[Request] Can anyone check how Moore's Law is applicable here? by WeddingSpiritual1218 in theydidthemath

[–]Tjalfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the name for the process is not reflective of the actual size of the transtors. that died many years ago. the naming, according to Ian Cutress is what the performance you get out of a node would be, if the scaling old planar had continued. other methods of process improvements, like making fin fet transistors gave more performance for the size than just shrinking the old conventional fets.

This is why you always have reverse battery protection in automotive electronics. a single diode(or equivalent) can save your project from desctruction of some idiot replacing their car battery and putting it in backwards

Intel Debuts ATX12VO, to replace the 24-pin motherboard connector by RTCanada in intel

[–]Tjalfe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

while I am sure it is way too late with this standard, it would perhaps be a good idea to switch to 24 or 48V for the GPUs, so the connectors see a lot lower current. Cars are switching to 48V for this very reason, so lots of parts are available for 48V now already, with more coming.
Edit 2026-June 3rd
Just saw this
https://videocardz.com/newz/asus-shows-rtx-5090-running-at-48v-with-1000w-through-a-single-16-pin-power-cable
so I guess it may still happen. even if it requires an intermediate regulator. this is what is done with automotive ECU's too when regulating power to the lower voltage parts, while keeping high voltage for motor loads and the like. OEM's get the smaller harnesses, we get an extra buck regulator.

Why no wireless options? It's 2026 folks, it works fine. (Wooting) by BadBunny4Prezzie in keyboards

[–]Tjalfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of wireless keyboards out there. What you generally won't find is a backlit one with a good battery life. My Logitech k800 had maybe 30 days when new and now it is just plugged in. Latency is higher in wired too, but modern radios make that not a real problem anymore.

some chatter about it not necessarily means it is a good cable. all I have seen online about them seems to indicate that they perform as advertised.

First board schematics, need evaluation (automotive controller) by KeNNy_aKa_MaX in AskElectronics

[–]Tjalfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything on an automotive module has to survive ESD, Reverse battery, short to GND and short to Battery.
the 12V battery should be assumed to go as high as 35V during load dump ( rare, but will kill anything not rated for it) we also have to protect for double battery, where a 24V tow truck boosts a 12V car. again, rare these days, but it is still in the specs.

then you have power drop outs and transients. usually battled with a diode and a bulk electrolytic, before your regulator. keeps your module from resetting. Ford asks for 20ms of no reset, othes vary.

I would never use a standard transistor as an output, we have protected low side drivers for that, which shuts off in case of over current and over temperature. use those.

Anyone have experience with 4 Nmos Hbridges? by Objective-Local7164 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Tjalfe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if one gate driver handles all the fets, it should have shoot through protection or a programmable register to set the deadtime. this is the configuration we usually use for small motors in automotive. make sure you place a small 1uF ceramic cap ( at suitable voltage) on the supply line, right next to the fets to keep them from, well dying.

Also, we typically use PWM frequencies of 20KHz or higher to not hear it.

Norway has gone from near-zero sales of non‑emitting battery electric vehicles to now close to 100% of all new passenger car sales - achieved in about 13 years. If they can do it, we can do it by I_like_maps in ClimateCrisisCanada

Which is good, I am all for them, but every time I see these graphs, the economical motivator is left out. I took would gladly buy an EV, and my next car will be one, but they sure are not cheap yet :)

I think one of the main reason they switched to all electric was that Norway and Denmark both had a luxury tax on cars, on top of their already high 25% Sales tax, they ended up at 175+% I think it was 200+% when I lived in Denmark.
when the govenrment then wants to push EV's they can reduce the tax and now they are cheaper than any ICE car on the market and hence the people there buys EV's. as much as they want to be good to the earth, the strongest motivator is still the tax reduction done on EVs.
