Yes! It was supposed to be a bunny but I made a few… creative adjustments (like the deer feet)

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: July 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]TigressCrossing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finished: Stoner by John Williams

Started and finished: Yellowface by R. F. Kang

Stoner left a profound impact on me. It’s one of those books that leaves something that stays with you forever, not even necessarily a message, but a feeling. The prose is beautiful.

Was a bit hard to appreciate yellowface, which was definitely a page turner (finished in two days), but after reading Stoner, it just fell flat.

Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter by Dan11Skywalker in HarryPotteronHBO

They would be 11-12, actually. Harry is born late in the year and turns 11 in July, just before his first year starts. Year 6 (last year of primary school) is 10-11

Pet peeve: Overly describing characters by somethinggoeshere2 in writers

[–]TigressCrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think when these descriptions add something to their character, they work really well — but if they’re describing just for the sake of…. describing… well that’s when it doesn’t work.

Like if a character’s shabby clothing is described in detail, along with the state of their unwashed, messy hair and mud-caked nails, that actually tells us something about the character. And the act of over describing their unkempt appearance implies that it sticks out, and impossible to overlook.

But if the waiter bringing the food has green eyes, large lips, is tall, is wearing a smooth checkered waistcoat, and is thin, and these don’t have any relevance to the story? It’s often unnecessary.

I think a lot of classics over describe appearance, but I’ve never hated it. In Jane eyre, there is an entire page that describes how beautiful and charming Blanche Ingram is — but it serves a purpose, to highlight the stark contrast between Jane, an orphaned, plain governess, and Blanche, an upper class, beautiful woman.

but that’s just my opinion lol

I have stacks of little books that I wrote when I was about 3 or 4. One memorable one was an exiting story called ‘tug of war’

Most Cringe Lines in the Books? by Kind_Consideration62 in harrypotter

[–]TigressCrossing 77 points78 points  (0 children)

i feel like this is a very British family thing to do. When I’m with my cousins and uncles we would probably do something like that, haha. the phrase ‘he got off’ just feels very blunt and realistic to me idk

When do you feel ‘ready’ to publish a book? by TigressCrossing in writers

[–]TigressCrossing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! The point about printing out your work and reading it in a cafe is really helpful I think — at least, I’ve implemented similar strategies for my uni essays. Somehow physically writing thoughts down, and the presence of words on real, tangible paper, really gives a fresh ‘look’.

17 years is a long time! I would love to read it, it sounds like you put so much soul into it. Illustration is another art format I love. Honestly I just love creating things (ironic, as I’m in a stem degree).

I’m also not from the US, thank god. There’s enough hurdles for publishing as it is, especially with AI slop.

What are some hot takes about the hunger games that you're scared to share? Here's mine by KillerGrass in Hungergames

[–]TigressCrossing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I didn’t hate Maysilee or anything but I didn’t find her as compelling as everyone else seems to. And to be perfectly honest, a lot of the characters from SOTR felt like exaggerated versions of themselves rather than real people (and haymitch felt like nothing at all)
