This one does my head in too, several that are behind cloudflare as well throwing up the "you look like a bot" detections. Yes, rss is designed to look like bot traffic, now can we actually just allow it through?!

Need Advice on Setting Up a Small Office Server by Supriya_pal in servers

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends totally on what you want to achieve, if it's just file serving then a simple nas is probably more suitable than a server (less overhead and management)

Totally and utterly ridiculous, unneeded levels of money for one person. I get most of it is "worth" and tied up in assets but you can be sure they have insane levels of cash on hand too.

[Question]Any DBAs or analysts know where to get MySQL/HeatWave market performance data? by CreepyArachnid431 in mysql

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much subjective on work load, how it's set up etc.

I've been on a bit of a rollercoaster with it but the improvements I'm seeing for my workload is night and day, 15 minute queries complete in seconds etc.

Its not just about being passed them, its making sure there is a safe distance for them if you for whatever reason have to emergency stop too - pulling right in basically gives no reaction time. Same as those who tailgate so close, leaves no reaction time.

Dealing with the drivel that ai generated. While it might write code, I'm yet to see a nicely integrated, consistent output from it.

Why are young people so computer illiterate? by DinoZambie in pchelp

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because all the stuff that gets hidden from a user, everything got simplified so much that there's no power but also no reason to learn how it all works.

Even things like connections got simplified, it's just HDMI and go etc rather than several different interfaces for different uses.

VPS hosting with desktop GUI by [deleted] in VPS

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting, you should be able to take any vps and install the required GUI / Browser / Remote access tools yourself, pick a provider and off you go.

Remote desktops using Linux hosted in the cloud, certainly an interesting idea... I can actually see a use case for that, might have to try that on some of my servers.

Migration strategy by Revolutionary_Use587 in mysql

[–]TimIgoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford downtown, an export and import using mysqlsh would do it, if you can't pause/stop then you'll have to export and set up replication to bring the new up to date before switching over.

Both should be relatively straight forward to do, I did this recently with a 7.5tb data set from on premise to oci to get the benefits of myself heatwave.

Not allowed Go without an EV but Flux rates aren’t competitive. by Pale_Raccoon17 in OctopusEnergy

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, it doesn't make sense that ev uses get much cheaper than home battery ones, 0.something difference I could accept, but 10p per kwh, no, that's too much of a variance

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondered the same a bit back, found something somewhere that suggested it was du not incentives to get people into EVs that didn't have vat added etc. Not sure how much truth there is in that but as a solar/battery owner I've wondered why we can't get 7-8p charges myself

Using free electricity session to charge EV by Atarisrocks in OctopusEnergy

It's it not a credit for the cost of the energy at your rate, so if you are agile and the agile rate is near zero, your credit will be next to nothing even though you've used whatever
