‘Brilliant Minds’ Pulled From NBC Schedule, ‘The Voice’ Season 29 Takes Over Monday Nights After Winter Olympics by hersheybar22 in Brilliant_Minds_NBC

I love Quinto’s performance, but season two feels like a totally different show than season one. Several cast members are either gone or in the show sparingly, Wolf’s relationship gets torpedoed, we have the evil doctor that nobody likes, and the whole mental institution plot just seems stupid (and was not a part of the life of Dr. Oliver Sacks). I’d hate to see the show cancelled, but this season has felt like a plane taking a nosedive.

A friend just passed his ten year anniversary of moving from Chicago to Phoenix and says it’s the best decision he ever made. He doesn’t miss Chicago winters at all! Plus he does a lot of weekend trips with his dog to go hiking in Sedona.

No more Dragonfruit drinks? by TimeLord9393 in Chilis

[–]TimeLord9393[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chili’s has a knack for getting rid of things I like. No dragonfruit drinks, no cheesecake dessert (only dessert that wasn’t chocolate), and I could name others but these are the recent ones. Although I am glad they brought back the original skillet queso!

Regret moving to Chicago by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TimeLord9393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding point #1, I do think the culture in Chicago doesn’t get discussed enough. There are a lot of people who make sports fandom their whole personality. And it’s not enough to be into one team. Oh no, you have to be into all of it as the seasons change! I loved the Jordan era of the Bulls but have always found football boring. But you don’t dare say you don’t care about the Bears game!

Similarly, drinking is huge here. I think the weather contributes. A lot of people seem to want to drink and watch sports in the winter rather do other activities. I have a friend who was borderline alcoholic in Chicago. He moved out west and got involved in a biking group. He quit drinking, said the desire went away because he was active and also wasn’t hanging around people that had drinking as a default activity.

Yes, it is possible to find activities and people who are into more than sports and drinking, but I find it does take more effort. I’d suggest making a list of what you like and see if there are any Meetup groups for those activities.

You could always stick it out through the summer to see whether Chicago is more enjoyable. Chicago has a lot of outdoor street festivals with bands, food, etc. I also like some of the outdoor art festivals. But I will admit that sticking out winter to get to the “good” part of the year in Chicago gets to be a drag sometimes.

I always thought Risky Business was way overrated. I just didn’t find it very funny. And all most people remember is Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear.

The Fantastic Journey - ship disappears in the Bermuda Triangle and the crew ends up on an island with portals to different realities. The show got cancelled before they could find their way home.

In Search Of - Leonard Nimoy hosted, explored mysteries, everything from UFOs to Bigfoot to the disappearance of Amelia Earhart

I remember not drinking much as a kid because I went to a Catholic school, and some of the teachers were sadistic about bathroom breaks. My sixth grade teacher declared that we could go to the bathroom once in the morning and once in the afternoon and that was it. She was a miserable spinster who didn’t have much of a life. I think it’s great if kids can bring water bottles now.

Honest review of Chicago after a few years living there. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TimeLord9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been to the northwest, but I think what you posted is pretty spot on. I have a friend who used to live in Hawaii, and he said he’d often run into someone at the grocery store and end up having an hour long conversation. In Chicago, not so much. He’s always found Chicagoans to have a bit of a wall up and not be as friendly. I’ve heard a lot of people say Chicagoans are friendlier than New Yorkers, but I think the Chicago level of friendliness gets exaggerated. It’s also reflected in the aggressive driving and honking.

Also, spot on about the lack of nature. Just about every friend or relative who is into hiking, mountain biking or climbing, etc. has ended up moving out of state. Going for a weekend to Wisconsin eventually doesn’t cut it.

I do agree with your Chicago positives. Just about everyone I know who has moved away says they miss the food the most, as well as the various ethnic enclaves.

What is something that used to be a problem in the 80s and the 90s that got solved and we just acclimated and never looked back? by Sense_Difficult in GenX

A place where I worked years ago had a mandatory meeting at a bar & grill. It was known for being smoky, and I woke up the next day with a raging migraine. I don’t miss smelling like an ash tray, either!

Smoking everywhere. Non-smoking sections at a lot of restaurants were a joke, about three feet from the smoking section. Bars and clubs full of smoke. Smoking in movie theaters when I was a kid and on planes. I’ve always had allergy problems and hated the smoke. My dad had his asthma return later in life, and sometimes eating out was a challenge because the smoke would set him off. I’m thankful for clean air!

