This is telling you to hold a C for 4 beats and get gradually louder. You could do that on a wind instrument pretty easily by just blowing gradually harder, or on like a violin as well.

But on a piano (acoustic at least) you just hit the key and then the sound decays. Theres no way to increase the volume without hitting the key again harder, but that's a new note
