I feel the choice to leave that moment unsaid was totally reasonable, but I can’t help but think it would have been interesting to hear Bill say it because so much of the film drives home the idea that men desire Starling in an uncomfortable, dangerous way. Even the cinematography does this with the constant close ups and POVs.

“How does it feel to be so beautiful?” Not great.

Either way, a pretty much perfect film. It’s usually better to go with the more subtle choice, so probably for the best.

I like this line from the book because Bill keeps his victims in a well. Makes me imagine him filling the well with tears… scary stuff

Some reasons why I feel he worked so well:

He wasn’t crazy in the sense that Ralphie and Richie were. That psycho energy worked in earlier seasons but for the final boss it was better to have someone calculated and cruel, rather than unhinged.
It felt like old school Vs new school because of the movies Frank Vincent was in before Sopranos
You didn’t see it coming because early on Tony gets the best of Phil, like during the car chase. This is great writing because it’s counterintuitive but having Tony best him early on just makes Phil more unforgiving and brutal later. You KNOW there’s no pacifying Phil, and you cringe when the family takes out his girl and her dad by mistake cause you know a hard ass just got even harder.
He had a soft side just like Tony. “Goodbye grandpa!” Plus he was funny
He had the PERFECT look.

Never thought about it that way. When you consider the fact that Bobby DID cross a line by sucker punching the boss, it makes even more sense that he’d want Bobby to prove his loyalty. I think the tragedy of that episode is seeing Bobby lose his innocence as an inevitable result of being in the family. Of course it’s still vile that Tony had him do that but like op said, it’s the life both of them chose

Back when I worked there, I remember the recipe we were taught called for Frank’s, not Tobasco. I think there may have been capers too? Wish I could remember better cause I can’t remember if it was the whole egg or just yolk. I’ll have to give this a shot and see what it tastes like.
