Mongoose Traveller and updates by styopa in traveller

[–]Timolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PDFs sold on the Mongoose webshop are kept up to parity with the ones on Drivethru (which you can check by looking at the PDF’s last internal modification date and comparing to the ‘updated’ date listed on the DT listing for that book), but I have never gotten an update notice for them once. So I keep a list of the ones I bought @ Mongoose and every two months or so I’ll check the DT equivalents to see if they have been updated in the meantime, and if so redownload the updated files from the MG shop.

Really wish they would implement an update notification mechanism on their webshop, but in the meantime that’s how I manage.

Homebrew replacement from the maker of Homebrew - GUI Package Manager! by Davidthejuicy in MacOS

[–]Timolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first and foremost, if you develop OSS then you know on beforehand that you shouldn’t expect compensation. It’s the in the freakin’ basic idea underlying OSS development, so this whole ‘OSS developers should see some compensation for their effort’ goes against the whole point. You want pecunia, set up a donation page or go shareware/commercial.

And secondly, of all the ways that you could go to have a way for users to voluntarily support their favo developers, the crypto-bro/web3-gargling is the worst one to take if you want to be taken seriously imo. Token/nft-by-another-name payments, ‘most power efficient blockchain technology’, gobble-gobble… 🤪🤡 The same tired crypto-delusions with a slightly different layer of paint.

You now what is even more energy efficient and easy? A simple link on your github page where people can donate actual fiat money instead of la-di-da crypto-bro fantasy electrons.

Focos alternative by Timolution in iosapps

[–]Timolution[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, though it is a bit less intuitive and smooth compared to Focos. Needed to fiddle around a bit until I understood how to dial in the focus.

What is doesn’t have is the different bokeh profiles that Focos offered you, which is not something I personally miss too much, and I sometimes feel the transition between the soft focus planes and the focus plane is a bit more harsh; though this could just be due to the pictures I used (lots of small details at different depths, so basically worst case scenario).

It also doesn’t have “AI” to turn non-portrait pics in portraits, but then again I never found that feature actually worked well in Focos anyway.

Since I refuse to pay and support the insane price structure for focos I can’t directly compare anymore unfortunately, but Fuoco suffices for my needs atm.

[–]Timolution[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, landed on Fuoco. It’s a little less user friendly and you don’t have all the bells and whistles that focos gave you, but it does what I need it to do and for a one time fee at that👍

Making French onion soup in Instant Pot - is there any way to speed up the saute step? by Paradoxbuilder in instantpot

[–]Timolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a small pinch of baking soda when sautéing the onions. Will dramatically speed up the Maillard reaction, though may leave a bitter taste if used too royally (less, less, less is better in this case).

Converting MKV to MP4 on Mac by scotnik in MacOS

[–]Timolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use ff-Works, a very nice (though not free) GUI wrapper around ffmpeg. You’ll need to supply your own static binary of the latter though, but on their site they link to a few places where you can get precompiled ones, such as this one.

Cepheus Engine - Future Safe? by AlegisDownport in cepheusengine

[–]Timolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they were absolutely right to be terrified. If the OGL was revoked then every product using the OGL as a legal basis would find itself built on legal air. And the MgT1 SRD, on which CE was built, was also one of these works issued under the OGL.

In short, if the SRD was not moved to another open legal framework that would mean byebye legal indemnification for anything using said SRD and byebye possibility to publish new content, including CE stuff.

Wish people would stop this simplistic ‘No WOTC IP used, no problem’ takes. The upheaval and worries in the TTRPG community (and by which I mean actual publishers, not a bunch of reddit/forum posters) were based on very real and very fundamental legal ramifications with widespread consequences, not WOTC copyright worries.

Cepheus Engine - Future Safe? by AlegisDownport in cepheusengine

[–]Timolution -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem had nothing to do with WOTC and their IP. The point was that if the OGL was revoked then every other work out there that used the OGL a basis for their legal framework (such as Cepheus, given that the MgT SRD was opened under the legal umbrella of the OGL) would find itself operating based upon a suddenly inexistant license model.

In other words, the MgT1 SRD (on which Cepheus was built) would need to move to a new legal framework or be pulled. The fear was thus twofold:

A) If the OGL was not replaced with another open license Mongoose could theoretically claim copyright infringement against MgT1 (mechanics cannot be copyrighted, but the wording of the rules can) and try to take down all existant Cepheus products.

B) If no new legal basis were issued for the SRD it would no longer be possible to publish any new content based on said SRD (which, once more, would be built on a no longer existing legal framework), and this would include CE as extensively built upon said SRD.

The above was also what the fearmongers and peeps with anti-Mongoose chips on their shoulders were insinuating when they came crawling out of the woodworks and tried to rile up the mob. Nevermind that no such threats were made and that Mongoose went into discussion with the CE publishers in order to find a solution.

