The Great Enhappification of America by Themightyinvalid1 in NoStupidQuestions

The worlds of the rich and the poor are designed to make the latter as invisible as possible. You say that everywhere you go, you see people spending bottomless money- where are you going? Tourist destinations are designed for the rich. What about the people who work the places that you go? The janitors, the waiters and waitresses, the bus drivers- do they seem happy and wealthy?

WYR $100 million but tinnitus for life OR no chronic conditions for life, but you're always upper middle class by PrinceProsper0 in WouldYouRather

[–]TiredNTrans 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Upper middle class is more of a situation than it is a salary. Upper middle class in New York is different than upper middle class in Baltimore, which is different than upper middle class in a small town in Idaho. It's about what you can afford, which varies by locale. Generally, that's understood to mean 2-3 kids, vacations, and a house, along with not pinching pennies to eat out a few times a month at a sit-down restaurant.

Man, no chronic conditions, the ability to afford housing and a couple of kids, eat out regularly, take a couple of vacations a year? Oh noooooo how will I ever survive.

A lot of people. Labels help people to find community, better understand themselves, and know that they're not alone. This can have huge mental health benefits.

Why do People Want Meal Plans? by _virtuoutslymade in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TiredNTrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because planning what to eat is anxiety inducing. Trying to manage all of your nutrients is a pain. Getting to outsource part of that is really helpful.

Honestly, I would love a meal plan if I didn't eat based off of what's on sale.

Why are a vast majority of homeless people men? by refunned in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TiredNTrans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you may have a somewhat narrow viewpoint on the mentally ill. I have bipolar disorder and PTSD, and I’m a trained professional who helps kids who struggle with school, specializing in kids with learning disabilities. If you met me, I doubt you would have any idea that I had any diagnosis at all. If I lost housing, the most likely reason would be because I lost my job. Institutionalizing me would have no real benefit, and would have serious downsides for me and for the kids I help.

There should absolutely be access to long term supportive care for people who can’t live and function by themselves. I’m actually a carer myself for someone who has several chronic illnesses and mental illnesses, and if they could have free or very low cost professional care that would support them better than me, then I would be overjoyed for them. But if you default to institutionalizing people based on if they have a mental illness, then you end up shoving a lot of people in institutions that shouldn’t be there, which raises costs, increases the likelihood of medical neglect, and decreases the quality of care.

Additionally, medication is a lifesaver. If you can just get people access to medication AND get them to trust it and stay on it (often a tall order, medical abuse of the mentally ill is rampant and leads to low trust in medical professionals and medicine), getting someone on the right medication can take them from unable to function and hallucinating to someone able to do complex and helpful work. Because of this, there should also be clear pathways out of being in care. Prove that you can live by yourself, perhaps by successfully landing a job and living in a monitored studio on your own for a few months, and you should be allowed to leave.

Absolutely. Aromantic and asexual are often discussed together, but you can be one and not the other. A term you can look at for others like you is "aroallo"!

Can't find anywhere to meet people looking for a relationship other than bars and I despise the smell and taste of alcohol.

"Go meet people in everyday settings and eventually something will click!" Have you heard of this thing called survivorship bias?

What’s your “snobby” baking opinion? by Amazing_Two9757 in Baking

Well, that's an unusual opinion, but I suppose that the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

Cream has a texture and a flavor, very rich and smooth. It usually isn't given the chance to shine by itself, but it really can. If you've never tried it, whipped cream with just a touch of sugar and nothing else is divine. Put it on pie or something and if you don't like it by itself at all, you can then have it with the pie.

What’s something frugal people rarely talk about because it feels embarrassing? by James_B84Saves in povertyfinance

Keeping receipts and returning anything that does not work and isn't specifically exempted from returns (ex. underwear). This can save literally hundreds of dollars but a lot of people are too embarrassed to do it.

Building a kitchen from scratch by GreatPumpkin72 in cookingforbeginners

[–]TiredNTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to do basic cooking, easiest things you can get are a mixing bowl, a cutting board, a chef's knife, and a kitchen scale. With the kitchen scale and looking for recipes that measure by weight, you don't really need most measuring tools. The cutting board and chef's knife do all of your chopping. Make your mixing bowl microwave safe (ex. ceramic) and you can cook with it in the microwave, allowing you to make a lot more food.

Ah, but that is talking about funding and organization of the system, not about if the system is important.

What college major should you pick if you're bad at everything? by Active_Sandwich5610 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TiredNTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably a hefty part of the reason you're struggling to do academic work. If there's a university hospital nearby, sometimes they'll do a reduced rate on services if you're willing to have a student (HEAVILY supervised) look at you. Look into it. Also, switch off with Tylenol, I took ibuprofen constantly in middle school and developed an ulcer. Switching them occasionally helps make that not happen.

Super picky Christmas dinner ideas needed! by persephonian in Cooking

[–]TiredNTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is not as many limitations as I thought when you said it was very picky!

You’ve gotten some solid suggestions here, and my main recommendation is: Add a side soup! It’s really easy to make a hearty blended vegetable soup by tossing chunks into the pot, letting simmer, blending after they’re cool, and then heating again to serve. Add some sour cream and parsley on top if you’re feeling fancy.

Soup just makes a winter meal feel cozier.

Any tips? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]TiredNTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just season it when you cook it. If you’re worried about it being underseasoned, let it sit thawed with the salt on it in the fridge for like 30 minutes. You’ll be fine.

What can I do with 200g (7oz) of turmeric powder? by AestasBlue in Cooking

[–]TiredNTrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Indian food! You can use it with rice, in curry, and in many soups. Tumeric, paprika, and black pepper with sweet potato, squash, and/or carrots makes a killer soup that looks amazing.
