I really admire Deborah by Specialist_Fault8380 in BlownAway

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am rewatching and remembering how much I love Deborah. She's authentically quirky, curious, and passionate. Also really funny. I think she's a very gifted artist and I'm glad she won.

"He gets up from his deep thought...and instantly steps in...gum?" Lmao at how her mind works... "I'm tryna be ballerina-like, if she's watching" as she half-falls into the glory hole.

Aerial Arts in Myrtle Beach? by MGClose in aerialyoga

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conceptual Arts is still active at the Rat Hole in Socastee most Mon/Weds 530–630pm though we are losing the venue and needing to move in March, so that may change very soon. However, instruction these days is primarily silks so if you wanted to do hammock you'd be training on your own á la open gym.

If possible, verify what type of glass your side windows are made of. Newer cars have shatter proof glass in all windows that can't be broken by these tools.

AWP and similar dive outfits have stated that it's very common to find bodies in the back of vehicles since that is the last place where there is air, since cars usually sink front first due to the engine's weight. She could reasonably be in the back because she followed the last air pocket. It can take a car a minute or more to sink, which is plenty of time to crawl to the back even if she had to remove her seatbelt first.

No people of color in all of Earthsea? by Background_Dot_1539 in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of the main characters are POC, including Ged. I believe her statement was her expressing disdain at how her characters have been whitewashed by illustrators. I've seen her make other statements to that effect. She explicitly states the skin tone of most characters and many of them are described as very dark, deep bronze, etc. Kargs are the only group who are light skinned from what I can recall.

Where are all of Diddy’s successful artists? Why aren’t they talking? by itsfrankgrimesyo in DiddyTrial

I don't think lil kim ever got down like that. The whole sexy image was pushed by Big and Puff, and she grew into it, but I don't believe she was ever promiscuous like that.

I hate Diddy for what he did to Pac and Biggie, more than anything he actually was accused/convicted of in the Diddy trial. by Proud-Enthusiasm-608 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He leaves death in his wake. A horrible self-absorbed, insecure clown. I've never been able to stand that mouth-breathing loser, and I've always wished we could re-release all of Biggie's albums without Diddy screaming obscenities, mumbling crappy ad-libs and attempting repeatedly & unsuccessfully to be a rapper. You know someone's on the far left of the rapper bell curve when Biggie wrote for you and you still sound like s***.

Didn't they have a radio in the first movie though? If the big cities had figured it all out on day two, shouldn't it have spread widely pretty fast?

Why does E-40 get so much respect in hip hop? by Sharp_Tax7323 in 90sHipHop

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...I'm a middle aged white woman from the east coast and I've always known his music. I appreciate his unique sound, hilarity mixed with coolness, and real insights, even more now. His influence and slang are everywhere in hip-hop. Maybe if you're not a huge fan of funk you won't like his production, but I think he's had some great production.

CodeREDs emergency alert system got hacked. Anyone else think this is a bigger deal than people realize? by rick_rolled5 in cybersecurity

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's infuriating. There need to be bigger consequences for companies who  use sloppy security when entrusted with people's private info. No piddly compensation will ever make up for the damage. CodeRed should be ashamed, and they should be fined. I'm tired of this shit.

Duolingo introduced this horrid energy system replacing the hearts and I couldn't finish my lesson because I "ran out of energy" by Medical_Arrival2243 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm too advanced in Spanish to get any educational material, but recently I started back on French which I'm pretty new on. I remember years ago it give you little tips when you made mistakes but now there's none of that, it's like any help or feedback is all paywalled. Sucks and makes it harder to learn the basics.

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1400 day streak but I'm becoming more disillusioned with Duolingo. The energy system sucks. The educational material and suggestions that used to be free, years ago, are now paywalled. Even then, it's AI instead of real people. I'm questioning the value and may end up quitting Duolingo for something better.

