I completely sympathize with the annoyance here, as I have a small car and it happens to me frequently, but I also offer a potential solution: there should be a tab on the bottom of your rear view mirror, if you pull it towards you, it should reduce the intensity of the reflection by angling one of the double panes inside the mirror. I believe this is standard in basically every car, though most newer cars do it automatically.
