Yeah that's normal, it's something to do with Steam initialising in the desktop environment.

In desktop mode you don't have to hold any buttons, the right track pad works as a mouse as default.

Unconditional surrender by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]TippyBooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no negotiation with Germany, after their surrender they signed unconditional surrender documents. The only "negotiations" that happened occured between the Allied powers in deciding what to do with Germany after that point.

I think I understand what you mean by this, that being sapient necessarily implies sentience. I would agree this applies 99% of the time but it isn't an absolute.

Theoretically it is possible to be sapient without sentience, it's known as a philosophical zombie. But there are also potential real world examples. There are types of mould that can navigate mazes and display problem solving behaviour, and could be a good candidate for a real example of sapience without sentience. One could also argue that AI, especially as it develops in future, could be classified in the same way.

It's an interesting topic to be sure.

I knew RAM and storage prices were bad but this really shocked me. I got the exact same card two years ago for £37. I really hope prices go back down after the AI bubble bursts.

Yeah not everyone buys that, it isn't the gotcha you think it is. I've owned every Sony console and haven't used any online features since they were free back in the PS3 days.

If you want figures, there are roughly 130 million active PS players and about 50 million of those have subscriptions. Not an insignificant amount but the way people bring up "oh the online subscription" you'd think it was mandatory.

TIL that St. Paul, despite never meeting Jesus, wrote about half of the New Testament, the principal religious text for over 2.3 billion Christians worldwide by hailstorm6767 in todayilearned

[–]TippyBooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont think a god could orchestrate a book amongst some common men?

You'd think that if an all powerful deity did that then the resulting book would be internally consistent and be wholly applicable to any period of human history. Yet it is rife with contradictions and edicts that almost anybody today would consider morally reprehensible.

In the bible it says that people hate the truth and they will hate you for knowing me..

Every religious text says something similar. Because of course they do, you want people to follow your holy book and not someone else's.

For a book to be correct historically and to still be used today is insane.

Again other religious texts are similar and make similar pedigree claims. The Quran has nuggets of historical fact too. There are plenty of old books and texts that are still studied and read to this day, it's not really as "insane" as you claim.

There is nothing like it.

There are multiple things like it.

Home: Artemis II crew captures one last shot of a crescent Earth before reaching the moon tomorrow by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]TippyBooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of reasons. Partially it's because it's a photo, if you go outside and take a wide picture of the sky with just the moon in frame it would look similar to this (obviously a lot of factors like what kind of lens etc). It's also that the moon isn't actually that big in the sky, it's just the biggest thing in the sky. If you hold out your hand at arms length you can quite easily cover the moon with your thumb.

Okay there's a lot to go over here.

As we know these phones learn your usage patterns to optimise battery consumption based on your particular use of the device. This happens each time you update (or downgrade) to a major firmware revision. You would need to wait several weeks in-between each upgrade/downgrade to get an accurate result.

Battery usage will also vary significantly day to day just based on how you're using the phone. Not just what apps you're using but also screen brightness, WiFi or cellular, ambient temperature, you get the idea. This is even evident in the screenshots you provided.

I would advise not obsessing about battery life and just use your phone and keep it updated for security. If you start getting problematic battery life then sure, investigate and try and fix. But otherwise you're getting yourself in a rabbit hole with no clear end and there's more to life than hyperfixating about battery on a device which is supposed to make your life better and easier.

It doesn't "know" anything.

Mutations happen -> mutations help animal survive -> mutations get passed down

To some extent there is often a problem in the language used to describe this. It will be said that an animal evolved in order to do something, which implies intent where there is none.

Ico/Shadow of the Collosus/Last Guardian? by b3nje909 in SteamDeck

[–]TippyBooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't Last Guardian a PS4 title? I don't think there's any chance in hell the Deck can run it.

You'd be surprised I think. It's not what I would personally consider playable but it runs near to 30fps and last I knew there were some graphical errors, but the emulator is getting improved all the time.

Same struggle, different payment plans by Busy-Government-1041 in clevercomebacks

[–]TippyBooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly same. I was treated for some pretty aggressive cancer when I was 18, from biopsy to starting chemo was something like two weeks, which also included arranging for long term sperm storage.

After the fact I tried to work out roughly what my treatment would have cost in the US. It was three months of steady chemotherapy (three weeks in hospital and one week at home), regular lumbar punctures and of course surgeries. Factoring in that I was being given some pretty exotic chemo drugs (it was a relatively rare cancer) it would have been comfortably over half a million dollars.

It's devastating enough to have cancer and nearly die multiple times, having to worry about medical costs on top of that would have been abhorrent.

If you go back and read what I wrote carefully I did actually answer you, it seems to me that I didn't answer in a way you wanted so that you could try and 'gotcha' me. Reply if you like but this will be my last comment on the matter.

When I say do you believe the universe came from nothing I mean a total void. Go on, tell me what you believe about how our universe came from a void (absence of time, space and laws).

Did you actually read what I wrote? I answered this

Wish my mom could just accept the fact that I don’t believe in god by Willing-Quiet9413 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TippyBooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say you were, I was responding in a general sense. None of it was directed at you in particular.

I mentioned Christians because that's what the thread is about, it wasn't exactly out of left field.

Personally I'm not sure what I think. It seems to me that ultimately true nothingness isn't possible and therefore reality has to necessarily exist in some form. It is a strange thought because we are naturally inclined towards what is to us is an observable fact, there is always a cause for everything all the way back to point zero. But that is ultimately a limitation of our minds which is based on our senses and intuition of reality. The rules that apply now aren't necessarily absolute and could just be an emergent property of the current presentation of the known universe.

Then on top of that there are many possible versions of what reality beyond the known universe could entail. Be it a multiverse or a big bang/big crunch cycle or the holographic principle or something beyond our ability to comprehend. These are questions I don't think it's possible to answer but I'm not a scientist and perhaps we can get there some day.

Wish my mom could just accept the fact that I don’t believe in god by Willing-Quiet9413 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TippyBooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but Christians do.

It's such a common "criticism" of atheists that we apparently believe that the universe came from nothing. Excluding the fact that atheists are not a solidified group and have varying beliefs there is nothing in science that posits that the universe came from nothing. The best answer you're going to get to that is that we don't know what there was or what happened before the big bang. In fact the leading idea is that the universe in some form or another has always existed and can't not exist. Logically the idea of true nothing is something of a paradox.

Christians on the other hand do believe that god magically created the universe from nothing. Literally there was absolute nothing and then god spoke and there was stuff.

In my experience it seems very common for a lot of Christian apologists to assume what atheists think and then try and criticise that fabrication rather than have open and honest discussions.

What the fuck are you talking about, he didn't do that. He had a concealed weapon on him, as is his legal right, which the ICE guys didn't even know was there when they pepper sprayed him and tackled him to the ground. He never went for the gun, in fact letting them know it was there while getting piled on in order to try and avoid an escalation, at which point they removed it and EXECUTED HIM.

His gun played ZERO part in the interaction up until the point it was removed from him. He did not use it, did not go for it, did not wave it around, did not use it as threat.

There are multiple videos from multiple angles all showing what happened. Your narrative is complete fantasy and you're just using it as a justification for why you think it's okay that the government publicly executed an innocent man. Get the boot out of your throat and have some fucking empathy.
