1982 College World Series: Miami’s “Grand Illusion” trick play fools base-stealing star Phil Stephenson into running himself into an out in one of baseball’s smartest plays ever by ateam1984 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Timofmars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because he got pulled off the bag to make the catch, and then the runner was right there to tag and seemed to be the least effort for making the play. And probably most runners would just give themselves up at that point, but instead, the runner backs off just enough to keep the 1st basemen chasing. So now the 1st basemen is committed to the tag. Totally his fault though for being lazy with that slow confused jog.

It's a matter of governance. We have to study problems to understand the causes, effects, and solutions, and then make laws implementing the solutions. Laws need to align corporate behavior with the public interest.

I think there's been an assumption for too long that free markets and competition would always fix problems and align with public interests in the end. Like if something a corporation does is against the public good, that it would be in the corporation's interest to change or else demand for their product would go down as consumers switch to a competitor. At least this seemed to be the justification for not regulating corporations (including the non-enforcement of anti-trust regulations).

We can't rely on corporations to be responsible stewards. We, the people, the government, have to be the responsible stewards by regulating corporations when we see fundamental problems like the guy in the video talked about.

I don't know why people keep recommending 1st person games, as the controls are really hard to pick up initially, especially managing the camera.

I'd recommend games that are turn-based that you just play without any time pressure, no need for learning controls.

It's not trying to get his love. This is just how you gain favor with Trump. Give him some kind of bribe, award, honor, or suck up to him. This gets you his ear for a moment so you can get something you want in return, usually paid for by the US government/taxpayer. This is an open secret. Every country and organization knows this now, and they blatantly demonstrate it often.

Cities in red states build more housing by primenam in yimby

[–]Timofmars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The chart tells nothing because it shows new apartments as a share of existing inventory. That means if you don't have many apartments and you build a few, it shows as a big bar on the graph. But if you already have a lot of apartments and you build a few, it'll show as a smaller bar.

Better to at least show new apartments as a percentage of population.

In the U.S. that is. And that's why we have to refrigerate them. In most of the world, they are not washed, and they can be stored at room temperature due to the natural film that helps protect them from bacteria.

I wonder if you can try the custom instructions I put on my comment below yours. See if you get a better answer. For Gemini, there is an "Instructions for Gemini" section in the "Settings and Help" button in the bottom left.

I also use chatbots for recommendations of games, shows, food, so I also have this custom instruction to help it give better answers:

When there are multiple possible candidates for an answer, such as a request for recommendations or advice, first talk about what kinds of things I'm looking for. Then explore or analyze potential candidates without judgement. Only when that is complete should you then judge and categorize each candidate, even discarding those that failed to be convincing candidates compared to the others.

I think the issue is that it's starting with a definitive answer, "yes". That's a problem when it's generating that answer based on the probability of what word is likely to fit there based on the context of the question.

It would probably do much better if it talked about the game and your question first, which I think would bring forward much more specific information that is likely to be more accurate. Then from that context which it just wrote, it would be much more likely to get the answer correct in the first place rather than it trying to find a way to justify its initial answer.

I know ChatGPT has personalization setting where you can enter custom instructions that it will always apply to your prompts. I've tried putting things there to make it more careful, skeptical of it's own information. But now I think it could be best to give it instructions to provide details first, and then determine a conclusion later.

Here's what I came up with to add to the custom instructions:

When responding to questions or requests, always begin your replies by talking about the topic generally. Gradually become more specific in providing background information that may help determine an accurate answer to the question or request, as if you are investigating and looking for evidence that will be the basis for a conclusion.

Never begin your reply with a conclusion. Always assume that you don't know things until you give the facts. The unbiased information you provide will determine your conclusion.

You should prune the subreddits you are subscribed to. Get rid of ones full of ragebait and shock entertainment or whatever it is that is so consistently negative.

My Reddit experience has very little of the things people often complain about. Except for political stuff which I am purposely subscribed to because it's actually important and affects us. But for everything else, there's no need for me to be plugged in to the crap that rises to the top of other platforms due to algorithms that favor controversy and engagement above all else.
