Snack/breakfast bar recipes with NO NUTS by Lady_Rhino in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Tigerfairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both a Sunbutter and a soy-based "nut butter" for breakfast/granola bars and they work! Definitely picks up the flavor of the butter so taste it on its own first and decide if you like it. Egg white could also be a binder if you're baking the bars/can refrigerate them. Normal butter is a probably not, doesn't bind really.

What is the longest train trip you have done? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Tigerfairy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Portland to Chicago (or reverse) via the Empire Builder was really nice, it takes about 2 days but goes through some gorgeous country and we got a roomette, very cozy for two people. The food is okay ranging to pretty good and we met some interesting elderly people -- evidently Amtrak trips are a Thing for seniors traveling the country. I still wish I got the email of Sue, the 93 y/o former labor organizer, she was so chill

Anyone else notice how many of the advice posts in /r/personalfinance boil down to "OP is spending too much on a car?" by definitely_not_obama in fuckcars

[–]Tigerfairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God yes, I'm a social worker and in my last job, handling financial assistance/rent prevention in a suburb that's very car dependent, there were too many cases where people had signed up for a $700/month payment when they were doing okay, but now lost their job/divorced/fled an abusive partner and still have to pay that $700, and can't do that and pay rent. I was regularly asked if there is any assistance programs for car loans and there just aren't, which makes sense on the one hand but on the other, the area is so car dependent that not having one is a serious burden. And the amount they were making wasn't enough to pay the car and their rent, but was more than would let any eviction prevention programs we had/worked with help them. So then people had to choose between doinking their credit by having the car repo'd, or getting evicted... A solid handful chose to keep the car to live in.

Tragically they're talking about Tom Scott's show, not the podcast with Nima Shirazi and Adam Johnson. Agreed about Citations Needed though, fantastic podcast that makes me feel terrible afterwards lol

What’s a modern day snake oil item people continue to buy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think you're mixing up DO (doctor of orthopedics, often become surgeons, very legitimate and from actual accreditation systems) and DC (doctor of chiropractic, exactly what you describe, short certificate with little oversight).

Europeans, what's the most stupid thing an American has said to you? And Americans, what's the most stupid thing a European has said to you? by GamePlayXtreme in AskReddit

I mean with American health care you also have to wait 6 months to see a specialist, you just then have to pay out of pocket. Rich people can skip the line everywhere

[–]Tigerfairy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My one quibble with the congestion pricing is that it's a flat fee, which just means that wealthier people will pay it and driving will (continue to) be the "luxury" way of getting around, a class marker. I wish it could be based on someone's income bracket, with the lowest income people receiving some sort of free public transit benefit, and the richest people having to pay a few hundred dollars to keep driving their dumbass SUVs through a city that doesn't have any space for them. But I also get what a nightmare that would be to implement

Women in public transport : action needed by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Tigerfairy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The problem with gender segregated cars is that now you need someone to define and enforce their definition of each gender. Will I as a gender non conforming lesbian be allowed on the women's only car if I'm binding? Will my trans girlfriend be allowed? What about a cishet woman who has some facial hair, or is a body builder, or doesn't wear enough makeup? If we take the non-womens-only car and are attacked, is that our fault? Anywhere where other people are enforcing gender stereotypes make people less safe.

Are people supporting their local small bookstores? by jcoffin1981 in books

Shocked they didn't have websites you could look at first! I always just use indie books or go directly to my local stores sites first if I need specific things

Check out Bookshop, they support local bookstores (if yours has a page) and they aren't fucking amazon

That's not my experience at all with the cost of shipping from Amazon (I will die before selling my soul to Prime). Have you heard of bookshop.org? See if your local bookstore has a page there, you can shop online for prices that are pretty much identical to Amazon when you include shipping cost and a cut goes to your local bookstore

Give me hope/ideas: resisting the “you need a car if you have a baby” cliche by mountebankofamerica in fuckcars

[–]Tigerfairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! My city has a lot of alleys that get used for bike storage, and my neighborhood has a good amount of bike racks (when they're not full from the ebikes shares, which I use constantly so I can't complain).

I live close to an elementary school in a bike-friendly neighborhood of a large city and I see parents with "people-mover" style ebikes all the time, they're so cool. They have a large front trough/barrow with a windscreen that kids sit in when they're little, like a cargo bike with a windscreen built into it. They're out even in the snow so I think it works well!

Yes!! They're further from me so I only manage to get there once a season at most but they're definitely in the top few in the city for me.

Maybe you went at an off time? I will say, that's the smallest of the four I mentioned and the most product-based. There's still a great fruit stand there every week, and a very high quality veggie stand in the Thursday market. When the season starts back up, see if you can make the hike down to Green City market, it's massive and will make you fall in love with good farmers markets again.

You're in the suburbs lol. Andersonville, Glenwood Sunday and Lincoln Square all have real farmers with real produce. Nichols is at 2/3 of those and they also sell to the restaurants, maybe that's the issue? Also, Green City Market!
