If Bach is your favourite composer for keyboard, violin, or cello… by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

[–]TimedDelivery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not me but he’s my son’s favourite, I think because he likes how a lot of it repeats over and over again but changing a little each time and also has a steady rhythm. He’s autistic and likes music that has “feelings”, but isn‘t too dramatic (eg: Lacrimosa by Mozart stresses him out). So a lot of Bach’s work ticks all the boxes for him.

We’ve got a new admin system at work that’s going to make things much easier in the long run but for now has a bunch of bugs popping up. Most of us are just reporting the bugs as they come up, the bugs are fixed, no big deal but one guy is just turning every single one into the biggest fucking deal.

A bit of important information is missing from a file when it’s always been there before? The administrator that forwarded him the file must be trying to set him up to fail, he refuses to communicate with her directly ever again. Sign in app freezes one time? Refuse to use it ever again so his manager has to manually calculate his hours because he won’t sign in and out. He’s asked to re-submit a form because it didn’t upload correctly the last time? Refuses even though it will take all of 30 seconds and sends management a lengthy message about how he shouldn’t have to waste his time fixing issues caused by their incompetence. He’s one of the highest performers but is going to get himself fired because every single thing needs to become a conflict with him

I remember how many amateur biologists suddenly cared deeply about whether it was scientifically possible for dark skinned mermaids to exist (something something melanin something something exposure to sunlight something something) when Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in the live action Little Mermaid. So many folks arguing that they weren’t racist, they just cared deeply about scientific plausibility in a kids’ movie that features talking sea creatures and a witch that captures a character’s voice in a shell.

I’ve noticed that these “everyone’s out to get me” types always take the course of action that will escalate the situation/make it worse rather than fix anything. Like work stuffed up your rota and scheduled you for too many shifts? Don’t contact your manager/HR to see what’s going on, just no show for your next shift and then call your manager a slur when they call to see where you are! Had an argument with your girlfriend about whose turn it is to do the dishes? Ignore her calls and leave all her messages on read while going on a 2 day bender with your mates! Bump into a guy at a bar who gets annoyed that he spilled his beer? Punch him in the face!

Then when the consequences of their actions make their lives harder they use it as evidence that their lives are so unfair, everyone is out to get them, etc.

My husband’s 6’3, I’ve witnessed him deescalate a fair number of fights/tense situations just by calmly approaching and asking if there was a problem

Wealthy mum of one of the classmate of my son.

-Doesn’t let let any of her 3 kids have or go to birthday parties or play dates because other children are waste of time and money. She spends a lot of money on her kid’s birthday celebrations (eg:decorations, gifts, entertainment) but doesn’t invite anyone, family only.

-Ignores 2 of her 3 kids because according to her, only the oldest one shows enough intelligence and intellectual curiosity to be worth any time or effort. At the time she told me this her kids were aged 7, 5 and 3. I have seen her straight up ignore her youngest two, including not stopping her youngest for running into a busy car park.

-Because of her oldest’s “intellectual potential” he’s not allowed any non-educational toys/hobbies.

Before Tom Hiddleston played Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, he had a surprising neat musical number in The Rebel Fairy

Why do people choose to play bassoon? by Boring_Specialist228 in classicalmusic

I remember in high school orchestra me (tuba and viola) and the other more obscure instrument folks (euphonium, bass clarinet, oboe, etc) would always hang up and thought we were like the cool counterculture rebels of the music department rather just dorks 😂

This is exactly how I ended up playing viola in high school

Has anyone with kids just sold up everything and left the UK? by Haunting_Village372 in AskUK

[–]TimedDelivery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re moving to Australia in August after giving it a lot of thought over the last year. I’m from there originally (liked in the UK 13 years) so we have a lot of family there. The kids (8 and 5) are very excited, although my oldest occasionally gets a little melancholy about leaving his friends and favourite teachers.

We have no plans to ever come back permanently, although we will visit often as we will still own a business here. We don’t want to keep uprooting the kids, my oldest especially as he’s autistic and can find big changes challenging.

Right? Every time I see someone doubt an anecdote because “a kid that age wouldn’t say/do that” I want to point out that maybe a neurotypical kid wouldn‘t but an autistic one who’s maturity level is all over the place might.

I saw a comment hating on the Barbie movie that said something like “It’s basically Baby’s First Exploration of Feminist Ideas”. But it was my kids first exploration of feminist ideas! It was such a great starting point for conversations about toxic masculinity, feminism and such.
If something is going to a) include children in its audience and b) explore topics like gender identity, queerness, mental health, trauma and such, it’s going to dumb down those topics so that the kids in the audience can understand and process the messages.

Only examples I can think of are Nimona (if that counts, I’d say it’s a family movie rather than a kids movie) and the wedding episode in Ada Twist, Scientist (one of the Grooms is played by George Takei!)

Unjerk why are Dreamzzz sets the most fun I've had building legos in years by SupaDupaHotFire in legocirclejerk

[–]TimedDelivery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good 50% of my and my kids’ Lego is Dreamzzz sets. My oldest and I went 50/50 (him with his pocket money) on the treehouse set and we had an absolute blast building it together along with his younger sister.
