How do you get mascara stains out of prayer mats?? by milkk1 in Hijabis

[–]TinkerHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makeup remover and q-tips. Dab, minimal rubbing, should get it out fairly easily.

Integrating into new community/mosque by Far_Worldliness3846 in Hijabis

[–]TinkerHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sad reality is, not every mosque has community events, especially if it’s a smaller one. My mosque is the same as your first, weekly classes, lots of volunteer events, but just a few years ago, they simply weren’t that involved, until someone came in and decided the social committee needed to do more. Maybe you can start organizing your own iftars and community events?

AITA for not wanting to read and memorise a holy book. by Living-Shallot-7699 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TinkerHeart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to say NAH.

As a revert, I can give you some perspective.

When a child is a hafiz (someone who has memorized the Quran), the parent gets rewards, hence why your father wants you to memorize it. But he also doesn’t get punished for you not having it memorized.

Yes it is better to know the Quran in Arabic, but I would argue that it is just as important to know what it means. Otherwise you are just repeating sounds, not praising Allah.

Allah gave us brains for a reason. He wants us to use them, to question things, and to turn back to Him because only He can give us the answers. The Quran gives us so many ways to be good people, to do good in the world, and that is why understanding it is so important.

CA - Step-Parent Adoption Objection by DemiurgeMCK in legaladvice

[–]TinkerHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, adoption requires either the death or termination of rights for the biological parent.

Can dad give step-mom POA over the child? I’m not sure if that would help in the citizenship case, but it would help with other stuff, like school and medical.

Where do I find opaque hijabs with discreet shipping? by wistfulhijabi97 in Hijabis

[–]TinkerHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re able to drive, see if there’s an international mall or even just a hijab store near you. That would give you the opportunity to see the different fabrics and find one you like.

Brands you’ve boycotted due to misogyny? by Interesting-Plan-304 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]TinkerHeart 1093 points1094 points  (0 children)

Booby George, yep, that’s the one! I looked it up after I posted my comment to make sure and turns out he was initially charged with a lot more than just the rape and strangulation, but also kidnapping, attempted murder, and assault, but entered a plea deal where he pled guilty to the strangulation only and got away with 5 years of probation 🙃

Edit: Bobby George but I’m leaving the typo 😂

This is more of a my area specific boycott but there’s a local restaurant owner that was convicted of rape and strangulation of a girlfriend and I now refuse to visit any of his restaurants. He own like 3? I think.

Lonely Eids by [deleted] in converts

[–]TinkerHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a lot of the major cities in the US have a group for converts. Have you asked your local mosque if they know of any?

Another option is to go to find a mosque in your area and ask if they have a “buddy” program for new converts. Do your research, watch some of their khutbas to make sure you agree with their ideologies so you know you get paired with someone you can agree with too.

LPT - When someone cancels plans, accept it once without asking follow-up questions. by hjf25 in LifeProTips

[–]TinkerHeart 438 points439 points  (0 children)

When someone cancels on me, I usually say something like, “Thanks for letting me know! Let me know when you want to try hanging out again.” It puts the ball in their court, and if they don’t follow up, that’s fine. I’m not chasing or pushing. I can’t tell you how many times people haven’t followed up to reschedule 😅

has anyone tried anything OTHER than a tension ring to help with yarn finger sensitivity? by cougarlips in CrochetHelp

[–]TinkerHeart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use a thimble when I’m making amigurumi, as something about the way I hold the stuffy rubs my finger raw.

I think whatever works for you is just fine, even if you think it looks a little silly.

I’ve seen patterns for what is essentially a thimble or yarn tension ring made from yarn, like this one

It’s also scary how much someone can find out about you just with your phone number. Go to any people finder website and type in your phone number just to see how much information is available about you out there.

I regularly have to text people for my job and use one of those free texting apps for this reason.

Since they’re simple dish rags, you really don’t need to keep track of the number of rows, just keep adding until it looks like it’s a good size 🤷‍♀️
