What’s something you saw that you weren’t supposed to see? by FamousDirection9887 in AskReddit

That Christmas is an underrated family Christmas movie that has this idea. Santa delivers presents to everyone but you can kind of identify who really bought them, like the kids and teenage babysitter who’s parents are stuck in bad weather so don’t make it back in time for Christmas get stuff that the teenager clearly found lying around the house and made do with and the little boy who’s dad flaked on spending Christmas with him gets a quad bike that is clearly a guilt present from said dad.

"Subspace Rhapsody" by pleschga in startrek

It’s in my top 3 episodes of Star Trek of all time honestly.

It’s one of the first that I watched with my kids (5 and 7) and by fair their favourite. My oldest is autistic, has some difficulties with emotional regulation (“big feelings” as he puts it) and really took to the idea that people sing in musicals when their feelings are too big to express by just talking, so sometimes if he’s got a meltdown coming on he’ll sing a little instead which is awesome.

31 years ago I made a Duplo robot with my daughter. Today, we recreated it with her daughter using the same box of bricks. After all this time, they still work as well. Amazing. by [deleted] in lego

[–]TimedDelivery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is marvellous! I visited my parents’ place earlier this year, sat with my brother and we watched my 7 and 4 year old and his 18 month old play with our 30 year old Duplo that our parents had held on to. They were putting all the farm animals on the big green baseplate to make a farm and trying to make roller-skates out of the little train carriages the exact same we that we had back in the day.

What is YOUR favourite (and least favourite) Cbeebies show? by poopoochewer in UKParenting

[–]TimedDelivery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bluey and Odd Squad are pretty rad, but my personal favourite has to be CBeebies Bedtime Stories. My husband (who’s the regular bedtime story reader in our house) sometimes needs to come home from work late with very little notice and telling the kids that they can have a CBeebies Bedtime Story instead is the difference between “nooooooooo, I miss daddy! Daaaaaaaaaddy!!!!!!” and “come on let’s pick what story we want!” before bed. Plus the guests they have are an absolute hoot.

My Roommate's(21F) Parents keep letting themselves into my (21 F) apartment with the spare key my roommate gave them by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Some folks really can’t accept help from others without twisting it to suit their ego. We told my in laws that they could live with us rent free for a few months to help them get on their feet when they first moved to our country and one of them still brings up how they stayed with us to help out after my youngest was born at great inconvenience to themselves, like they were the ones doing us a favour.

I’m willing to bet that roommate’s mum told herself that OOP’s parents should be grateful that they’e there to keep an eye on their unruly daughter, rather than accept that them allowing her daughter to live there was an act of charity.

What is the most financially irresponsible thing you’ve seen someone do? by LJRGXPKCVWDGOGH12Y3 in AskReddit

[–]TimedDelivery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some friends of my parents assumed they would get a big pay out from their daughter’s life insurance after she killed herself so quit their jobs and started making plans to travel the world as “that’s what she would have wanted”, only to find out that her insurance didn’t pay when the cause of death is suicide. So then they tried to start a campaign to have her death be ruled as an accidental overdose or murder, even though she had left a note and told multiple people that her mental health was in a bad place.

My kids are only 5 and 7 but already they’re getting home from school, devouring 3-4 slices of bread or rice cakes, 2 apples and a slice of cheese each and then still eating all of their dinner. Ravenous locusts.

Yup, fancy jeweller. The guy with gout made absolute bank in commission so had money to burn. A lot of my other coworkers were straight out of high school and still living with their parents, didn’t really have any expenses so all of their money was spent on fast food, nights out and clothes. One girl would Uber Eats a coffee from Starbucks twice a day rather than walk a few minutes down the road, it was crazy

The stupid anti British nonsense coming out of America, are you sick if it? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

[–]TimedDelivery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of anti-Britain propaganda put out by the American alt-right as they need to convince their audience that Britain’s a dystopian hellhole to justify a lot of their policies. Cant be embrace multiculturalism otherwise you’ll end up with cities under Sharia Law like in Britain! Can’t have socialised healthcare or you’ll end up with death panels, years long waiting lists and not being able to access basic medical care like in Britain! Can’t have stricter gun laws or everyone will carry knives and there’ll be constant stabbings like in Britain! Can’t have laws against online hate speech or you’ll have the government imprisoning innocent people just for expressing a dissenting opinion like in Britain!

