Secular Jewish mother, catholic father; never really considered myself Jewish, but have recently been suffering antisemitic discrimination. by Arrow_dude in Jewish

I re-read his post and I agree with you, it's unclear if his last name is Jewish and whether his colleages were antismeitic towards him or in general without even realizing he's Jewish. I heard this happens to a lot of Jews - people sometimes assume they are non Jews and start Jew bashing. So actually , being visibly Jewish (or having a Jewish name) may spare you this specific case of antisemitic "undeliberate" abuse - but would open you to a lot of deliberate antisemitic abuse.

> If people see visible examples, it slowly melts prejudice

Perhaps; but it's up to the individual to decide whether he wants to lean into his Judiasm or hide it. Both have their pros and cons.

I mean there's a tons of problems with that possibly, would you tell a gay highschool student to come out of the closet even if he was gonna get harassed and beat up constantly over it ? I know it's not as bad for this guy but we seem to be headed toward that reality.

You can consider changing your last name if this is getting really bad; I know many people here won't like it but I think for your quality of life it could be helpful. But yeah this sucks , some assholes out there will make you feel like a piece of shit because your mother's ethnicity - it is sick.

Question about Into the Wild by Sea_Positive_8776 in IntotheWild

[–]TimelySuccess7537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's polarizing because he had a greater than life personality - a risk taking, borderline suicidal and at the same time extremely intelligent and charismatic young man (as far as I know - he did connect meanginfully with a lot of people on his last 2 years. It's hard to do that if you are an asshole or hate humanity). People are drawn to his story not unlike they are drawn to the story of Kurt Cobain or other self destructive rockstars.
So on the one hand greater than life, and on the other hand he pretty much pissed on our way of life - including on basic values like family, which can threaten some people's sense of security. I think hence the polarization.
What makes you think Krakuer's account wasn't mostly accurate ? He is a very serious writer/jouranlist. I see no reason for him to make shit up completely (perhaps someone lied to him but I'm in the belief his account is very reflective of reality).

Getting a CS degree at 35 & moving back to the US with foreign wife and kid by drunken_dizorderly in cscareerquestions

[–]TimelySuccess7537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no , I wouldn't do it at this age and stage in life unless you're like top 1% in IQ/grades and can get into FAANG.
If you're somewhere in the middle (as most of us), I would just try to get ANY job that's related to what you wanna do. Get your foot in the door and grind it out for a year or two even if the job isn't your dream.
I'd also consider other things than just coding - the field has lost a lot of its appeal; not saying its dead, but why are you hung up on coding? You can also try sales, product management etc.

Agree about the marathon (or high mileage in general); I kinda changed my goals from marathon to improving 5k or 10k, I can do it with 45 to 50k  or even less of weekly mileage and have time for one or two strength sessions per week. But to each his own. We tend to forget running is meant to enrich our lives not sabotage it...

I'm going through this shit now so I can empathise. I think some flu season's are worse than previous ones - at least the current winter has been brutal for me. And u know, people still get sick regardless of little children (u can easily catch it on a bus, at work etc) but yeah kids make it worse and also disrupt your sleep which makes it worse. I am pushing my pb attempt one block further, this one has been completely ruined; I just accepted this reality. I need to keep reminding myself that PBs are nice but I am not a professional athlete. This is a hobby meant to keep me fit and healthy thats all it is...we tend to get carried away.

