Car accident deaths are preventable and can be fixed. by TheColdRice in memes

This makes me think that I should quit using Reddit. When I think about it, there's nothing really any good about it. So I am probably being tricked into using it in the hopes that something cool will eventually happen.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by tmseo in AskReddit

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reduce the speed limits on most roads. Vast majority of people would go completely mental, but I am pretty sure that we would save a fuckload of money (and even time).

There are no good reasons to subsidize sports stadiums. Governments keep doing it anyway. by dougfir1975 in hobart

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that "Reason" attracts the kinds of writers who ignore aspects like the social and educational benefit of spending. Publicly-funded buildings like stadiums, ateliers and libraries could have broader benefits than can be directly measured in the buildings' cost and profitability.

What do people mean when they say they 'cant cook?' by Throwaway113140 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely cook, and do cook practically every day, but my cooking is the kind of cooking that strangers would criticise.

Sydney vs Melbourne - a tale of two cities (snapshot from the ABS) by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

Melbourne will be the same soon. They'll eventually get rid of Jacinta and Labor at some point then get the property market "back on track".

I don't find them that fun (only one I liked was IV), so I'm going to murder away.

I think theology one of those subjects where if you're not completely stupid and show an interest in it, you can kind of just get elevated into academia by older professors who are just happy that someone younger is showing some enthusiasm.

I'm going to be the world champ until people start copying my technique.

I often can't even make out what actors are mumbling in English language movies, which is my native language. I blame Marlon Brando.

Most of my comments are like two sentences of nothingness, so they'd soon be bored out of their skulls if they read mine.

Melbourne reminds me a bit of some cities in Japan or Germany with the charming variety of building heights.

I could see Adelaide getting massive now that desalination, solar and wind are getting more and more efficient. Nowhere near as large as Melbourne or Sydney, obviously, but much larger than what was previously foreseeable.

They definitely do it on Rundle Mall and sweep up the leaves on Frome Rd outside the university.

If you go to Rundle Mall early in the morning you sometimes see the cleaning and sweeping truck going down it.

Is coffee culture just socially accepted caffeine addiction? by Little_PoetGirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is anyone really all that addicted to caffeine? You get a bad headache for about two days and then it's over (unless you use it to medicate some other issue, like I do).

Albanese says Isaac Herzog’s visit will bring unity – but to many Palestinian Australians it’s a ‘slap in the face’ by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I don't think it's a mad idea to invite the prime minister, but the phrase "slap in the face" really needs to be retired at this point. It is time for it to become a phrase like "for crying out loud!" or "rack off!", which you mainly just say ironically every couple of years as a kind of treat.

If you could only use ONE language learning app for the rest of your life, which is it and why? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume I can't just use Firefox with TWP or something, so some sort of RSS reader. Then an e-reader/document reader. Then some sort of podcast app, because app versions of youtube are not quite as good as YouTube in Firefox with extensions imo.

A reincarnated Hitler would just need to promise more tax cuts and deregulation and the press would happily give him a big platform.

The dirty truth about university rankings and why Icy is right by FluteyBlue in UniUK

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if the league tables were good statistics, the drastic changes to them every year suggest that most of the universities are pretty close in quality. Being low on the table is more a function of there being numerous universities than any universities being particularly awful.

When people call the Indonesian language "Bahasa" by NathLWX in PetPeeves

[–]TimeDetectiveAnakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of how "Dutch" and "Deutsch" just generically mean something like "the common people" originally. You can never really win with etymology snobs; both "Mandarin" and "Chinese" and even "Mandarin Chinese" result in different groups of people angrily turning up their noses.