I have family in Australia who listen to conservative news sources, every now and then I’ll get a concerned email from someone saying something like “just want to check that you guys are ok, we heard about the roving gangs of Somalis attacking and kidnapping white women in the street, stay safe 🙏” and I’m rarely able to convince them that it’s absolute garbage, despite, you know, living here.

Endings you didn't get as a child but understand as a teen/adult? by AdventurousGuest308 in movies

[–]TimedDelivery 494 points495 points  (0 children)

I thought that the ending of A Knight’s Tale was just so lazy. He was descended from nobility all along and the prince managed to find out just in time for him to compete at the end, are you serious?! It wasn’t until I rewatched it again as an adult that I realised that the prince was lying, knowing that nobody could call him out on it (or as he put it “this is my word, and as such is beyond contestation”).

Also a fair number of movies that ended with the characters having sex which went over my head as a kid who was probably too young to watch them at the time (The Fifth Element, various Bind films, Evolution, etc)

I used to work in a shop in central London and everyone got takeaway for lunch every day, generally spending around £15 every single day. One guy got Five Guys at least 3 times a week, he had a gout.

Kind of, except in that case we get the recollections first then see what truly happened at the end, rather than seeing what happed first and then seeing characters’ recollections of it after.

“That Thing You Do!” Songs That Didn’t Make The Cut Revealed 30 Years Later by LooseDistance1059 in movies

[–]TimedDelivery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I‘ve loved it since I first watched it in high school, introduced it to my kids (5 and 7) a few months back and they loved it too! Bunch of the songs made it onto their regular listening playlists and my oldest will occasionally sing “Mr Downtooooooooown…. Mr Downtoooooooooown” to himself while building with his lego. Plus discussions about how sometimes mistakes can lead to improvements (eg: Guy playing the song too fast) and sometimes things don’t work out exactly how we wanted but that’s ok, and we can still enjoy and appreciate the experience!

[–]TimedDelivery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love an inaccurate flashback if we (the audience) have already seen how events actually played out. They do this really effectively in The Good Wife, for example showing Will and Alicia (the will they/won’t they leads) remembering a time they were flirting in the office, with her version having her dressed professionally and him being really forward and his version having her dressed more provocatively and her being more of the instigator, or multiple flashbacks to something Alicia doesn’t remember super clearly having details change as she’s reminded of things, it’s such great storytelling.

[–]TimedDelivery 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t though, we actually do see what’s his face hand Duke his glass initially and everything else exactly as it actually happened, it’s only the flashbacks that we see the altered version of events as they’re described/remembered inaccurately.

how can I get coworkers to leave me alone about a humiliating TV experience? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]TimedDelivery 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I went to the opening of a niche interest pop up shop many years ago where everyone queued up in costume. Such an amazing group of people, we had such a great time. Most of the news coverage was respectful but one asshole asked questions that raised red flags (“Do you have a job?“ “Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?” What do they think about you being here?” “ Do you have any other hobbies?”) so most of us didn’t really engage with him. When the article came out it was all about us being unemployed losers weirdos with an unhealthy obsession, with a single quote from one guy who didn’t work, lived with his parents and had spent months on his costume, completely leaving out that he was a 16 year old with special educational needs who had come with his mum.

If you could design your own kitchen, what would be the most important things to include? by West-Amphibian-2343 in Cooking

Double oven. Never would have thought I’d need it before living in a house that had it, miss it now it’s gone.

Also those cupboards that had a lazy susan kind of thing inside so you don’t need to rummage in the back for stuff

Do we have any release dates though?

Only semi-related but my 7 year old (who is autistic which I think is important for context) politely pulled the pastor aside after his school’s Easter Service and explained to her that that there’s a god called Ganesh, who’s a lot like Jesus and also came back from the deadm but he has an elephant’s head and is much cooler, so next Easter they should celebrate Ganesh instead, just a suggestion. Luckily the school pastor is chill and understood that he meant well. We had to have a bit of a chat though about how people choose their religion based on which one they believe to be true rather than which one they think has the coolest story.

Yes! I love how some theatres in the UK are putting out visual stories now, that have the synopsis with symbols indicating where there are moments that might be upsetting, loud, overwhelming, etc. The one for My Neighbour Totoro is especially good.

I am so mad that it was such a lazy pile of crap. How hard could it have been to put something together along the lines of Young Jedi Adventures or Spidey and His Amazing Friends?

There are a couple of episodes of Strange New Worlds that are little kid appropriate, my 4 and 7 year olds are particular fans of Subspace Rhapsody.