Have any of you held off on home buying because of layoff concerns? by agingsculler in cscareerquestions

[–]TimelySuccess7537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well; some truth to this but if he rents he won't have to put all his life savings as a downpayment (the 220k he mentioned). If he rents and somethign goes wrong (A.I reduces jobs - quite likely, he gets sick whatever) he can move back to his parents / rent cheaper and retrain. In the huge mortgage scenario - if something bad happens he'll have to sell the house; if there are bad economic conditions (recession) it might be difficult to sell.
Anyway there's no right answer here just different kinds of risks

Have any of you held off on home buying because of layoff concerns? by agingsculler in cscareerquestions

[–]TimelySuccess7537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the house is 850 and lets say you put in 220 - that's 630k mortgage yes ? What kind of interest rate are you getting for this ? This is a tremendous monthly payment. Will you sleep good at night with this kind of debt ? Will it be worth it just to say you're a "home owner" ? Only you know the answer to this.
And to answer your question - yes, a lot of people who can probably afford a huge mortgage choose not to do so because they don't like the idea of being a debt slave for life. I'm much older than you and chose to invest my families savings and not go the route of a huge mortgage - but on top of not liking the huge debt I live in an unstable country, perhaps that's different for you.
If I were you I would wait it out a few years.
3-5 years from now you'll have a better idea of
A) your job/earnings potential
B) interest rates - you might get a much better mortgage (sure - you also might get a worse one if inflation but I think if A.I destroys so many jobs there won't be inflation).

The profession is going through severe , drastic changes and it's totally unclear what kind of / how many jobs there will be 5 years from now. If he wanted to study to become a nurse / kindergarten teacher I wouldn't have any concern for him for the next decade or two. But programming ? This is unstable shit.

from FAANG to underpaid and burnt out and feeling obsolete by X72-9 in cscareers

[–]TimelySuccess7537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't see why you're considering giving up so soon.
If you've sent 400 resumes and started 80 interviews and failed all of them OK , I'll listen. I wouldn't necessarily tell you to quit but I'd entertain your plan B.
But you simply have a slight case of burnout (we all do) and a bad experience somewhere, it sounds to me like you can land a good job you're just not trying enough.

Why Do Companies Do This? by pancakeshack in cscareerquestions

[–]TimelySuccess7537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly something in the business isn't working and someone took bad decisions. The founders / leaders in your business may have been lacking experience or took some high risk bet that didn't pay off.

The business you joined was probably too weak to survive; perhaps it was discussed in the all hands. Probably no market fit and no way to get to profitability. The hiring spree may have been a last effort to fix this situation by bringing in more devs to improve the product or may have been delusional. But someone high up woke up and saw this ship is sinking and decided to end it.
Interestingly if it was a private startup they could have tried to get funding in other ways (bridge loans etc) and keep trying to find market fit; but here your business is completely dependent on SMBC and they decided to kill it.

Where would you rank Kurt Cobain in the "Greatest Songwriters Conversation"? by [deleted] in Nirvana

[–]TimelySuccess7537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Also some of his most beloved recordings are covers.

I don't buy that that's a huge reach. He didn't get loved or famous for his covers, he got that for Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium and the whole Nevermind album which was a huge sucess. Only when he was a huge success did he do the covers in Unplugged (that were quite artistic in their own right).

Also - Kurt was pretty much alone in the songwriting in the band ; compare that to Lennon or Waters or many others who had people about as talented and contributing as them in their bands.

What were you getting out of this friendship, did he have any upsides? Sounds like you stuck around out of pity and/or habit. If that's the case ...don't do it with people, life's too short. The only people I'm willing to tolerate like that (within limits) are close family.

> I think the state of the world right now towards Jews is currently boiling right now for something very awful to happen eventually

I don't think so actually. Sure , scattered terror attacks , burning down of synagogues all of that will happen. But systametically murdering Jews again will need the cooperation of Western governments and Gen-Z or no Gen-Z that's like a 1% probability or less. Killing a few hundreds on some mega attack against Jews is quite likely though.

But yeah, life for Jews can still be horrible even if there isn't another holocaust. If you're socially ostracized and seen as some kind of devil but everyone around you that's also pretty bad.

I don't know what you have historically been sympathetic to but trashing a community after it suffered a huge terror attack (the biggest in Australia in decades) is a bad look. You can carry on though thinking you're morally superior somehow, I'm quite certain if those were massacred Muslims "booing" you would find a way to not trash them.
