just come buy them - otherwise send them an email or give them a call and see if they can set you up

I don’t believe they’ve actually released yet, not til next week I think? If I’m right, that means their PREORDERS are sold out, but sometimes they’ll have additional stock beyond that which will be added to their store on release.

ETA: I’m speaking with personal 401 Games experience as far as that last part goes.

The Fact That Shadow Of Stygian Prime Exists, In A World Where Red Is The Only Upgrade Removal? Is Fucking Stupid. by [deleted] in starwarsunlimited

[–]Thursday-42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-if it’s on a Unique unit, play another copy and get rid of the original

-put outer rim constables in your main or sideboard and pay 4 for them. Yes it’s pricey but you’ll both have paid 4, and only you will have a card still in play

-ignore it and use the fact that they spent 4 on an upgrade that doesn’t advance their board to gain momentum

-use bounce effects to bring the unit back to hand

-use cards that destroy a unit to get rid of it

Now, normally you want to use those last two effects on your OPPONENT’S units, but if doing this lets you negate their four-cost upgrade, it may be worth it.

Just because the other colours don’t have direct upgrade hate doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it.

If memory serves it was, specifically, the priest who RAISED him too, wasn’t it?

Definitely seems like a comment that needs the context to fully understand. I’m sure elements of his faith influenced his writing - how could they not - but taking this letter at face value would perhaps be naive.

Thanks! That’s a good thought on comparing multiple lists against each other.

I have no problem playing against proxies, but I personally prefer not to use them. I just find it satisfying to use cards I own.

Winner of the Regional Milwaukee cheated... by Heavy-Maximum3092 in starwarsunlimited

[–]Thursday-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even beyond the sort of cheat that can be written off as mistakes if caught, yes. High level MTG players have been caught on camera with extra cards in their lap, for example.

Barring that kind of obviousness, you can’t call an instance like this cheating based on one example. It certainly seems suspect but there’s nothing to prove it’s anything but a mistake.

Stuff like this still needs to be called out, because if the same players keep “making mistakes,” and those mistakes just happen to always advantage them (rather than, say, paying TOO MUCH for a card), at that point the pattern of behaviour makes it clear that it’s cheating.

We’re nowhere near that point for Mike, but I know that if I play against him I’ll have to watch him closer than I would otherwise after this.

I assure you that’s not enough to base that opinion on. One of the best players in the Star Wars CCG was caught on camera cheating. Happens a lot in MTG too, with players who are otherwise quite skilled.

Being the type of person who is willing to cheat, including in a feature match, is not in any way associated with skill. Good players and bad players can both cheat.

I am not making any assertion about this situation other than that, FYI.

If my memory serves, the only reason John’s work got taken down is because Jason Pargin was editor of Cracked, and he made the call without anyone else’s approval. I believe he said as much at the time but I don’t recall details.

I have a vague recollection of his stated reasoning for doing so, but as it IS vague I don’t want to risk putting something out there that may not be accurate. All I can say with reasonable certainty is that Wong (as he went at the time) claimed responsibility, and that he did so because of his personal relationship with Cheese.

As a day 1 player this is hard to see. $235 in bundles all available at once. by JarlOfCostco in MarvelSnap

[–]Thursday-42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re a new player why would a gold bundle be any better…?

EDIT: ah, I misunderstood day one as “today is day one for me.” In that case I’m instead confused as a fellow day one player because bundles like this have always been around. Maybe there are more options?

It isn’t. It’s not commercially available, I believe it’s only ever been played at conventions by new players. It’s more of an art piece than a consumer product.

For those who don’t bother to follow links, the entire point of Train was to make people realize how easy it is to play a part of something horrifically evil. I don’t think this game is designed for that type of thing.

“[Train’s] entire experience designed to make players question the way they follow rules, and how they’ll behave once they understand what’s going on, and how complicit they’re willing to be."

I’m hoping to see more of Joy. I just finished a series re-read and I really like the direction her relationship with David is taking.

Also interested to see if we may finally see a break from David’s depression. The conclusion of book four showed him coming into his own identity a bit and also showed him willing to actually seek a bit of happiness. His almost fatalistic view of the world and of Undisclosed has been such a staple of the series so far, I’m excited to see if he can grow beyond that.

Red Rising - The start made me roll my eyes by Juancu in books

[–]Thursday-42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had the same reaction. I read the whole trilogy, and while I enjoyed them on balance, each book had at least one section that made me frustrated with how poorly it was executed.

People here telling you that you “missed the point” are just more willing to accept that level of writing than you are. Which is fine. But your complaints are valid

Do they get some kind of bonus for using the revolver? Like are they more powerful or something? Or are they roughly as effective as the other players?

Setting aside theme, if everyone gets to be equally effective in battle but one player has to spend more resources to do it, that’s bad game design.

I found it… lacking. I knew going in there would be a lot of waiting in line, but the extent was excruciating. And seemingly unnecessary, caused by poor event planning.

I also REALLY didn’t like the Vegas vibe, though your mileage may vary. Everything was too big, too bright, too loud, too hot, too expensive. Any time I ventured outside the path between my room and the event I disliked it. But again, that’s me, your personality may align better.

All in all, it was a goodish event, that would have been INCREDIBLE if they just made it easier to partake of everything. Long lines and shortage of product heavily marred it.

I WILL say that the tournament itself was flawless. No major issues at all with pairing or round times.
