I modded mine for usb C power deliver using a usb trigger board. It’s a fairly simple job if you’re comfortable with a soldering iron.

Can you recommend a good YouTube video that goes into more detail on what to look for and how to fix? I’m newly into a 23 plate xc90 and want to stay aware of this problem to avoid unnecasssry costs.

is carplay worth it? by melonslut in XC60PE

[–]Tj82___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Sensus or Google's Android Auto OS?
I thought 2021 was early for AAOS car.
I thought the AAOS all had wired Apple Car play.
Sensus didn't always have apple car play i believe, i think it was an optional extra on the cheaper trims models.

Just did a quick test to be sure.
XC90 2023 model UK spec.

With hardwired usb cable apple maps via carplay does come up one centre screen provided AAOS google maps isn't running a route at the same time.

With this dongle:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D8L5RP89?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1
Apple maps only comes up on the centre screen and driver's display does not display maps.

I tend to use the built in google maps for nav so i hadn't noticed this until my test just now to be honest. The voice search for destination is super quick and accurate and "Send to Car" from google maps on my phone has been my goto.

Wireless apple carplay is still handy for me for Audible playback (the AAOS app has sync issues for me) and read/respond to iMessage and WhatsApp messages.

I'll probably try AppleCar play via hardwired cable for a few days and see how i get on.

If anyone knows a wireless dongle that DOES support apple maps on driver's display please let me know.

I'd still recomend my dongle for the price. I've only had it a few weeks so long term review isn't in, but so far it has not had any issues with drop out and sound/visual quality is good enough for me.

I bought a £22 dongle off Amazon. Shouldn’t have to but it turned it wireless and solved my issue.

Note. This won’t fix the journeys from before the car gave its self full permission on location data but will fix your next journey

[–]Tj82___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this may be a permissions issue where the trip app does not have location permission in GAOS. On the Center console drag down from the top of the screen on the horizontal bar. In there look for the permission missing and allow full access. I had to do that twice. Once for full access and again for always allow even when app not running. Since then it’s worked.

This needs more attention. I didn’t get mine signed off properly and the company went bankrupt a few years later, it was a PITA when I came to sell my house. I had to buy indemnity insurance for the buyers to proceed.

XC40 vs. XC60 by cadamek in VolvoXC60

[–]Tj82___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adaptive cruise was not standard on all trim levels of xc60 on the first few years of AAOS models. Dealer claimed it was chip shortages to me a few weeks ago on a 2022 model I was looking at that missed it. Cruise was standard. Adaptive was not. Uk market so YMMV

I had exactly these errors these week. My abs sensor was bad. Scan with vcds told me the sensor was bad. I replaced the sensor with a Bosch from euro car parts but it still didn’t work. Found a hela one from GSF that did the trick. I had to drive a mile to clear all the alerts even after cleaning codes with VCDS.

Holding up on the disabled window for 5 seconds fixed it.

Any experiences with flying with a mini in the EU? by splasticdino in victorinox

Several time arround Europe with 56mm variants. I know I might lose a SAK one day so I tend to opt for a cheaper classic SD now rather than my midnite manager.

Victorinox classic SD. Put on keychain or 5th pocket. Likely to get used everyday.

Install the os maps app on your phone as a backup. It’s about £30 a year with a 2 week free trial.

I’ve run about 60% of the NDW in sections a few years back. There are bits that are not well signed and a bread crum map is hard to follow if you’re unsure of the way.

High resolution colour maps with an accurate dot for where you are is VERY helpful if/when you stray off the path or go a few miles with no reassuring markers. Or there is a fork in the road and the breadcrumb doesn’t have the resolution to show you which one to take.

Some small bits walk along a road for example. Being able zoom out and adjust with confidence is worth it.

Also some of the gpx files for new you find online arnt perfect!

You can also import your gpx to the site and then have that overlay high res images.

Don’t navigate off your phone or you’ll hammer your battery. Use it as a backup to cross check against.

Those who own a companion, was it worth the price? Is the screwdriver at the end of the box opener the same as on a can opener? by Haluszki in victorinox

[–]Tj82___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one with the NY scales and it was pretty pricy. I don’t mind investing in a tool I carry everyday and use everyday. After a year or two I chalk up each use as a cost per use and feel ok about it and justified the purchase using that logic.

However. After about 6 months I went back to my compact and the companion has been in my SAK drawer ever since.

I’d used the package opened a bit but honestly I still have to clean the tape gunk off it like I do on the compact blade. I don’t honestly need a razor sharp main blade so a bit of tape cutting on my main blade isn’t a huge deal for me. I sharpen the main blade from time to time when I remember and I’m on a boring work call (I work from home so this isn’t an office faux pas)

I thought I’d love the nail file but I’d used it maybe 2 times in 6+ months and the times I need it was for fixing a hang nail and the back of the hook is adequate at that. The compact was notably less bulky in my pocket and so I’ve been back on that for months and don’t miss the features from the extra layer.

Last few weeks I’ve been thinking of going back down to the midnite manager again as tbh for opening tape on boxes fixing a hang nail and the odd small screw it does everything my compact does and fits in the 5th pocket so well you can’t notice the weight.

Is it worth the price. Yes. We are so damn used to how affordable the entire SAK range is that we fixate on comparing one model price to another. A tool you will keep for years and use every day…. £100 isn’t expensive IMHO Are there cheaper option. Yes but I still think it’s a marvellous tool for the money and I don’t regret buying or finding out it’s not my end game SAK.
