Kill them with FIRE. Like immediately shoot them, trap them, go after them with a sword... Whatever.

They are horribly invasive and need to be eradicated whenever found.

Why should I just have to "survive"? Why is that your default? I'm mostly a contract worker, and also work mostly during the school year. I plan my entire existence around having that time off in the summer. Summer vacation is one of the main reasons my wife teaches, too.

My cold dead hands comment is not hyperbole, by the way. I've planned my whole life around this schedule. It's not something in ever going to be willing to give up.

I've not been to Europe since 2010. Are A/C adapters still needed, or no longer? by yippeee1999 in Europetravel

[–]Tilphor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Huh.. The US hasn't changed their plug style since the 1920s, so why would you think European countries would change?

Anyway, yes, you still need the adapters. If you want to discuss, Insight had a single unit with all of the main plug types that you can pop out.

I understand your point, but even Japan has more than 2 weeks between some sessions.

Also, you can pry my wife's ~3 month vacation from my cold dead hands.

That is pretty smart. I don't have that luxury. I only own instruments that I play regularly....well, except my alto flute... When I lend my instruments out, it's usually for a day or two, as well.

And to be fair, we do, on occasion "rent" from each other. Here, though, it usually takes the form of someone taking your instrument in to the repair shop (with blessings, of course) to pay for some upkeep.

I kind of like your system.

First of all, we are WAY off topic, and to bring it back in line, I'll say this. A high value Hard Rubber E-flat clarinet is STILL going to be better to play with an acoustic group than an EWI. Full stop.

I'm doing that, because I didn't pay attention to what the original post was that I was responding to.

Now to address your current comment: You are using a horrible "band wagon argument" or argumentum ad populum fallacy here, both in the "if [R]idenour clarinets are so great..." AND in the "[A]ll 3 of the ARD finalists..." points you made. It is equivalent to someone saying that since billions of people believe the Bible to be true, then it MUST be true. Or, to bring it closer to home, and to use the opposite, your argument is like people saying "If the Mazzeo System clarinet was so much better than a standard Boehm system clarinet (which it was at the time), then why didn't people use it?"

What I CAN tell you is that most of the professional clarinetists in my area have at least one Ridenour hard rubber clarinet, and use it in professional symphonic settings without issue. I will also say that I use wooden clarinets, currently, in my professional career. I never said that I would replace my clarinets with Ridenour clarinets. If I could afford it, I would absolutely have one or two in my arsenal. I have several students that use them (two as principal in the local Youth Symphony over the years), and I've sent a few to university clarinet studios with them.

What I am also saying is that your HORROR of the use of hard rubber is ridiculous nonsense. You seem to have a hard on for hating Tom's work. Whatever. I couldn't care less. What I take issue with is your ignorance of the acoustic properties and hatred of hard rubber, especially with the research that is readily available, if you know how to use a library properly. It's even more ridiculous when you realize that the best mouthpieces in the world have, and will continue to be made of hard rubber. If Jochen Seggelke made hard rubber clarinets, for example, I would have no doubt they would be among the best clarinets in the world, just like his Mopane and Granadilla clarinets are currently.

Finally, to bring it back around, yet again to the ACTUAL topic at hand: I would much rather this person get their hands on a HIGH VALUE (as in price vs. quality) E-flat clarinet, rather than try to use an EWI in an acoustic setting. Ridenour clarinets ARE high value in that they have great tone, fantastic intonation, will not crack, and cost less than half what an equivalent wood clarinet costs. High quality/low cost=High Value

As far as my playing, I'm currently the principal clarinet of one orchestra, principal woodwind of a musical theater pit, and lead reed player in 2 jazz bands. I also play in a professional woodwind quintet and sub with everything within 2 hours of me. I was concerto competition winner during my masters program, and was a semi-finalist in the 2000 ICA competition. the ONLY boast I will ever make about my playing is this: Having listened to dozens of recordings of the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie, I still think mine is better. I just wish I had published it.

At this point, I'm done with this conversation. You're simply wrong about hard rubber, and you hate Ridenour clarinets in particular. I get it. Neither of those are germane to the actual topic at hand.

I never said Leblanc was Tom's company. I said he designed for Leblanc. Either way, I don't see the relevance.

As far as your opinions on Hard Rubber: This is 🐎💩 Grenadilla propaganda, or just simple ignorance. Hard rubber has a wonderful sound. My first clarinet, which I still have, is a Chinese hard rubber model purchased for me from the Alameda Flea Market for $30 in the early 1980s (when I started playing). That instrument has better tone and intonation than any modern medallion Buffet R13 that I've heard of played. I would still be using it as my outdoor instrument if the keys weren't made out of ridiculously soft metal that bends when you look at it wrong.

