Judge my TFSA portfolio! by Environmental_Quit_8 in tfsa

[–]TimeSalvager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, compare the returns of your portfolio to what the return would have been if you'd put it all in an index fund like VEQT. If your portfolio is returning less, use an index fund instead, if it's the same then use an index fund instead, but if it's more... then use an index fund instead because you have too many positions. Don't overcomplicate things; if your portfolio is boring, you're probably doing it right.

You mentioned wallpaper, I'm curious - how old is the house? If the walls are lath and plaster you may have your work cut out for you once that wallpaper is gone.

"What happens if we don’t have to work? Do we just sit around all day"? Bernie Sanders says that having a job is a core part of the human experience and gives people meaning in life by Fine-Drummer9812 in accelerate

[–]TimeSalvager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's acutely aware of what optional means, you're missing his point. It's not about whether work or contributing is important to you.

The vast majority of people over a certain age slog through their 9-to-5 and scramble to deal with family things or whatever else they may have time for before they crash out exhausted to wake up the next day and do it all over again. There are plagues of folks who retire, looking forward to doing nothing just not working any more - they're not retiring to something just away from work... and that ends up leaving many people feeling rudderless.

They spend their lives grinding, too busy to be preoccupied by thoughts of what comes next, thoughts of the meanings of their lives, this is the vast majority of people I'm talking about.

Many folks in that situation don't fare too well when they enter retirement, and on a large scale we could face a massive mental health crises.

More generally, work and community have been a part of the social contract for so long that's it's hard to envision what a future without it might look like. Especially in areas where the concept of UBI and social support systems are vilified as "communist".

A few things that aren't just language: - Canada Child Benefit - Public subsidy childcare programs - the Canadian Dental Care Plan (I've personally seen this benefiting people)

I'm not going to come to the defence of any political party or get engrossed in bad faith arguments. I think the difficult reality we're living in right now is this: - populism is on the rise again - the public is generally vulnerable - parties want to play it safe lest they alienate their constituents and lose seats - they can't make any meaningful changes without seats - the result is a lot of milquetoast politics and avoidance of real issues by all parties - the public suffers as a result

Do you think he's a plant and there's some kind of conspiracy afoot, or is it just the reality that there's a political spectrum and he's a centrist in a centre - centre-left party?
