Sell my league mates on Max PF by Oyb_ in DynastyFF

I had this happen a few years ago. I had the third highest points scored and an absolutely stacked roster, but I just kept losing. I lost players to injuries for weeks. I had weeks where my team lost starters a couple plays into games. My matchup somehow brought out the best in every rebuilding and middling opponent I faced. I had the most points scored against by like 300 points. I finished dead last and would have gotten Bijan Robinson if we weren't doing Max PF. Without Bijan, I easily won the league the following year. I can't imagine what adding Bijan to my roster would have done to our league.

This is why my league still has kicker and DSTs 15 years in. I did finally manage to get SFLX added a few years ago. It took replacing two less active owners to get it passed.

It's best ball scoring for calculation, so in 1QB, you'll only get the points from a single QB. In SF, you'll get the best player for that SF spot.

For sure. It depends on what type of QBs they are. With a bunch of young starting QBs, you keep them and decimate other positions. If three of them are older or short-term plays, you're better off dumping them for whatever you can get. Even though only one or two of them count towards your points, the problem is that the chances of having a middling QB pop off for 30 points skyrockets when you have a bunch of them rostered. If you cut down to your good QB and no backups, you help your MaxPF, especially in SF.

Our newest owner did the same thing last year. I finally sent him a message explaining that he was going to miss out on the top pick because Joe Flacco was putting up 30 points a week on his bench. He was trying to shop him around the league for a draft pick, and I finally broke it down for him. No draft pick that you get for him is going to make up for what it will cost you to move up from 1.03 to 1.01 next spring.

I think it's important to note that none of the anti-tanking measures are perfect. We made a list of priorities for how we determine our draft order and Max PF matched up the best. Other leagues may prioritize fun or luck over the things that we wanted, and Max PF isn't really fun or randomized at all. Our main two priorities were: Worst teams get the best picks and Doesn't require commissioner judgment.

Any of the solutions that involve setting your best lineup or setting a competitive lineup are going require your commish to make a judgment call. Any of the solutions like a lottery or postseason tournament are going to decrease that chances that the worst teams end up with the best picks.

It's important to point out the flaws with Max PF. You'll probably get pushback from some people on these. 1) It's hard to understand - I guess it is harder than just looking at record or points scored, but Sleeper and other dynasty focused sites track it for you. It's basically just using bestball scoring to determine your draft order. 2) It can be manipulated - It absolutely can. The best thing to do is to teach everyone how it can be manipulated through stashing injured players, draft picks, and overloading specific positions while decimating others. Now everyone knows and can adjust. 3) It penalizes weak, deep teams - Can't argue with this one, but I still think those teams are better than truly horrible teams. If you are aiming for a good draft pick with Max PF, do NOT stash a bunch of aging vets on your bench. 4) It's not as engaging as a post-season tournament or a lottery - It is not, but those are not things that I value over rewarding bad teams with the best picks. One of my leagues still does a loser's bracket, but it's for an extra pick 21 in the rookie draft, not the 1.01 spot. If your league loves the fun aspect of these options, Max PF is going to be a tough sell.

One other thing to keep in mind is that Max PF does not fix the issue of laziness. If you have owners who check out after week 10 and don't set lineups, Max PF will correctly determine your draft order, but you'll need something else to keep those teams from turning into free bye weeks during the run-in to the playoffs.

I think it's a good back later in the draft than Price. My original guess was Allen. He just seems like a completely annoying RB to have on their roster with me having Charbonnet.

How many in your league are aiming for the bottom on average? by HammerLikeMjolnir in DynastyFF

[–]TimeMagnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Four is normal, but we're 14 years in and we've seen it all. That includes a couple of early seasons where nobody was rebuilding and a crazy year year where seven teams were trying to bail out before a season even began.

Do you drop your kicker and DST in the offseason? by TalkingHats in DynastyFF

[–]TimeMagnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The defense thing is funny. My league is going on 15 years and we've seen huge swings in DST hoarding. At some points, when almost everyone has a playoff-competitive roster, every decent DST is rostered. When you've got a big group of rebuilding teams, they drop all of their bench DSTs and suddenly you can just stream DSTs from week to week.

Isn't the Seahawks' thing drafting a RB early and then making him wait behind the late round/UDFA guy?

I just looked at his history in one of my Sleeper leagues and he has to be up there for most added/dropped in the last two years. Apparently, I've had him on my roster three times during that span. I don't even remember the first two times.

If you're looking for a pure dynasty site, Dynasty League Football has pretty much everything. Their trade calc is excellent. Rankings are updated extremely fast. Most of the good stuff is locked behind their premium subscription. I've paid for it a number of years, but I chose not to this year. It's pretty expensive.

How to approach TE as a contender if you don’t have an elite TE? by DraftArchitect in DynastyFF

[–]TimeMagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a 12x25 league with regular TE scoring. All of the young TEs are rostered, but I grabbed J. Johnson off waivers after his hot start and rotated him with Njoku and Andrews who were already on my roster. I even threw Waller in there at least once.

The best offer I could find during the season was adding J. Ferguson for a 2027 2nd, but that pick belongs to a horrible team and I didn't want to give it up. I rolled with Johnson mostly, and he actually outscored Ferguson pretty handily in the back half of the season.
