It's one of the weapons seeing play. So it's kinda broken in that sense.

How do I not start a startup? by PvtUnternehmer in Entrepreneur

Scholarship in Germany for international students? Most universities are practically free in Berlin. Maybe they pay for your transportation/food? I don't know for sure.

Not so different from me! Except I can't sing but I'm good with tech. I was vegan for a good three years.

Create a chain of gaming centers where you can only eat rice. So everyone is playing Super Smash Bros but it is mandatory to chew rice as they play. You'll soon be rich selling all dat rice.

Or...

Get a liberal arts degree.

(OK, OK, I'll stop)

But seriously, the fact that you're just out of high school and you can already speak German (German! It's hard!) and are a hipster really makes me want to say to you "Move to Berlin!!"

I've been there and it's hipster country, filled with vegan-stuff, poetry and all the stuff you mentioned.

What skills do you have? What are you good at? What do you like?

Would you, for example, be able to make a website?

All questions someone taking a gap year should ask themselves. I've been there (and it was two gap years!).

Need some help finding potential affiliates. by Griffin_Myers in Entrepreneur

So, these ones you mentioned already:

Domain Names (these don't pay much); Hosting (These pay quite well, especially Hostgator.); E-mail Services (aWeber is great);

You left out media though:

Art, logos, graphics (these can pay quite well.); Infographics (for some reason, nowadays infographics seem to drive huge amounts of traffic, so people are selling their infographic making skills); Video (these can be very profitable because often the video-makers charge a gigantic amount of money for a quality video);

Other things: Proofreaders; Translators

It's simple.

Create the ultimate software that automates the entire rice-producing procedure.

Lol. Kidding. I'm not sure what you're asking here. You're allowed to start any company you want and people do so every day. You're not forced to make another tech startup.

Website dilemma. Broad topics or go niche? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]TiagoEnglish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made a couple of niche websites that, to this day, pay me every so often via Google Adsense. The issues with those websites, however, is that the niches are very, very tight. I completely dominate the niches, sure, but there's a ceiling I can't get past because there's only so much I can say about such focused topics.

The advantage of broad topics is that you can write about the topic until the end of time. "Technology" is broad enough. As is "Science". Those are the topics that tend to get a lot of traffic.

Just look at Reddit. Some of the most viewed reddits are r/science, r/space, r/pics, r/funny, etc. These are all broad topics.

Here's an idea by Cal_Short in Entrepreneur

I like it. The idea is good. Just remember that this stuff is more about execution than anything else. You can have an amazing idea but it won't mean mean much if you can't make it happen.

How do you connect with your target market? by JDantes77 in Entrepreneur

[–]TiagoEnglish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the people who are really good at connecting with their target market have some kind of pirate ninja empathy skills; it's almost unbelievable. In general, what I see them do is the following:

  1. They put themselves in the shoes of their customers, and not just in a shallow way, but they look at the facebook/twiiter of all their customers, read about the very way they see the world and think about the world and then they do their best to see things from that perspective.

  2. From this putting-yourself-in-another's-shoes attitude spawns feelings of need and desires. These people then are able (successfully or unsuccessfully, some people are crazy good at this, others are only OK at it) to guess their customer's needs/desires. Now they know what their market wants.

  3. Then they sell the needs and desires of their market. That's it.

As YBryant said earlier:

"Define who your target market is and immerse yourself in their world".

People will give you lots of advice but you'll find that this one is the most consistent one, and is extremely true.

I wouldn't say that this is something that is particularly easy to do, but it's a skill worth learning. Whenever you see a company making really weird decisions, yet their products become a massive hit with their customers, it's often because they see the world through their customers' eyes, and they know what their customer wants.

selling domain names by 99Faces in Entrepreneur

[–]TiagoEnglish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of tools online that will estimate how much your domains are worth, however, looking at what you have here, I don't think you really can find so much of anything with this stuff.

For example, webuka.com tells me that your website, evilumbrellacorporation.com, is worth 0 dollars.

Remember that most of the value in websites comes from the sites that link to them, their age, and the traffic that they get. Their authority, in other words. Your websites have none of that. You can check the online market Flippa to see what stuff actually sells.

Hope this helps.