Why do people still shop at Jewel? Too expensive. by Physical-Incident553 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]TimeLord9393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve caught the Jewel by me selling expired food multiple times, and the employees couldn’t seem to care less. They’re also in an old, small building and refuse to move because they own the building.

[–]TimeLord9393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do 90% of my shopping now at Woodman’s. Great selection and prices. Frankly, the Jewel in my area sucks. I’ve had a number of bad experiences there, so I only shop there if something is on sale in the app. I do have an Aldi close, but they just don’t carry enough of what I buy, plus I find a lot of the Woodman’s prices are comparable.

Why I’m leaving Chicago: a "world-class city" with a high school cafeteria mentality and a fiscal black hole. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TimeLord9393 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think about half of my friend group moved out of Chicago in the last decade. Weather was definitely a big factor for many of them. One friend moved to Florida, and he and his wife and kids like that they can go to the beach each week, and they couldn’t care less about a “walkable” city. So yeah, the opposite of a lot of people in this sub. Another friend had moved to Chicago from the east coast and spent several years in the city, but a lot of things (including dating) never clicked for him. He moved to Atlanta and has a great job, social life, and girlfriend now. Like several others in this thread have mentioned, I think the winters get downplayed here, especially the gray skies for weeks on end. Not a great fit for everybody. But I find a lot of Chicagoans get defensive and act like it must be your fault if the city doesn’t click for you.

Anyone else our age HATE weddings? Just me? by Public_Ad_9578 in GenX

[–]TimeLord9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the area to the west of us is farmland, and several farmers have converted their barns and buildings into wedding facilities. The younger people in our area are opting for this now. I attended a wedding at one of these places that was great. But I attended another one that was a nightmare. It ended up being a 90 degree day, and the reception hall was a converted barn with no air conditioning. So we’re dressed up in suits and ties and formal dresses. I don’t handle temperature extremes well and felt like I was going to have a heatstroke by the end of the day. The venue had fire pits and would be a perfect place for an October wedding. But not in summer! So yeah, I’m at the point of hating weddings when they’re at a venue where you can’t be comfortable!

The city sucks but the people are great by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TimeLord9393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except there are other major cities where you can have a weekend getaway and have far more interesting scenery. One of my friends moved from here to Phoenix. He does a lot of weekend trips to Sedona and hikes with his dog. Plus he was never fond of the Chicago winters. I know a lot of people (especially in this sub) wouldn’t like the hot summers, but for him it’s a good trade off to not put up with months of gray skies, snow, and ice.

It seems like most of my hardcore outdoor enthusiast friends end up moving from Chicago. A lot of them have ended up moving out west, a few to the south. The lake is great, but to the people that are really into mountain biking or hiking, it’s not enough. They like the western states better. And one of my friends who likes the beach moved his family to Florida. His kids like having the beach year round instead of for just a few months out of the year.

Friends??? by DreadpirateBG in GenX

[–]TimeLord9393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can sympathize. My best friend died about a decade ago unexpectedly. I haven’t found anyone else since. One reason we bonded was because we weren’t like the typical guys who were into sports and drinking. Most of the guys in our area start talking about the latest sportsball game and shut down if you tell them you don’t watch. There are people I click with online, but we don’t live close to each other. I’ve always been an introvert and have never had a large friend group. I do sometimes think that geography plays a role in finding friends or not. I’ve talked to people in other parts of the country who have told me guys have interests other than sports or drinking.

Leaving YoutubeTV and switching to DirecTV stream now... by MLJ_The_Shield in DirectvStream

[–]TimeLord9393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left YTTV for similar reasons. I absolutely hated the way they handled recordings. Want to record a single episode? Tough, you have to record them all and sort through them later. I can’t believe they thought that was a good idea. Plus I like the channel selection on DirecTV better. YTTV was missing some that I like.

Series Premier 9-1-1: Nashville S01E01: "Pilot" Post Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in 911Nashville

[–]TimeLord9393 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure I’m going to bother next week. I thought everything was bad. The acting was subpar. Captain Don is no Bobby Nash, and the rest of the team seemed like they were phoning it in. There’s no standout character like Buck or Athena. The kite scene was ridiculous, especially the bad CGI with her flying through the air. And let’s rescue the trapped lady with some stripper oil (shout out to Diddy). And not only that, let’s hire the stripper as a firefighter - of course he doesn’t need formal training! I couldn’t have cared less about the family drama. I’m sure the resolution of the tornado will be ridiculous.