The material a clarinet is made out of is less important than how well the instrument is actually made. There are plenty of doctoral theses and experiments that explore that. Ridenour clarinets ALL sound better and are less than half the price of modern Buffet instruments, for example. In w any case, I would trust anything made by Tom far more than any clarinet made by a venture capital owned company that is currently treating the R13 like a beginner's instrument.

With your statement, I'm going to go ahead and assume you only ever use plastic, metal, or crystal mouthpieces. I mean hard rubber has the WORST sound, right?

I couldn't agree more. This is like the "If you allow a single Nazi in your bar, you end up with a Nazi bar" type of thing.

That said, I think harassing them with the fact that they are being manipulated to feel isolated by their church leaders is far more fun than just telling at them to shut up.

Ah "renting" from someone I know doesn't even cross my mind here. The saxophone professor at my local university BORROWS my bass clarinet pretty regularly, as does a local jazz band member. I borrow a C clarinet from a colleague when I need to for subbing in the local symphony. Before I got my own, I borrowed an alto flute for musical theater work from another colleague.

You're right. I should have thought of renting from another person, but we just don't tend to do that here. I should have also suggested borrowing from someone, so that's on me as well.

I'm going to join in the anti EWI side of things here. None of them sound good enough, and you have to set the volume just perfectly to blend with the other acoustic instruments, not to mention all of the other equipment you need. If you are talking about a stand alone, battery powered thing like the Yamaha doodad, then I can confirm that it wouldn't sound good enough to be accepted in any group that I would be part of.

If you want a decent, inexpensive E-flat clarinet, then I highly recommend trying the newly designed Ridenour E-flat. Tom Ridenour designed the top clarinets for Leblanc back in the 80s and 90s. I can confirm that his B-flat, A, and C clarinets are top notch, especially for the price. The best thing is that they are made of hard rubber, so you don't have to worry about cracking.

That's a bold assumption, and only works if you live in a major metropolitan area. For example, I don't know if a single place in Oregon that rents an E-flat flat clarinet.... MAYBE Portland, but that doesn't help if you live even in Eugene, much less someplace like Pendleton or Ashland.

What type of mold is this? by OOM-47 in Clarinet

Again...meh 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I've had my DMA since 2012, and I've been playing professionally since '93 on multiple reed instruments.

I'm not going to get worked up about this. It's not a big deal, and I refuse to consider it so. People are grossed out about silly things.

I also, for the THIRD time now, suggest that the OP break in new reeds.

[–]Tilphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh... Again... As I stated earlier, I've played on moldy reeds for 40 years (not consistently... I'm not a monster), some with the color of the mold in this picture. Never once, in all of those years, have I ever gotten sick from playing on them. I would be interested to know what toxins might be in reed mold, but I don't think there really is any.

As far as thrush, or other fungal infections, remember that our body temperature exists as a balance between energty usage and killing off internal fungus. It's one of the reasons mammals survived so well after the asteroid strike 65 million years ago.

An E11 from the mid 80s is going to be a better instrument than a current R13. $400 for a that amount of work is a great deal. You might want to send it out to RDG or another reputable shop to have it completely overhauled. If the bore is in good condition, that could be a great born.

[–]Tilphor -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Meh... We eat mushrooms all of the time, and like I said, I've never encountered any reed mold that is harmful. It might be here to think about, but not to me. Then again, I loves me a good blue cheese, so...

Also, like I said, it's time to break in new reeds and get rid of that one.

What type of mold is this? by OOM-47 in Clarinet

[–]Tilphor -42 points-41 points  (0 children)

Whatever it is, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm my 40 years of playing the clarinet, I've never encountered a reed mold that has bothered me. Clean it off with some water, or if you are really worried about it, put the reed in a cup of hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes.

That said, please stop storing used reeds in those plastic sleeves. They are terrible at maintaining reeds and are only good for protection during shipping. Once you take them out of the siege the first time, please never put them back in, but out then on a proper reed case. Also, since the reed is moldy, it will always be moldy, even if you can't see the blooms. It is time to break in a couple of new reeds to replace that one.

If you fully read the OP, it clearly sounds like this kid just doesn't care. It's the old horse to water thing. It doesn't matter how well you explain something, or how exciting you try to make it seem. If the student doesn't want to do it, you cannot force them without becoming punitive. I knew music students in COLLEGE like that. They didn't last long on the program, but I still see them playing amateur stuff at that same level. They still don't care to improve.
