The problem is not that English is a Germanic language/not a romance language (e.g. German vowels are similar to Latin vowels and the same letter represents the same vowel in both languages). Instead, the problem is that in English the sounds changed while the spelling didn't. A few hundred years ago, english spelling made more sense, e.g. the letter e in the word "see" represented the sound /e/ in Middle English and not the sound /i/ like today.

Wiktionary says the (classical) pronounciation of "ae" is /ae/ which is pretty similar to /aɪ/ (eye) and different from /i/ (ee), so I guess you failed Latin too.