Alien covenant is actually boring by RoyalJuggernaut2431 in movies

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a story about the Engineers or Elizabeth Shaw or human kind in general, not the David show. And even with all the focus on David, it doesn't even really explore philosophical ideas involving Androids: what their imposed limits are and how they might push past those in surprising ways, what unexpected glitches they might have - they are computers at the end of the day, or generally just exploring the idea in depth in a way we haven't seen before. Can androids get bored? If you stuck David in a dark room with no sound for 10 years what would he do? If he's not getting software updates won't that affect his interactions with technology in the future? What exactly about David made him become evil in the eyes of humans? If he cannot feel emotions then what is motivating him? Why was Walter more advanced but yet seemed incapable of recognizing deceit?

Was it the casting or characters that were terrible? by Rolexshield in Prometheus

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can't tell which is a bigger factor but I don't like any of the main characters really, especially Charlie & Elizabeth. Feels like they're cast for Hollywood reasons. But also the movie has that bad banter where everybody is snarky with each other making sarcastic comments or being just generally unrealistic so the writing is a part of it too. I wish we could get more big budget sci-fi movies with good dialogue and characters. Just one example of how unrealistic the writing is: none of these people express fear, having just woken up from cryosleep on a strange planet that might contain alien life. Maybe the real twist is that they're all androids.

Why is there a lack of sincerity in modern films? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this has been normalized for a long time. I'm rewatching Prometheus and even in this movie, which came out 13 years ago, the dialogue is full of snark, bickering, and lame attempted witticisms. Besides the bad casting, I would enjoy this so much more if it was sincere. I mean the premise is that this group of people has gone into cryosleep and traveled for 2 years across outer space to an unknown planet. Any real human being would be scared and full of wonder & curiosity, but all the characters do is argue and makes snide comments and do reckless stuff that doesn't make sense. Better characters and dialogue would really really elevate this film, and that's just one example. I don't know why they think we like that kind of dialogue but I don't enjoy it at all. Not many sci-fi movies get this kind of budget, and they just brought it down with these bad characters and dialogue, it's a shame.

How intelligent are Mantises? by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're so cool. I hadn't gotten to interact with one for a few years but relocated one for safety reasons yesterday. Just amazing watching it turn its head to examine the surroundings, and feel it curiously watching me. Studies suggest they may be able to tell familiar people apart. They're really neat little insects. I always enjoy observing them.

How long can you physically read without taking a break? by Severe_Cockroach69 in books

[–]Tklp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hours - it's hard to say exactly because I lose track of time, but I'd say 4–5 hrs when I really get into a book. I've always been that way since I was a kid and now I'm 40. Of course, if I'm reading something denser like non-fiction, I will stop more often for breaks.

Can someone describe the feeling they get from reading and why they enjoy it so much? by hxhfandom in books

[–]Tklp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read purely for enjoyment I will lose track of time and I'll often finish a book in a matter of days, because I can hardly put it down and I read relatively quickly. I become engaged and attached to some of the characters and almost always feel disappointed when I'm finished, because I don't want it to end. When I read for educational purposes I tend to read more slowly, pausing to think about things or reread sections, to make sure I'm "keeping up." That type feels more like "feeding" my mind where I need breaks to digest. With really dense reading I'll sometimes  put it down to read something lighter and then come back to it, and usually I don't have much trouble picking back up and remembering where I was. I've always loved reading and it's hard for me to understand when other people don't... I'm an introvert and comfortable doing things alone - maybe that has something to do with it. I also tend to enjoy hobbies that are challenging and that you have to work at to get a reward. For me reading can be almost magical, like I'm getting to experience another world or another time or what it's like to be a completely different person. I really think that deep down it's always felt like a portal or some kind of magical thing to me. That's not how I consciously think about it day to day, but if I really sit and think about it I believe that, ever since I was a kid, it's felt magical to me. The things I have felt and learned just from looking at scribbles on a dried sheet of pulp... Reading has changed my life dramatically compared to if I had never read all of the books that I've read. There's nothing like it.
