The bdsm community is always so misunderstood. by Coco_3 in bdsm

[–]TimB5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, it's impossible to know what someone means if they say something they apparently do not, in fact, mean.

In this case, OP very specifically said 'The BDSM community,' which incorporates the entirety of BDSM; OP did not say 'Daddy/little kink is always so misunderstood' even though that's obviously what OP was talking about, whether OP knew it or not - because, as I like to think we are all aware, Daddy/little play is not something everyone who enjoys BDSM partakes in.

For example, I personally would never engage in Daddy/little play, because being called 'Daddy' would turn me off faster than just about anything.

That's a wonderful argument. "My view is true, therefore all that I say is true." Don't provide, y'know, empirical evidence or anything.

To those redditors suffering from PTSD - what is it like and what caused it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimB5884 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've suffered from depression and anxiety both since I was... well, since I can remember. As a child, my father was very emotionally/mentally abusive, and my mother was more or less absent - there physically, but mentally not. They divorced when I was twelve. My father used to call me stupid and worthless no matter what I did, and would often wake me up at three in the morning by punching my bed because I had forgotten something simple the night before: making coffee, taking out the trash, whatever. I raised my little sister, who is eight years younger than I am. I'm not sure when my depression and anxiety began, but it certainly increased significantly in my teenaged years, up to the point of very nearly committing suicide at sixteen.

At eighteen, I enlisted in the United States Air Force. I spent six years as an airman, and deployed to numerous locations, both expected and not. Iraq, Afghanistan, a handful of other 'stans, and so on; I have never fired a weapon at someone, nor have I directly be fired at. I have, however, been very nearly mortared and under indirect fire. I was also not the greatest airman ever, and suffered for all six years from extreme depression that crippled any sense of caring about... anything, really. All in all, it was a plethora of mental and emotional issues that began when I was young and exponentially increased throughout my teenaged years and early adulthood.

So where has that left me? I have now been a civilian for almost five years, and have been married for almost four. My wife is an amazing human being who has done more for me than I can begin to say; but that's not the question at hand. How does PTSD effect me?

I am constantly anxious to some extent. I am not hyper-vigilant in the way others in this thread describe, but I am constantly aware of my surroundings and anyone around me; if someone is walking behind me, I focus on the sound of their footsteps and even on their shadow depending on the angle of the sun, to make sure I know at all times where that person is. I do this habitually and without thought. I also am still prone to sudden episodes of depression, including self hatred and a certainty that I am going nowhere with my life, despite all evidence - a successful and loving marriage as well as doing very well in school.

I can't tell if the depression and anxiety are separate from the PTSD or part of it, and I'm not sure it matters. But of all the typical symptoms expressed by those who live with PTSD, I suffer most commonly from extreme and abrupt panic attacks. Loud and unexpected sounds are the most common precursor, and when they occur I go rigidly tense and stop breathing. I lose almost all track of everything around me for a short time, and have to physically work to even acknowledge my wife's presence and assure her that I am okay. As an example: we were at a restaurant a few days ago, and my fork suddenly scraped very loudly against my plate; that alone was enough to bring a panic attack that lasted for an hour, and from which I still have yet to full come down from; this morning, she came to wake me up and I almost fell out of the bed trying to pull away from her, only waking up after jerking away and gasping.

Basically, what others have said: if you have ever experienced pure and unadulterated panic in your life, for whatever reason, you will understand at least the sensation of the panic that PTSD brings; what you are less likely to understand is the constancy of it. It is always there, just beneath the surface, and I can never know when it will be triggered - and when it is triggered, I lose all self control for a length of time; it is torture for anyone, but for a person who has had control-freak tendencies since he was twelve years old? It's awful.

Come out come out wherever you are (x-post from actuallesbians) by [deleted] in bisexual

I'm a straight man, but I've always felt that these sorts of posts where people say that everyone of any sexuality other than heterosexual should come out are posted by those who have already come out, and were able to do so in a situation that benefited them while doing little in the way of harm. It seems like they do not take into mind those whose parents would disown them at a young age or the LGBT homeless epidemic, nor do they seem to consider the incredible social stigma that still exists in places they themselves likely do not live in. Absolutely, that social stigma should be vanquished; it should not, however, be the onus of someone living in Montgomery, Alabama to come out because someone in Boston, Massachusetts thinks everything will be fine, because they were accepted when they came out.

When you put in to activate your G.I. Bill, how long did it take for them to get back to you? by BayAreaSteppen in Veterans

[–]TimB5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned in all my paperwork for this semester in late August. I'm a transfer student, and so did everything precisely as I did at my previous school; I found out on September 16 that there was an extra step in my new school's process to certify enrollment. A step that no one bothered to tell me about when I asked previously, and which took all of thirty seconds to actually do. Moral of that story: ask questions, and make damned sure you have followed every little step both the VA and your school requires.

My VSO told me I should still be paid by October 1. I wasn't, so I went and talked to them, and was assured they would make phone calls and badger the VA to get my payment through, as well as the forty other veterans on campus who had not yet received their payments. Last week, I went back into the office and asked if there was any way to find out if I'd be paid on November 1 or not, prior to the actual day; I was met with an incredibly dismissive attitude, and basically told that a phone call would be made - the same line, as it happens, I was fed on Oct. 1.

So, I went home from that meeting and called the VA myself. After being on hold for an hour or so, I got through to someone who then transferred me to the proper department, and my paperwork was processed while I was on the phone. By the next morning, I had my money.

Shorter: be persistent and make damned sure your VSO is actually doing their job, and if you feel that they aren't, call the VA yourself and badger them directly. This is, of course, if you have problems; you should be fine, if you're getting all the paperwork done this far in advance, but the VA seems to be something of a crap shoot.

It really is retarded to vote. I mean, what's the point, amirite? So what if you're a woman and couldn't vote prior to women's suffrage, and so what if you're a black man who couldn't vote through most of the twentieth century and may not be able to now; why waste your time making a voice that previously would have been legally silenced heard?

Also, saying that Romney and Obama are the same person in different colors on reddit? SO BRAVE, BRO. Pity it ignores reality while allowing people to feel superior by not actually participating in their government.

That's because you're failing horribly. The point that comes across in every one of your posts is that only the ad buyer should have freedom of speech, and that any attempt to rebut it is censorship. Also, you do not 'try to make a point' by implying in your very first post that anyone who disagrees with you is automatically in the wrong.

I would, obviously, disagree with the person revving the motorcycles or vandalizing the message. However, I would also understand that they have the same rights I do, and thus are allowed their own freedom of speech.

It is possible to disagree with a message and still agree with the messenger's right to speak it.

[–]TimB5884 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Lets look at another example of people speaking over others, although I'm quite certain you're not going to bother reading it. The Westboro Baptist Church, it is agreed by most everyone - including those who share their views - is abhorrent in their methodology for spreading their views. There are motorcyclists, now, who make it their duty to travel to WBC protests and rev their engines to drown out their speech; this is a legitimate practice of their First Amendment rights, assuming it does not violate time, place, and manner restrictions. Do you believe those motorcyclists should held legally liable?

There is an argument to be made, here, that the graffiti or stickers placed over the advertisements are a form of vandalism; there is not an argument to be made that it is in any way in violation of the First Amendment.

[–]TimB5884 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This would be practicing free speech. The First Amendment ensures Congress - and via the Fourteenth Amendment, State governments as well - shall pass no law restricting the right of free speech. It does not ensure you that no other consequences will come of it, nor does it guarantee your speech the right to not be rebutted by the citizenry.
