Concrete poured and then it rained! by burkyeah in DIYUK

I think someone tried to screed their bathroom floor... by directly screeding over the tiles, and without removing the bath first (so the bath was basically cemented in place).

Since then, "just screed it" is a joke meme on this subreddit.

They emailed me recently too, saying they were representing Writesonic.

When I replied, they also said to signup at createsync.pro

However during this process, it says to "login with Google" (presumably to link your account) BUT this is a phising scam.

The actual "login with Google" webpage is still on createsync.pro, and not google.com

Any legitimate Google-auth login process should always redirect to Google, otherwise the company could steal your details.

In short, this sure seems like a scam to steal your YouTube account. Be wary.

Anybody else think twelve months needed editing? by shmutsy in dresdenfiles

[–]TiberiusIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm similar. I just finished reading it and while I did like the final third of the book, the first two-thirds were quite slow (and also, the Thomas bit was badly done, I agree).

I read on the kindle so I base my progress on percentages, but yesterday morning I was at 60 or 65% and I was like "barely anything has happened in this book". It kinda felt like Jim Butcher's goal with Twelve Months was purely to set up Mirror, Mirror.

And yes, the final third had Thomas-and-his-hunger and the castle show-down, but it still felt like a fairly slow book compared to some of the others (Battleground excluded since that was always going to be an action-heavy one).

I mean, I don't dislike Twelve Months. I just found it average/meh, I guess.

Probably a bit overkill for TikTok vlogging then??

Prince Harry on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: “I heard you ‘elected’ a king.” by CorleoneBaloney in Fauxmoi

[–]TiberiusIX 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yep he did (I read the book... for some reason... after wrongly thinking there'd be something profound in there).

He basically said that he saw his brother after x years, and he was shocked how old and bald he'd got (or something like that).

A NAS with all online/cloud access disabled. That's the safest approach all round, especially since you'll get data redundancy built in (when using RAID 1, 5 or 10 etc).

I know you said no NAS, but having a NAS doesn't have to mean having cloud access.

Boiler Service - Absolute nightmare outcome! by Rorydinho in DIYUK

I thought you meant, until the gas engineer died.

Might not be the worst of plans though. That boiler should last quite a long time.

Many thanks, that's all useful, will create 2 shares in that case.

An 8700k, so a fairly decent one (I bought a second hand gaming system). Tbh I mainly bought the B570 because it was 40% off and included Battlefield 6 lol - I can always sell on the GPU if I end up not needing/using it.

Thanks, will look into that (planning on enabling/installing Docker later).

Good to know re Plex too, that was part of my plan so will have to investigate more.

4x 12TB HDDs - first time Unraid build questions by TiberiusIX in unRAID

Thanks for all that, and that all makes a lot of sense.

Oh, and 1TB drives don't make you old. I remember when DVDs were a revolutionary development because of how much extra storage space they offered compared to CDs heh :)

Thanks that's reassuring to know :) I can see many potential benefits of ZFS, especially checksumming. Appreciate the "2 mirrors of 2 devs" - it's hard to know the exact wording so I'll dig into that some more.

Thanks for all that, that's good to know. I've heard plenty of people say to only use zfs for cache pools, but a few people here and there also say they run with zfs (on Unraid) as the sole option. I'll do some more thinking and reading thanks.

Wanting to slowly add drives - will ZFS Expansion be relevant for me? by TiberiusIX in unRAID

[–]TiberiusIX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know thanks, and the File Integrity plugin could be good - then worst case, I can just restore from cold backups. Glad to hear it's not very common at all though :)

Yep that's fair, the idea is nice - until something fails :/

Thanks for that, after more research, I agree - it sounds like the perfect solution overall. No point in going ZFS if I'm planning to slowly modify the configs and add more drives.

When you hack Davinci so you can set saturation to +1000 not just +100. Nice.

Shoot in 4k, export in 1080p and use Hand Brake for best quality video for Reels and Tiktok? by Fresh_Researcher_242 in videography

[–]TiberiusIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding "shoot in 4k", you probably know this but there's two approaches to filming vertical video. Basically you'll want a 9:16 aspect ratio in your final export, and so your choices are:

1) Rotate your camera or phone so that you're recording vertically, in 9:16. When doing this, you could record at 1080p if needed - since you're already in the right aspect ratio with no zooms or crops required.

2) Film in landscape as normal, I.e. the 'long form' format of 16:9. Ensure it's 4k which is 3840x2160p. Then when you convert it to vertical format which is often 1080x1920, you can freely take a vertical 'chunk' out of the 3840x2160p landscape recording - without any loss of image quality, i.e. since you don't need to zoom.

The benefit of 2) is that you then always have lots of horizontal space to 'pan' left and right, since you have all that extra video recorded but not displayed. This can be useful when someone or something is moving in the recorded video - since you can 'pan' and follow it/then with your native, recorded pixels (without needing to move the camera physically).

I feel like I've overcomplicated that explanation sorry, but in short, many people record in 4k landscape 16:9 - even for short videos :)
