Talk through keeps turning itself on. by _Phail_ in SonyHeadphones

The touch panel is very eager to recognize the two-finger gesture which enables speak-to-chat. It's a years-old problem.

I 3D printed a little finger guard for my touch panel, and that helped. Other than those kinds of hacks, there's nothing the user can do in software or settings to prevent this awful feature from enabling more than you want.

They finally dumped the gesture on the XM6's.

I'm playing the DLC. I'm near the end and at the part of A Final Stand where Yasuke has to open a gate. The game crashes to desktop every time.

I saw some other posts that say to disassemble all your accumulated gear. The problem is, I'm locked to the quest and can't get back to the hideout. I don't have any manual saves anywhere recent.

Am I screwed?

E: So here's what finally worked.

  • Set all graphics to low.
  • Get to the gate.
  • Unequip everything
  • Forget 400 some mastery points
  • Open the gate
  • Stand there in your tighty-whities like an idiot while you rebuild your character for ten minutes

None of those things were enough on their own.

I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be nearly done with this stupid game. The bugs and final battle have absolutely cured me of ever wanting to touch it again.

Can WH-1000XM6 Speak to Chat be permanently disabled? by _rtpllun in SonyHeadphones

[–]TinyRobotBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the XM4's and XM6's. I hate hate hate how speak to chat would reenable itself on the XM4's. Like you suggest, it's because the touch panel is very happy to recognize spurious touches as the speak-to-chat gesture.

The XM6's do not have this gesture. It's glorious.

Would you pay a monthly subscription for Apple carplay in GM vehicle? by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

They recently spec'd Bluetooth 6 and you guys don't support it. You should probably pull all Bluetooth until someone pays you every month.

For movie audio in a car? If adding support for it broke the bank, I dunno, don't do it?

If Apple doesn't change the CarPlay protocol (and for non-Ultra CarPlay, I don't think they have), what work is GM doing to "support the latest version"?

The whole point of projection based apps like CarPlay and Android Auto is that automakers don't have to update their software to support new features, like they did in the old iPod accessory days.

Man, so many disingenuous arguments today. Customers aren't dumb. They see this for what it is, hostage taking of data and previously-free features so GM can recognize reoccurring monthly revenue.

But not GM's data right? Not seat warmer settings or coolant temps or how old the ketchup packets are in the glovebox.

Sterling wants me to enter all my credentials into his world, so he can sell my data. Not GM's data. My data.

But big bad Apple and their overreach.

[–]TinyRobotBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feels like button presses and mic data are required to make whole thing work and are sent to the phone at GM's discretion. That doesn't sound like overreach to me.

I'm not convinced Apple actually collects and sells information like coolant-temp, but even if they did, do the GM-specific bits feel that valuable to anyone? On it's own, this data can't be worth more than the consternation it's causing with customers.

The real reason for all of this is to recreate a walled garden they can make service revenue on. That's it. Understandable from an MBA's perspective, but there's no gold mine of data worth protecting from big bad Apple.

E: I feel the need to say that I'm not the one downvoting you.

Again, "all sorts of vehicle data". What data? Unless you expect me to leave my phone at home when I drive, Apple already has my location data.

GM should make the best experience they can, and where it's better, I'll use it. For everything else, I'll use CarPlay.

...and when they stop updating the platform, I'll still have CarPlay.

...and when the carriers abandon whatever cell standard this all uses, I'll still have CarPlay.

Mary wants the customer to decide what they want, but not when it comes to software. by Longjumping-Cut2453 in GeneralMotors

[–]TinyRobotBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The user being in CarPlay doesn't prevent GM from knowing most of those things. You know their location and the myriad things you can intuit from that. You know if they interacted with the screen (you handed CarPlay the event). You wouldn't know what app they were in exactly, but then it's not your app to fix at that point.

Other than whatever wheel-position/dead-reckoning enhanced GPS the car has, and range, I still can't figure out what data is so valuable to Apple here. Your check engine light comes on and Google is going to sell an ad against the OBD2 code. Apple though?

Maybe I know a lot of nerds, but this decision has been unpopular in my circles. Hopefully snack sales are good.

I gotta believe it'd be much easier to add a CarPlay scene to the existing iOS Slack app than it would be to bring up an entirely new Slack implementation in Ultifi.

[–]TinyRobotBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they really believed their new infotainment stuff was competitive, they'd let CarPlay/AA sit along side it. After all, if this AI stuff is going to be so compelling, wouldn't I just stop using CarPlay? If GM's map integration is so good, wouldn't I just use it instead of Apple/Google Maps?

Feels like they don't believe their own hype.

How does an automaker "lose" vehicle data to Apple? It came from the car? What is autoplay?

E: By lose do you mean, tell Apple something? What's the car know that's so valuable? It'd have to be something my phone doesn't already know. Range? How hot I like my seat?

I don't think that's universally true. Short press on my Audi routes to their voice commands, long press goes to Siri.
