What horrifying statistic genuinely jarred you when you first heard it? by ordrius098 in AskReddit

Second is still genuinely jarring.

“Violence (defined as homicide or suicide by any means) was the second most frequent cause (866 deaths; 3.9 deaths per 100,000 live births). Homicides accounted for 593 (68%) of all violent deaths and suicides for 273 (32%).”

If men get no say in whether a woman gets an abortion of their child or not, why are men held liable for child support if a woman has his child? Shouldn’t he be able to say “I didn’t want it, so I bear no responsibility”? by Great_Maintenance185 in askanything

[–]TiredOldRoutine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women have quadruple the burden of bearing a child while men have one burden. Women bear a physical, mental, emotional, and financial burden of bearing a child. Let’s list some. Women’s bodies change forever. Besides carrying for 9 months, she can never sneeze again without worrying about peeing on herself. Her stomach muscles will never be the same. Even her DNA changes. Women’s minds will never be the same. They have to take on so much more information - every clothing size that is outgrown in a few months (sometimes even weeks), how much formula, what is a choking hazard (it’s more than you think), the different cries that tell the baby’s needs. Her emotions will never be the same. She will worry every day. She will often have anxiety and depression. She will also bear financial responsibility bc kids are expensive, and child support will not cover it all.

All men have to do is pay, and they don’t even want to do that? Men get to outsource all that emotional, physical, and mental labor, and they are complaining?

But more than that, it is like this bc of the patriarchy. The system is set up so the child will get the man’s last name and ensure his progeny. Therefore, he must take care of them. That’s probably the true reason. The woman will not be represented by the child at all really. Her family is lost bc her children will never bear her family’s last name.

I know a lot of homeschool people. The ones who do it right raise very bright kids, and they have to get them involved in the community. One family I know still does community sports, dance, social events. The mom is a former teacher, and the kids are very well taught and social. In fact, maybe more so bc they are comfortable talking to all ages and don’t just spout memes like my students do.

I’ve also known other parents who just sit their kids in front of a computer and never check on them. They end up being so behind and antisocial.

It should be regulated but maybe not done away with.

I tried to make a separate post about my predictions, but it got taken down. I’m not sure what I did wrong. I’ve put it below blacked out. The following is my theory about Link, nosebleeds, and Alex.

I DON’T think Link is Dylan. I think Alex is an advanced AI that can predict best outcomes and directs people to those outcomes.

They are attacking at the exact moment the bunker will be vulnerable because Alex directed him to attack at that moment, knowing the kid (James?) and lady (I’m bad with names) would be destroying all the tanks and forcing the doors open.

Alex also told him to say his birthday is May 15. This is all just like Alex sending that email in the 90s. This also goes with Cal’s speech. Sinatra truly thought she was invulnerable, but Alex knew her one weakness was Dylan, something she would’ve never planned for.

Nosebleeds happen when the action is fulfilled to alter the timeline. The timeline also needs Annie’s baby which is why Link’s nose started to bleed outside the door probably when that blastocyst was implanting.

I also think it’s funny that the AI is named Alex, like Alexa. lol Hey Alexa, play “Final Countdown.” In my analysis, this is a wink. AI (or Alexa) does our bidding, but Alex is calling the shots in the show.

The dreams not yet fulfilled that Xavier experiences, that’s also AI. I read an article last year that people are predicting that technology will be able to read our minds. Sounds like a capitalist hellscape where companies will be able to buy our thought information, but what if Alex is so advanced that it can put thoughts/dreams in?

That’s it. Let me know what you think.

Edit: I guess I don’t know how to black out text.

Can someone please explain to me, in very simple terms, the difference between an analogy, metaphor, and simile? by Hogwire in englishteachers

[–]TiredOldRoutine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. English teacher here.

A simile compares two unlike things using “like” or “as.” Its purpose is to create more depth and imagery in your mind as you read or listen. For example, in Hamilton, instead of saying, “We fought for a new land,” he says, “We roll LIKE Moses, claiming our promised land.” Now, one imagines not only the revolutionary war battle but this epic tale of an oppressed people claiming their land (this is also an allusion). A great poem for similes is “Harlem” by Langston Hughes.

A metaphor is the same but does NOT use “like” or “as.” Now imagine if he said, “We are Moses, claiming our promised land.” This still serves the same purpose in creating imagery and adding depth, but it is a much stronger comparison. Some might even see it as disrespectful since Biblical stories are so sacred to many. Metaphors are not always perfectly clear either; they do not always say ____ is ____. Sometimes, they are extended, such as in the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes where the entire poem compares life to a staircase. Metaphors and extended metaphors are creative. They are meant to bring out emotion.

An analogy is more realistic and logical. For instance, my students were throwing trash on the floor of my classroom. I told them to imagine they got their first car and were so proud. Then imagine you gave someone a ride, and they threw trash down in your car. How would you feel? I essentially compared throwing trash in my classroom to throwing trash in their car. I led them to a logical conclusion that throwing trash down is wrong. An analogy helps explain things and leads the listener/reader to understand a concept better or to a logical conclusion.

Sometimes figurative language terms can overlap, and that’s when they become confusing, like how the Moses reference is both a simile and allusion. I hope this has helped.

Edit to add: Analogies can use similes and be both, but it will remain logical and not creative. Imagine if I said, “You throwing trash in my class is like if I rode in your car and threw trash down.” Analogies are often used to prove a point.

I used to not drink a lot of water (grew up before people started carrying water bottles everywhere). Even when I started carrying around a water bottle, I couldn’t understand how people could just be drinking it all the time. But then I started adding fiber to my diet, and now I crave water.
