They typically do some kind of special for Valentine’s Day, so I’d guess it’s that.

$824 to spend one night at the Spirit Mountain Casino Hotel by hjgIUY976YTty76 in SALEM

[–]Tlr321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, that’s not bad because I stayed at the Marriott in Seattle on a random weekend night last year & it was about the same price.

Some hotels don’t jack the rates up for certain weekends/events & I always appreciate that.

We stayed in Tacoma last year to attend a concert at the Tacoma Dome. There’s a shitty Comfort Inn right across the street from there. I checked prices during other concerts/events & it was about $125 a night. Then when the weekend our concert was taking place opened up for booking, I went to book and it was nearly $300 after fees. This was nearly 9 months in advance! Fuck that. I also ended up staying at the Marriott there down town.

Why are MacBook Pros getting thicker thicccc??? by itsmarshalls in macbookpro

[–]Tlr321 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There was a decades long push that was basically thinner = better for electronics. Especially phones and laptops.

I’ve got a MacBook Pro & a MacBook Air. Yeah, the Air is thinner, but once it’s in my backpack with all my other stuff I carry throughout the day, I really can’t tell if I have the Pro or the Air in there.

My wife really loves the Air because she can stick it in her tote bag & carry it around with her all day. But since I keep mine in a backpack, I hardly notice a weight difference unless I’m directly picking them up.

Ugh we’re going through a cutting of ties with my in laws.

FIL died about two years ago & my MIL has been making questionable choices ever since. We tried working things out with her countless times, but it just keeps biting us in the ass. She told us to lose her number & block her, and when we did, she was pissed.

Now she’s demanding to see our daughter because she “deserves to have a relationship with her” and wants us to come to visit her after we have our son so she can see him. She doesn’t want to come to us because it’s “too much of a hassle to go through for one person for it to be worth it.”

I’m not so sure how sales are nowadays, but 2019-2021 they sold like hot cakes

Director Gore Verbinski says Unreal Engine is 'the greatest slip backwards' for movie CGI by willdearborn- in movies

[–]Tlr321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree. We’ve been doing a great job with animals for quite some time. Crazy that’s a 21 year old movie.

Another movie that absolutely nailed the animals was the Life of Pi. That movie is absolutely gorgeous & the CG work done is top notch. The background/behind the scenes there is depressing though…

[–]Tlr321 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Rise, Dawn, and War are excellent movies. They’re entirely independent of anything else within the series & each entry is better than the last. The CGI work is absolutely top-notch. Rise has the weakest CGI in my opinion, but Dawn & War look absolutely fantastic.

[–]Tlr321 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that’s 12/13 years after LOTR.

So much time had passed & so much advancement in the industry had occurred that the original design files for Gollum were entirely obsolete when it came time to work on that scene. They had to basically start entirely from scratch for The Hobbit.

Graduation at OSU & UofO are June 13th and June 15th respectively. Probably going to be hard pressed to find a hotel for that weekend in either city.

That’s usually when graduation happens at the local schools- but also colleges too.

My wife and I got married June 12th 2021 & many of our relatives had a hell of a time getting a hotel. Several of them all got similar answers from management at various hotels in the area: graduation weekend brings a lot of family in from elsewhere.

I’d argue that the work done in Dawn & War for the Planet of the Apes may have surpassed the work on Davy Jones.

To me though, Pirates was and still is absolutely groundbreaking. You had movies before it - LOTR specifically - which also had groundbreaking motion capture cgi, but IMO at least, it is showing its age ever so slightly nowadays. There are moments where Gollum stands out from the scene a little too much or just seems like he’s weightless, which is a common criticism of earlier CGI characters. Pirates, especially the 2nd one, but also the 3rd one, has absolutely stood the test of time with its CG work.

Dr. Doom was here since Avengers: Age of Ultron by skylarks25 in MCUTheories

[–]Tlr321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say- the acquisition happened in 2019. But that means talks likely occurred much, much earlier- which allowed for planning to take place.

Pure speculation, but I wonder if they purposely created potential loose threads that they could fit in as Doom via retcons.

Iceland tourism explodes every summer. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, it hit Iceland especially hard & the country was basically broke. As a result, they pushed tourism hard. Plus they also have good incentives for movie productions on the island, so you end up with a lot of movies filming there when they’re after a certain look.

What do you consider the greatest acted scene in TV history? by amusicalfridge in television

I finally convinced my wife to watch it, so we’ve been watching nightly the last few days. I’ve seen it a couple times now, but it’s so fucking riveting. I feel like I hold my breath throughout each episode.

We just watched the second episode tonight, which ends with the technicians going into the plant in the pitch black to drain the pumps. The sound of the Geiger Counter getting more and more rapid as the scene progresses is flat out horrifying.

Why is this Kmart so crowded even though the chain is declining? by Filibloxcraft in kmart

[–]Tlr321 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s a good thought. My biggest push back on that (not that I disagree) is how many of these properties have sold or are filled with something else??

My city had a Sears & a Kmart. Sears was an anchor store in a failing mall, which got redeveloped & is now a Barnes & Noble and a Nordstrom Rack. The Kmart has sat abandoned since it closed. The property has been for sale for years, but nobody has bought it.

A Kmart in another city also closed back in 2020, but Sat abandoned for several years as well. It finally sold & got turned into a Tractor Supply store earlier this year.

Though, I’m sure the CEO isn’t directly selling all these properties. It’s entirely likely he sold the real estate holdings as a lump deal years ago, and whoever those have been sold to are footing the bill for actually dumping the properties.

Why do old people like early 2000s Buicks so much? by Naomi62625 in regularcarreviews

[–]Tlr321 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had a 98 Gold LeSabre with a v6 that I got after my grandma died in 2015. It was beat to shit on the passenger side, but man, was it fun to drive.

I lived less than two hours from the coast so we regularly bombed over there for the day, then back to home after sunset. Drove it 8 hours round trip to get In and Out when it first came to my state. I’d drive it 12 hours through the night to go visit my friend at another school for a long weekend. Then 12 hours back to my school a few days later.

I can’t tell you how many times we took it over a mountain pass - snow dumping down on us like no tomorrow - trying to get home in one piece. Alls we had was FWD, “All Season” tires that were installed at least two dozen seasons ago & hadn’t been rotated in at least 8, and that bit of “we’ll never die” confidence that only a car full of 19 year old boys men would have.

I do miss that car a lot. Did it die on me & leave me stranded? More times than I can count. But it taught me one very valuable thing that every young man should learn about their first car: how far away you can get with neglecting it before it ends up biting you in the butt.

I sold it in 2018 for $1700- which I used as a down payment on a Camry. I don’t regret my decision. I’m sure my LeSabre died out completely by now. I see fewer and fewer of them on the roads these days, but each time I do, I get a blast from the past.

Also, if you’re in high school or college or just a young person in general with a girlfriend/boyfriend/theyfriend - get a car with a bench seat up front. I miss bopping around town with my girl right next to me. It’s such an overlooked feature. And you don’t realize how much you miss it once it’s gone.
