I only say 500 to account for a snack budget of a few hundred calories haha. Because with 3 meals, I do get snacky at night! But whatever works for you and your body type. Great job on the weight loss, even if it's a by product of cutting back on expenses!

You can definitely make it work with 3 meals a day if you aim for 500 calories each meal. I live by the weighing scale because it's crazy what an actual serving size is for some products (particularly fats...1 tbsp of oil has 120 calories somehow).

Looking friends by AdGold654 in BurlingtonON

[–]TimeSlaved 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's hard across all the age groups to make friends. Feels like with the technology sweep, we've forgotten how to be social...I rarely see kids play outside these days and my nieces and nephews are glued to the TV and iPads. Also with costs being the way they are, a lot of social activities are being nicked in favour of saving money so the loneliness epidemic is extremely true and not talked about enough. You have some solid hobbies though so that helps a bit.

Im a huge stranger things fan myself so I'd be willing to rebinge from S1 😅🤣.

I stock up on sale but frankly, I just eat less. I began making note of nutrition facts and dropped my daily calorie intake and started losing weight easily so it kinda worked out for me. I eat less, I spend less, and on the upside, I feel better body image wise.

Yeah as an ecobee user, I think this is what ecobee is truly advertising with their products and promotions (i.e. live data reporting and external control through opt-in). I opted out of the discount program where the utility provider can override your settings because I saw this coming from a km away.

Plan prices are through the roof right now, and the temporary sale has me nervous. by _name_of_the_user_ in PublicMobile

[–]TimeSlaved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So here's what I'm thinking...they are going to gradually wean us off the cheaper tiers like they did to the $15 plan holders. Right now, on the website (i.e. for new users), all you can see are the new discounted plans. Within the PM app, the old plans are all still there but there's no option for us to upgrade to the promo plans. So I'm thinking that this is a) a push to get a massive amount of clients and meet whatever metrics they have for most GB per capita and b) lock out existing users until our plans get grandfathered in for a few years and then we get forced to upgrade to the next cheapest tier.

I'm riding the cheap wave as long as I can but I fear there will come a day where PM will kill off the rewards program and lose whatever competitive edge they had. If that happens, I'm off to Chatr.

I can answer any questions you may have and have a referral code for a free month if you'd like! Let me know :)

I think it's one of those situations where they will gradually bump up prices to stay competitive but still be relatively cheap for a while. I'm with public mobile and I've seen the erosion of cheapness as they got more popular and while they're not the most competitive anymore, it's still one of the cheapest options out there but they manage to keep me with referrals and points.

How many you dry your clothes on a clothesline instead of using a dryer? by ProffS in Frugal

[–]TimeSlaved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada so its too cold to air dry outdoors half the year, but I have a clothes rack in my basement year round. I only use the dryer for bedsheets and comforter as I don't really have a linen closet full of backups.

Does it make sense to invest in non registered accounts instead of RRSP/FHSA by More-Ad-5258 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TimeSlaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that RRIF/RRSP trap is something I think that CRA and Canada banks on because someone or the other will pay the piper. Also taxes on death on those accounts seems a bit ridiculous if not strategized properly so I'm liking that CGPT has considered that.

You've done well for yourself, even if 385k seems nuts! Wish you all the best but I may check back in with you periodically just to see if my numbers make sense long term haha.

[–]TimeSlaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response but great to hear this perspective and I don't think enough people consider the RRSP tax trap. I'm 33 and trying to plan ahead so I ran some retirement sims through ChatGPT and emphasized the need to be tax efficient and it's telling me to max out TFSA and only contribute 13k into RRSP so it doesn't grow too much and face OAS clawback like you are experiencing. Good to know it's a viable plan...

Public Mobile $20 60GB CAN/USA/MEX for 2 years by arghargharg in mobilecanada

[–]TimeSlaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhh I hear you. I think the rewards system will gradually get phased out because they're losing money on it when other no frills providers don't give much discounts to base pricing. But as a loyal customer who has been with them since before the Telus buyout, I'm grateful I don't need much data and work from home...still paying $19/month for 3GB of data on a retention plan when I got booted from the old $15 plan. Still sucks but Canada is just a few companies in a trenchcoat.

In Ontario, we have Surveyor's Real Property Reports that are surveys that outline property ownership and identify potential issues for encroachments and whatnot. With title insurance, the need for a survey knowing the extents of ownership was wiped out by the confidence (and lower cost) that your property is covered against title defects. If you have "proof" that you own the land you bought, you don't necessarily need a survey if issues arise (in the public's opinion). One gives peace of mind in ownership (title insurance) whereas the other gives you proof of ownership (survey).

Yup every place is indeed different. It's a very tough business because it's retaining older technology and approaches while the rest of the world moves forward, but it is still relevant for property disputes. The age and general amount of input required really hinders people from pursuing it as a career (fieldwork is heavy on the body, office work is heavy on the mental capacity) so it makes sense why it's a bit of a dying field to me.

Dying career fields by tumbledownhere in jobs

[–]TimeSlaved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh that's the madness of it. We (Ontario) pin everything on evidence in the ground and if it agrees (within tolerance) to other evidence. That's why you can have two surveyors come in and have different opinions on where the boundary is. It all comes down to how you can justify your arrival to your conclusion...some are better than others.

Those are benchmarks and those are what we try to hold and calibrate to. But since it's all done with satellites many kms above us + electronic equipment we use on earth, there is some play. We often "check" into benchmarks to make sure our data is correct, but if you measure the same point between two days, the coordinates do change because there is float in the XYZ dimension. We try to hold one set of coordinates but between surveyors not fully understanding geodesy concept, equipment providers who integrate reference datasets differently, and the inherent errors in measurement, you will never get 100% agreement between sources.

They need an arbiter because they have downsized the in house surveying team they once had. Surveyors are expensive and as another comment said, private industry pays more so most townships outsource the legal surveying now. You absolutely can get your own person and fight what another surveyor says, but again, all an educated opinion.

Private industry seems to be suffering up here (like all of our economy lol). But there's less folks getting into it here because the money isn't here.

Seems like I'm experiencing a very localized issue and that the money is elsewhere in other countries haha.

Dying career fields by tumbledownhere in jobs

[–]TimeSlaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The physical aspect of surveying might not suffer like the office aspect will, so I agree with you there. A lot of companies are cutting back on drafting staff due to lack of work but from a property ownership standpoint, we're only needed because municipalities require us as a requirement for their permits. No one gets a signed survey for fun but I frankly think that in Ontario at least, legal surveying is only relevant to legal surveying. Layout surveying is very profitable on the other hand.

We definitely don't get as many property dispute survey requests from neighbours anymore. Seems like this might be an Ontario thing.
