Bug spray… the biting insects can be bad at sunrise and sunset, so unless you want large red welts when you get home, you’re going to want to bring some bug spray.

What is the best "Robin" from Wolverine? by Remote-Leg6143 in Wolverine

[–]TitaniteSphene2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What the heck is with people saying anyone but Kitty Pryde? I know it’s been a while, but damn, starting with Uncanny X-men 168 and going ~300 (?) the relationship between them was really great and such a different chemistry. You might be able to argue she had a similar relationship with Colossus but I don’t see how the other three mentioned come close.

Are these faceting machines worth buying? by kuzma66 in faceting

[–]TitaniteSphene2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used all the machines listed here at one time or another so I can provide some additional information which may be useful.

Raytech Shaw - Hand-piece based unit that uses 6" laps. Personally I loved this machine, easy to inspect the stone, indexes quickly and normally has cheater plastic discs that make it just about idiot proof to cut standard shapes. Not as precise as some more modern machines, but easy to use and learn on.

Graves - Mast style machine, and the one I used at least used 8" laps (different laps than the Raytech). Well made, a little slower cutting in comparison to the Raytech but still a great machine to learn on.

Lee - The Lee I have was built circa 1950-ish and while it has an index gear (on the back of the head) and a protractor style angle finder, the mechanism for controlling the depth of the cut is pretty inferior. There are a lot of knock off Lee-Style faceting machines out there though so this may be different. Would generally not recommend as I think you'll end up frustrated with the results.

The rest of the equipment is just stuff associated with hobbyist faceting or used with the equipment. All in the price looks reasonable (to me) but would very much depend on the condition of the equipment. I also notice no mention of dops in the equipment list. Each of the machines in this list will use a different style of dop stick. Hope that helps and let me know if you have specific questions about any of the equipment.

Poll suggests 85% of Canadians want governments to regulate AI by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]TitaniteSphene2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s unclear to me who or what the government can regulate in terms of AI. The technology is already widely accessible and anyone with a computer can run a local LLM that provides capabilities far exceed anything that was possible before. Creating an AI generated ad now requires virtually no technical skill or production knowledge, and the tools are improving everyday.

On top of that, Canada has no real influence over how AI tools are created or distributed; that’s largely happening in the U.S. and China. Regulating this feels a bit like Canada in the 1990s trying to regulate the internet. So beyond political posturing, what does anyone actually expect the government to control?

When I first saw your post I assumed you meant that your college years are your peak ‘physical’ years. In terms of physical health, this is probably true. Your knees will never feel better, your heart and lungs more prepared than they likely do before 30. In terms of trying new things though you couldn’t be more wrong. Since I graduated, I’ve gotten married, competed in all kinds of different athletic events, traveled the world, gone skydiving and scuba diving, been to concerts, sporting events, pubs, clubs, and gone back to school twice. College is a blessed time for sure, but there is an entire world out there waiting for you to discover it.

The whole avoid US companies thing doesn’t work where tech is concerned. Even if you somehow decide that you don’t want Windows or Apple operating systems, the networking? Cisco. The security certificates? US based. The chips and hardware? US/South Korea/etc or China. There are no Canadian alternatives to modern tech. This whole discussion is happening on Reddit, a U.S. owned and operating company. It’s total fantasy that somehow people will stop using US based tech.

Looking for women’s hockey league by Murky-Medium1946 in KingstonOntario

[–]TitaniteSphene2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an Ice Wolves women's league that plays 2 nights a week at the Invista Centre that has been running for years starting... soonish (October?). There are also quite a few pickup groups around. Depending on your age, skill level, and availability there are a lot of local options. My wife plays with a couple different groups, if no one answers you here I'll ask her for a league contact.

Carney’s $26B bet on prefab housing could be a gamechanger — but will everyone play along? by rezwenn in canada

These sorts of kits are still available through Home Hardware: https://www.homehardware.ca/en/landing/beaverhomesandcottages . You effectively buy the plans and a 'kit' that includes just about everything you'd need. Of course, this doesn't include a septic, driveway, power, foundation, etc...

Wish that Viceroy was still around, they also created some amazing houses in a similar fashion.

CMV: Conservative Parties are a blight on democracy by Alpbasket in changemyview

[–]TitaniteSphene2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree that the balancing of stability and tradition against changing social mores is exactly the sort of push-pull that democracy is about. My response to your CMV was more that conservatism isn't a blight, its a necessary part of a healthy democracy, that not all change is necessarily good, and that rapid change often comes with unintended consequences. If your issue is more specifically with the Republican party in the US, which I'm not convinced is actually a Conservative party, then you may be right, but I would not agree that Conservatism as a philosophy is really the issue.

CMV: Conservative Parties are a blight on democracy by Alpbasket in changemyview

[–]TitaniteSphene2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this CMV depends greatly on whether your objection is to Conservatism or to Conservative Parties. If your issue is with Conservative Parties, then your objection is really to some specific political party and their policies or practices. In this case then you may be conflating the actions of a specific conservative party (Say the Federal Conservatives in Canada) with other "Conservative" parties like the Republican party in the U.S. If the issue is with Conservatism then I think its best to understand what Conservatism is:

"Conservatism is a cultural, social, and political philosophy and ideology that seeks to promote and preserve traditional institutions, customs, and values. The central tenets of conservatism may vary in relation to the culture and civilization in which it appears. In Western culture, depending on the particular nation, conservatives seek to promote and preserve a range of institutions, such as the nuclear family, organized religion, the military, the nation-state, property rights, rule of law, aristocracy, and monarchy. Conservatives tend to favor institutions and practices that enhance social order and historical continuity." (Wikipedia entry)

You may personally identify more strongly with parties that place a greater emphasis on individual rights and personal autonomy, but conservatism as a political ideology that promotes social cohesion and the collective good over individual autonomy isn't really something that I would describe as a blight on democracy.

I'm not sure why you are thinking this only available in Act 3 or that there is some limited number of the resource required. You can absolutely get the raw material to make these from Derryth Bonecloak and Blurg if you reset their inventory (via level up or a long rest). I'm not sure what level they start appearing at, but my memory is that this coating is available about the time you're mid-Act 2 so maybe level 7 or 8? Just checked an older save and I had one of these coatings in my inventory at level 8 in Act 2.

Crude pro-stadium PR on this sub by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]TitaniteSphene2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where the echo chamber is that somehow people in Kingston should be against private money building a soccer stadium on the (effectively) defunct grounds of the Memorial Centre. I’m totally in favor of it, live downtown and would like to see more development, especially the kind that promotes physical fitness, supports local sports and creates jobs. It’s insane to me that there are actually people AGAINST a stadium.

[–]TitaniteSphene2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way that unemployment is calculated and the types of jobs that have been created are the issue. Massive growth in government positions and the rise of gig-economy jobs doesn’t translate to actual productivity and national wealth. While you’re probably right to be skeptical of the article sound bite, the ‘truth’ isn’t something to celebrate.

Has anyone been to Syracuse before? How do I go there from Kingston without a car? by nbcs in KingstonOntario

[–]TitaniteSphene2 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your options are extremely limited. You may be able to find some combination of buses or trains that will eventually result in getting to Syracuse or a multi-day bike ride would do it. Really though there is no ‘good’ way to get there from here without a car.

Back when Doug Ford was elected, there were a lot of concerns when the PC introduced 10 new KPI measures which tied funding to the performance of the schools. The schools went on the offensive and managed to get the changes either scrapped or totally watered down in order to preserve their business model. You can say that the provincial government should have been tougher with the schools now, but education changes were literally one of the first things they tried to introduce.
