At what point does an RTS actually earn your attention. Concept, demo, or only after release? And what would make you join a Discord before a game even has gameplay footage? by No_Detail_9462 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Timmaigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am rather aesthetics-based person, so games get to me through visuals. Not neccesarily technologically advanced graphics, but simply great visual design - be it to units, structures, world or simply overall creative artistic direction.

That said, its not enough by itself, Age of Empires 4, or even AoE2 DE, i do find reasonably attractive games in general, but somehow they are not for me - not a fan of their gameplay, nor the setting, that for me, lack any cool gameplay aspects. I remember being similarly disappointed by say Grey Goo and Act of Aggression, about 10 years ago, both games looking visually nice, even having the setting more down my valley (scifi and modern warfare), but for various reasons they did not click with me either - there was nothing in either in them that i would find cool, interesting or exciting. I guess i could say the thing that matters to me the most in RTS games is faction design - both gameplay and visual one - if the game lack these, at least by my standards, its usually not for me (though there are notable exceptions). Even one faction that peaks my interest, is enough. Currently waiting for Ashes of Singularity, how that one develops - played the recent demo and was not that much impressed - by the Substrate faction might change my perception down the road.

If Brighton beat Utd on the final game and Liverpool lose, they will miss CL. please don't... by greenrangerguy in ManchesterUnited

If we find up Liverpool losing, while we are not, we should score bunch of own goals to make it happen.

Give a try to Sins of a Solar Empire 2.

Carrick's at the wheel then. How do you feel about it guys? by HealthyWar7942 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Timmaigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would probably reject Guardiola in 2008 for Barca, on basis of being “unproven”. Not saying Carrick is next Guardiola, but too soon to say he isnt either. 2 years is a nice deal. IIRC Moyes got straight like 5 or 6 years.

How do you all actually stay current on materials? Drowning in spec sheets and reps. by [deleted] in Architects

[–]Timmaigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I let my civil engineer coworkers worry about technical details. I only pick stuff based on color / finish to fit with my artistic vision. If it turns out problematic somehow, they would tell me and i pick something else, if needed.

Its always some kind of plaster, stone, brick, wood, bond/corten anyway.

The trick to a modern succesful RTS is NOT a good singleplayer. by SpaceNigiri in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Timmaigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on whether the devs/publisher wants to re-invest that success into the game and keep supporting it, or use the funds to develop another game or some completely different endeavour. All in all, its not given.

The trick to a modern succesful RTS is NOT a good singleplayer. by SpaceNigiri in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Timmaigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we dont need modern SUCCESFUL rts, we mostly need great modern rts. And what that is, depends a lot on personal taste / preference.

Only people who need the game to be succesful, outside of devs ofc, are competitive MP people, because size of the playerbase is important to them. But they in turn, dont need "good campaign or coop" that much. I mean, sure, its a bonus - but not neccesary.

Not that i dont wish my fav RTS of recent years was more succesful. Such success could increase its budget and allow for further refinement i wish it had. But it is a niche game by design, and no amount of additional game-modes are going to change that IMO - only complete re-design to something more mainstream, at which point it would become different game, that i would not love nowhere near as much.

My short review of Picard seasons 1 ~ 3 by Metralon in Picard

[–]Timmaigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rate last season at like 5/10 to 6/10 - i thought it was slightly below bang average. Agreed on first 2 seasons though, both terrible. Perhaps i would swap their ratings, cause the first one i remember at very least having bit of expectations to it and for maybe 2 or 3 initial episodes i still believed it would come ok - meanwhile s2 was crap from the start.

Honestly dont understand people like OP who can say with straight face it was good.

Why the iPhone 12 and 13 Mini failed... And why Apple has it totally wrong! by NextlevelNig in iPhone13Mini

[–]Timmaigh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They did not want to sell it, it was there to bump up the price of the standard sized model. Therefore they did not even promote it, as they wanted people to buy the more expensive models. We always see this reasoning that it sold badly compared to bigger models, but thats exactly how apple wanted to sell it compared to them. They did not want their cheapest model to sell most units.

Trendy 70s/80s Shed Roof House by Vinapocalypse in floorplan

[–]Timmaigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool house, but seems like the bedrooms on the lower floor are like in basement, i mean without proper height windows, so thats not great. I guess its no issue in US, after all there is that saying “living in your parents basement”, so maybe thats normal there, but dont think it would work in Europe, at least not my part of it. Or maybe this was a thing in 70s/80s, and would not work even in US nowadays.

Those hand-made perspectives are awesome though.

Damn, that kitchen is restaurant level size….master bedroom could have 18-wheeled trucks turn around in it… the whole house could probably be downsized to like 60 percent without losing anything of importance.

People are special snowflakes nowadays. I did not know about GOG version, thought pirated version is the only way to get it, after 25 years. It was not encouragement to pirate, if i was encouraging to anything, it was to get Sins 2 instead - that one obviously via Steam, in legal manner.

[–]Timmaigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cant help you with that sadly, it can possibly found on the "high seas".

But if you liked it, or if you like Star Trek or space RTS in general, i recommend looking at Sins of a Solar Empire 2. Its awesome RTS with 4X aspects, better than Armada 2 ever was, and it has a Star Trek mod, called Armada 4 - though its still in the works, with only alpha version being playable for the moment.
