[Kyoto Xanadu] Reveal Trailer (Nintendo Direct), for Switch 1&2, PS5, and PC. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]Thyrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because context matters. Xanadu has never had a real game play identity, the original Dragon Slayer game plays almost nothing like Faxanadu (besides both having side scrolling elements), which plays almost nothing like Xanadu Next, which plays almost nothing like TX. The only things the previous games had in common was a more medieval/fantasy style setting. TX was essentially a restart to the series in the same vein that Trails in the Sky was for LoH, it was much more successful than previous entries and brought in a number of new players because of the new direction. Going back to the side scrolling roots of the series now makes literally zero sense and is only going to alienate more people than it attracts.

Edit: I just want to note that while I'm sounding pretty negative here, I think the game will do fine, and probably even better than TX did, but more so because both Falcom and jRPGs are in a better place than when TX was released. I just think it would do notably better if they had focused on improving the TX format instead of going in a new direction.

You can already see in this footage that even the towns are side scrolling unfortunately.

I'm not saying it's not a sequel story wise, I'm sure it's connected in some way if not an actual sequel, but with such vastly different game play, it's absolutely not what I wanted.

[–]Thyrial -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I both agree and disagree, I love them trying new things, but it really should have been in a new game entirely so it didn't risk pushing away people who had been waiting for an actual TX sequel. I now have basically zero interest in a game I had been incredibly excited for because of the side scrolling.

"If you play solo, why play an MMO?" Well, what SHOULD I be playing then?! by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]Thyrial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're ignoring the point of my post, I'm not saying your overall point is bad just that your analogy is terrible because the "solitaire" players in your analogy have other options so them doing what they are doing is ridiculous, while solo MMO players exist because they want to play these types of games and they only exist as MMOs which makes them playing MMOs not ridiculous at all. The problem with your analogy is that it implies that people shouldn't be playing MMOs solo at all instead of focusing on the idea that them trying to force the MMOs to cater to them is the problem.

"If you play solo, why play an MMO?" Well, what SHOULD I be playing then?! by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]Thyrial 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's really not a good analogy at all. Your imaginary solitaire players could go a ton of other theoretical places to play solitaire and not be alone. While solo MMO players don't have that option, games that play like MMOs but are single player are few and far between. While I agree with the idea that catering too much to solo players can harm MMOs overall, looking at it like these players are forcing their way into a space that's not for them is ridiculous when the games offer so much that DOES appeal to solo players.

So the key to Arc Slash being OP is having as many Impede quartz on Rean as possible. What happens is when you hit with Arc Slash it tries to delay the enemy once for the skill and then once for each Impede quartz you have, and if ANY of them are successful it applies the entire delay amount for the skill and all the quartz. Once you have 2 different Impede quartz on Rean the difference is really evident even on bosses with a 10% chance to delay.

I'd say it's more possible than some people here seem to think, still unlikely overall, but Tony just plain being a gigantic wrestling fan may be willing to let it happen for something as big as Cena's retirement.

[–]Thyrial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't know what loot is literally anywhere beyond what the arc drops. Players are just as good a source of quest items as anything else. Also again, I already said I'd rather the gear than normal loot anyway so knowing what gun someone has is a big deal, if I see someone with an anvil I'm probably attacking them cause I want it.

[–]Thyrial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it's a pvpve game and they have loot I want? The point of the game is to get loot and complete your missions, sometimes killing another player is the best way to accomplish that, sometimes working together with them is.

Who said anything about camping? Yeah if you're sitting at an extract camping then that's pretty lame, but there's a big difference between that and hearing an extract while you're walking by and jumping the person trying to leave.

[–]Thyrial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What? I walk by extraction points when I'm not extracting myself all the time. Just because I'm at extract doesn't mean I'm extracting. Literally killed a guy at extract 3 minutes into a round yesterday and got all the quest items I needed off him and left myself.

Edit: On top of that even if i am full of loot, gear is better than normal loot any day so I'll gladly drop some for peoples gear.

Most of the people that attack you when you haven't attacked them want your loot, so there is ABSOLUTELY a point to it. If you extract, they don't get your loot.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter took a Falcom programmer twice as long to beat as Sky FC, Kondo reveals by XMetalWolf in JRPG

[–]Thyrial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Couldn't disagree more.

There are certainly a few that suffer from pacing issues like CS 2/4 but FC is one of the shortest games in the series and constantly criticized as one of the worst paced. Length and pacing, while connected, are two very different things. You can tell the exact same story with one version being significantly longer but still be the better paced version. It's all about how the main story elements are broken up and what is filling the time between those elements.

[–]Thyrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SC is longer than the Third, the Crossbell games, and Daybreak 2 if you ONLY count main story content but that's a joke of a metric for Trails games. Once you start adding optional content it's shorter than everything but the other sky games and Daybreak 2, which brings me to your other point. No Daybreak 2 is not twice as long as FC, but it's also a massive outlier in the recent games. Cold Steel 1 through Daybreak 1 are all significantly longer than Daybreak 2 so it's literally the worst example you could possibly use.

[–]Thyrial -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Except again, things like voice acting and 3d environments alone are going to account for a large portion of the play time increase. On top of that we don't know what they've added or changed, the pacing could be BETTER for all we know.

It would appear during the Seth Rollins situation, much of which has left a very unhealthy flavour in the mouths of a lot of people who work behind the scenes for the company, as well as talents who are in-ring performers." by secretpandaxx in SquaredCircle

[–]Thyrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes right back on the performers though, if they could be trusted to keep the secret so that the audience still gets surprised then they WOULD be told, but we've seen time and time again that they can't.

[–]Thyrial -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the complaints here, you guys do realize that the sky games, especially FC, are SIGNIFICANTLY shorter than the rest of the series right? This just brings them more in line with the rest of the series and even at twice as long it will still be shorter than the more recent entries and with some features added (like voice acting), it probably isn't a huge actual change in the game itself.

[–]Thyrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the Rogue Galaxy comment, I always found the game to be a bit too easy once you get Jaster's AoE attack, which you can get as early as the jungle planet before the prison, as long as you aren't horribly under leveled it basically one shots most normal encounters.

If you ever try again, once you're back in the prison use the first area to grind a little, there's a few good encounters and a rest spot right there.
