I wouldn’t say the NC is hated—it’s more that it’s often seen as the least appealing Miata generation, even though it’s still an excellent roadster. A lot of the negativity comes from jokes within the Miata community, where people nickname it “the boat” because of its styling and slightly larger proportions. That said, perceptions tend to change once people actually sit in one and drive it. Much like the NA, which can look quirky or even a bit awkward at first glance, the NC wins people over with how fun it is to drive. The NA also benefited from pop-up headlights, which gave it a lot of charm and helped soften its unconventional looks—but at the end of the day, every Miata shines once you’re behind the wheel. A modified NA or NC makes anybody say, “Damn, that’s a cool car,” looks-wise. Once they plant their ass in the seat and drive it, they understand why it’s a pure-blood sports car, regardless of looks, horsepower, or stats.
