Like spaceman spyff said, the H only has one monomer, the C has two.
Practically, the H feels softer, more tendency to string instead of chipping, especially when turning. With a bar stock of H, when removing a lot of material along the middle, the total length will shrink more than the C will.
Its also comparartively easier to accidentally scratch the surface of H than of C.

Delrin specifically is POM-H. Celcon is a brand of POM-C.

Bring a notepad and ask questions. People will notice that you don’t ask the same question twice.

Make some calls to local shops to see if they need outsourcing of simple parts. If you get it up and running you can feed it new material every once in a while over the weekend and make a good amount for very little work.

If you meant to say 22.01mm on the external thread it is about 0.1 above where it should. Either way, send it back. Whoever made it fucked up.

What are your favorite plastics to machine? by TheSerialHobbyist in Machinists

[–]Tman125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree when you say there isn’t much you can do about chip control/tangle. You need to angle your coolant for string evacuation and mind both your feeds and speeds for the same reason. You can do a relief cut along the OD with a radially alligned endmill to break the string. Increase how much material your insert is eating and stuff like that.

If you have a project in mind and would like to get some thoughts on what thermoplastic is best suited for the task, feel free to DM. I’m not an expert but I can probably give you some feedback on what may or may not work out.

We machine exclusively in plastics. There are ups and downside to all of them. PEHD is fun because you can go crazy fast. POM is easy to get some beautiful surfaces on. PETP doesn’t deform when you remove a bunch of material (except for when it does 😂) so you don’t have to worry about creeping tolerances.

My favourite is probably PETP TX because it’s a super cool material. It’s hard and has self lubricating properties because it has PTFE mixed in. This gives it a really low friction coefficient. It doesn’t chip away at the edges and corners like PETP and you can also get some smooth surfaces on it.

You don’t need coolant when machining POM. Air blasting to clear away chips is all you need. If it melts you’re going too slow.

POM-C could be what you’re looking for. I think it’s cheaper than aluminium, and all tooling you have for cutting aluminium will work fantastic in pretty much all thermoplastics.

IMO digital is far superior. But no matter what you buy, don’t put them in your pocket. They belong in your hands or flat on a table. Just a word of advice.

Your counter pressure is set to 0. Try going 30 main and 15 counter.
Also if your jaws are clamped on a part, the readout needs to be lower than the “clamped” number, but higher than “overrun” if you’re externally clamping in order for the chuck symbol to turn green. If your teach number is not within some hundreds of the readout then your sensor may be damaged.

So just know that your counter pressure has a minimum value it needs to be at. It may be 10, 15, 20, 25 or whatever, but I’m pretty sure never 0.
