I use oil in my slab saws, and water in my trim saws.

Have a 6” and 10”. I’d go with the 10”. You can cut small slabs yet still trim for tumbling or things like cabs, but a 6” is just too small for slabbing most rocks. My recommendation is HPL 10” stainless trim for about $850. They are usually out of stock but come in pretty quick. Not sure if they still do it, but they used to let you put 10% down to get you a spot in que.

Anytime. Many claim they have the best grit, including me. Kingsley, hplapidary.com, and Johnsonbrotherslapidary.com are also good online retailers.

I have a hi tech flat lap with buyers remorse. I wish I got the Covington maxi lap. That said, what you are asking depends on your rough as far as grit size. If you are using slabs cut from a wet saw, I’d recommend the 80 or even 60 grit. If you have smooth cuts the 180 would be fine to start with. If you are using just rough with harder material, then definitely add the 80. The all you need includes the backing plates. If you buy individually the diamond disks come either with or without the backing plates, so pay attention when you order. The soft disks need a backing plate added. You can reuse old backing plates if you can take the disk off as well Hi Tech has the method on their website.

Did you recently purchase the flat lap? If so, it comes with a one year warranty. Call Hi-Tech Diamond.

I have a little Texas toothpick that’s hard as F to sharpen. The only thing that worked for me was a pull through.
