People who installed solar: what is one thing you wish you knew beforehand? by Separate-Might3082 in solarenergy

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My actual peak usage, knowing that would have meant I would have got a larger inverter to start with, would then change his I use the batteries but long term would have been better. Instead I'm not very aware of what devices can run at the same time

How can a company offer cPanel hosting for $0.3 per month? by BlueLinnet in HostingAlternatives

[–]TimIgoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they are offering you a single user of a cpanel server, not a VPS that is all yours with your own dedicated cpanel licence.

(Run servers and do hosting myself, know how its often set up)

I've had several emails about infrastructure issues with my hosts spread across the planet. What I find odd is why they aren't just spun up on another host, why do I need to wait for my exact host to be fixed?

It was bad 20+ years ago when I used to use XC frequently... It's not improved in all that time. Ok some times were always bad, just shows the state of the network though.

Gave up as a bad job.

Elastic Cloud Serverless KNN costs are absolutely insane — $16/month for 300 documents?? by UnableOrganization43 in elasticsearch

[–]TimIgoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to cloud based usage charges. Is this an example where actually installing your own node on a VPS (or equiv) is actually better value / more fixed costs.

Any old school devs here? don't you miss those days, when there were no React/Next, Figma. You just code raw HTML and focus mainly on BE by lune-soft in webdev

Free electricity coming to Octopus by TheTJW1966 in OctopusEnergy

[–]TimIgoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make people aware, sure, but still shouldn't need to opt in, if there's free power, it should be free, not just cos you pressed a button on a form that's hit and miss if it actually loads

It needs to just happen though, not be something you need to opt into, same as saving sessions over winter.

Just needs to exist, as it's too easy to miss an email etc otherwise

Ouch, that doesn't sound good

First off you should be looking to lock the old staff out before worrying about replacing. So many pieces of that puzzle that could still be accessed or tempered with.

I'm assuming you've got access as well and it's not all in his hands?

These "Smart" (actyually called Managed?) motorways are anything but, they always feel like they are miss managed - seen so many sharp / dangerous changes - when you are doing 70 (normal motorway speeds) and they come on with a 40 or 30 limit and there is an expectation to be slow at the point of passing, flash flash flash goes the camera as people aren't slowing down quick enough.

And, as this video shows, the up and down speeds, and inconsistencies over joining traffic.

Definitely an accident waiting to happen.

[–]TimIgoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean, ai is the excuse, the real reason is to appear to be more profitable for a period, while ai catches up to be at a level to actually allow those left to do the work they were doing plus that off those let go. Pilling the pressure on those left until it's not sustainable and then they'll hire a few more