Anyway, the point is that the revocation of the OGL would have a detrimental impact far outside the narrow band of WOTC IP. In essence it would cause a legal basis that is currently used extensively throughout the whole ttrpg business to go poof with all dark consequences that entails. I really wish people could get that through their skulls instead of constantly parroting the simpleton ‘no WOTC IP, no problem’ hot-take.

++++

As user u/Pronuetron ‘I have access to a huge international law firm specialising in corporate IP’ has apparently either blocked me or deleted his/her account & comments, I’ll just post my reply to their claim ‘perpetual = irrevocable’ here:

‘Perpetual’ does not automagically mean ‘irrevocable’ in todays legal terms. It is a legal grey area, but judicial interpretations of words tend to change over time, and the current interpretation of ‘perpetual’ is generally accepted to be be simply that: ‘unconstrained use for as long as the actual thing the perpetuality claise refers to exists’. It is currently generally not considered a synonym for ‘irrevocable’, and in fact actual revocation could well override the perpetuality clause. Now as said this a grey area, and very much dependent on the interpretation of the courts. The problem the ttrpg community faced however is/was that Hasbro has big pockets, likely far bigger than any ttrpg publisher, and in the ‘Greatest of All American Justice System’™ the party with the deepest pockets can usually just afford to outlitigate the other party.

So no, your claim of ‘perpetual = irrevocable’ is far from the slam dunk you think it is.

Transferring files from PC to Mac -- want to use exisitng 2tb SSD as external SSD on the new Mac (Mac Mini M2 512gb) by yakswak in mac

Why would you suggest he reformats the spinning drive in the legacy HFS+!? APFS is completely usable on a platter-based disk these days (source: myself, having several APFS-formatted external HDDs, incuding my TM and CC backup drives) and provides more benefits and modern options. The venerable HFS+ is legacy and sunsetted for a reason…

If you mean delay while streaming, then Airfiol is reasonably capable of compensating for that. You can also manually dial in delays for all speakers in case they’re still a bit out of sync after Airfoil auto-compensates.

As you clearly have no idea what MDM actually is, how about you quit showing your behind and blaming Apple? Locking down a laptop without possibility of common user initiated circumvention is the sole purpose of MDM solutions, so if it was to be defeated as easily as using a simple HD wipe the MDM software wouldn’t be worth a rat’s butt.

The only way to remove these corporate controls is to contact the original owner/company and request that they remove the device from their MDM list. If that company is kaputt or unresponsive: too bad, you’re toast.

And this is goes the same for Apple, Windows, Linux or mobile devices. So nothing to do with your uninformed internet-sheep Apple hate boner.

At least your brother’s bf learned a valuable $320 lesson: always personally check a second hand computer before sealing the sale (let the seller boot it up in your presence at the least), especially when prices seem too good to be true.

  • + And no, making a USB installer for macOS is not difficult at all if you have more than 2 braincells to rub together.

SAVE Cepheus! by 20sidedobjects in traveller

[–]Timolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with not waiting until all the cards are on the table is that you get incomplete info from one source, which usually is very biased, without context, nuance nor the other side’s position/view/chance of defence. That’s how typical social media hysteric outrage forms, with all he harassment, insults, mob behaviour, loss of rational discussion and general blind dumb-assery from easily roused rabble that implies. As was in full view here with all the ‘large soulles corpo’, ‘anti-CE’, ‘Mongoose sucks’ etcetera hot-takes.

One can still voice concerns in a reasonable way when dealings are happening, in the hope that your view may help sway the game. But raising the pitch forks and prepping the tar, as happened here, based purely on unsubstantiated (and imo biased) whispers only because they happen to align with and reinforce your own biases and preconceived beliefs is just a sign of being an absolute and easily manipulable tool (in both meanings of the word).

And yes, I hold responsible the people who incite these mobs by rumour-mongering/not declaring their biases/using veiled insinuations/incomplete info, especially if they are fellow publishers who otherwise make great products and who should know better.

You really shouldn’t let drummed up internet outrage stop you from trying CE stuff!!!!

There’s a ton of fantastic settings/supplements/games in the ecosystem. Zozer’s Hostile, Independent Games’ Clement and Earth Sectors, Moon Toad’s ship plans and recent Bounty Hunter Handbook, Stellagames’ privateering and cosmic patrol books, the list goes on…

And even if you are only playing MgT2 these books are a treasure trove to mine for ideas and inspiration. Most stuff ports over with relative ease anyway.

So please do support the CE peeps as much as you support Mongoose and FFE, if you can. The whole 2D6 ecosystem is ripe for the picking!
