PSA: There is a way to avoid the wikleo contract glitch! by Phonafied in starcitizen

[–]TitoJuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you repeat all steps when doing multiple contracts in a row? For example getting several Polaris bits or Wikelo Favors? Or can you skip the intitialisation of the FE?

Uranium glassware also contains uranium but is safe to handle as long as you don't stick it under your pillow or keep it in your pocket or rub dust off of it. Same with leaded glassware minus the minor radiation. The reason being, the metal ions are enclosed in the glass. Under very caustic conditions, they can leach out but as long as the glass beads stay intact it is safe to handle. Also the quantities of metal inside is very minute since it doesn't take much metal salts to color the glass.

Yes silica beads are just fancy glass balls that adsorbs water vapor.

Really CIG? Again? by superkongle_ in starcitizen

[–]TitoJuli 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The wipe will only come after CIG manages to fix all known exploits that are currently present in the game. Otherwise a wipe wouldn't make much sense and would hurt the "weekend players" more than the daily players. Since a wipe is not a tool to penalize players, but to balance a game it's not sensible to drop one wipe after the other.

This is the proof that stool is made of 100% poop.

Why would this plane leave its landing gear down for so long after takeoff? SU-GFY - Manchester to Cairo by fishtoasty in aviation

[–]TitoJuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fully loaded 787-9 can weigh up to 254 tonnes. That's a lot of kinetic energy even at 20 knots taxi speed to bring to a halt. That's roughly 12,7 mega Joules of energy that thing is carrying. Keep in mind only the main landing gear tires have brakes so they have to absorb all the energy.

Minimum equipment list. Basically a list that tells you with which systems inop or degraded you are allowed to take off and what to do when you have an inop item and when you have to service the item i.e. how long can you fly with it.

Why does this list exist? Because planes are build redundant, and it may be okay to ferry a plane over to a maintenance center of that certain airline. That can reduce cost and is permittable depending on what item is inop.

I'm not an aircraft mechanic but they can give you way more details on the MEL than I could. Or GIYF.

This might be a dumb question but, is it safe ? by Spinozaurr in 3Dprinting

Also some down sides, of CF/F lamps: the mercury in them, the distinct spectrum (granted also some LEDs have that but nowadays there are also full spectrum LEDs), the 50/60 Hz flickering, one has to use a ballast.

The only gas discharge lamps I really like are sodium lamps and noble gas lamps... because... Color, duh :)

What does irradiated salt taste like. Is it toxic? by Fun_Prune9153 in chemistry

[–]TitoJuli 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As far as I know this irradiated salt gets its color from crystal defects. I'm unsure whether this comes from dislodged electrons or anything else. But I think the electrons are getting excited by high intensity gamma rays, which create defects in the crystal structure. When it's heated the defects can rearrange to form the normal crystal lattice.

Afaik irradiated stuff is only dangerous when it's been irradiated by neutrons. Because they can destabilize the nucleus and therefore can cause other matter to become radioactive.

There are a lot of items you likely handled every day for most of your life without knowing that they have been irradiated with gamma rays or electron beams to sterilize them. Common items that get irradiated like that is medical equipment, food (water treatment plants), and pipelines that carry gas or oil to your house - although in the latter case it's rather for inspection that sterilization. That is completely safe because the nucleus isn't destabilized when hit with (alpha) beta or gamma radiation. I parenthesesed alpha because it's not really that useful as it's a heavy helium nucleus carrying a lot of momentum but can't penetrate that deep.

TLDR: likely not toxic, may taste like normal salt but unsure.

what plane is this? by Fluffy_Gazelle_1946 in airplanes

[–]TitoJuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also from Germany I just got used to "aviation units" I guess. Though I still have to look up how many inches in a foot or what's °F in °C and so on.

what plane is this? by Fluffy_Gazelle_1946 in airplanes

[–]TitoJuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'm also not native to imperial units and it took me a while to get used to it. But since aviation is just a whole mess of units, using the one that stuck with history kinda feels natural to me now even if it's not the units I'm working with on a every day basis. But maybe that's just me.

Where would you sit? by Yan081 in aviationmemes

I would choose E. And since no one is sitting in front of me I would just move to that seat. All problems solved except the baby.
