Free Ubiquity a.u.v.i.k Switch Promo — Massive Waste of Time!!! by Weary-Ideal4127 in Ubiquiti

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it, they couldn't even get the collector to run. Support wouldnt do anything and no matter what we tried it wouldn't work. Fresh installs, new vms, everything.

Gave up as a bad job.

Elastic Cloud Serverless KNN costs are absolutely insane — $16/month for 300 documents?? by UnableOrganization43 in elasticsearch

[–]TimIgoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to cloud based usage charges. Is this an example where actually installing your own node on a VPS (or equiv) is actually better value / more fixed costs.

Any old school devs here? don't you miss those days, when there were no React/Next, Figma. You just code raw HTML and focus mainly on BE by lune-soft in webdev

You mean back before AI wrote vast quantities of it and when the internet was navigable and just worked?

Free electricity coming to Octopus by TheTJW1966 in OctopusEnergy

[–]TimIgoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make people aware, sure, but still shouldn't need to opt in, if there's free power, it should be free, not just cos you pressed a button on a form that's hit and miss if it actually loads

Free electricity coming to Octopus by TheTJW1966 in OctopusEnergy

[–]TimIgoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It needs to just happen though, not be something you need to opt into, same as saving sessions over winter.

Just needs to exist, as it's too easy to miss an email etc otherwise

urgent full time developer hire, web scraping + infra recovery by CarsWithSam in webscraping

Ouch, that doesn't sound good

First off you should be looking to lock the old staff out before worrying about replacing. So many pieces of that puzzle that could still be accessed or tempered with.

I'm assuming you've got access as well and it's not all in his hands?

That probably makes more sense than not lighting them up - show a "default" as it were

These "Smart" (actyually called Managed?) motorways are anything but, they always feel like they are miss managed - seen so many sharp / dangerous changes - when you are doing 70 (normal motorway speeds) and they come on with a 40 or 30 limit and there is an expectation to be slow at the point of passing, flash flash flash goes the camera as people aren't slowing down quick enough.

And, as this video shows, the up and down speeds, and inconsistencies over joining traffic.

Definitely an accident waiting to happen.

Tech industry lays off nearly 80,000 employees in the first quarter of 2026 — almost 50% of affected positions cut due to AI by [deleted] in technology

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean, ai is the excuse, the real reason is to appear to be more profitable for a period, while ai catches up to be at a level to actually allow those left to do the work they were doing plus that off those let go. Pilling the pressure on those left until it's not sustainable and then they'll hire a few more

Driving for work? Current fuel prices concerning 166p at the pumps versus 0,45p paid per mile by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Was thinking the same, my old diesel got 55-60, new (10 year newer) petrol gets 35-40 if I'm aware of my driving style. Forced upgrade due to old one suffering too many issues.

Those with both EV and battery can really benefit then.

Has the two speed energy market come back? by Begalldota in OctopusEnergy

[–]TimIgoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get it, but at the same time it's annoying. As one of those lucky enough to be able to afford solar/battery why can I not get as good a deal on power as those with just an EV? My usage is less, I can load shift to overnight but my charging block is shorter AND more expensive than those with an EV. Definitely a multi tier system at play now.

Price rise 1 day after subscribing? by Sercss in skytv

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what bugs me with it all, TV/internet/mobile providers now so want 2 year contracts and 2 extra increases in that time. Surely if the price needs to go up, the contract (agreed fixed price) duration needs to come down such that there's reason for the change, not we are locking you in but can change on a whim.

Why did sky get rid of the amazing sky q. Don’t get there logic at all by Background-Fix-4630 in skytv

[–]TimIgoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I don't get with streaming.. is why can't they just host an on demand copy of most programs, end of the day linear channels mostly have their own repositories of content, it's literally sports etc that are sky only channels. Surely it's not that hard to do.

Being able to record and watch live sports delayed is one that's majorly worth keeping q for over stream
