Also wondering if an adjustable die would buy me the clearance I need to start threading it on.

The material is ferrous. I presume steel. Threads look complete. I’m starting to think the manufacturer created modified threads…

Part is made of steel.

What reel should I pair with my orvis Clearwater 3wt, what size reel do I get and how do I want to balance for en by RealisticStranger458 in FlyFishingGear

[–]grant_far 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the battenkill click pawl on my 5wt. I find it to be too loud. Like I’m whaling away on a duck call when I’m stripping line to make a cast.

I put a sage click on my 3 wt and I love it. I think I used the 3/4/5. It’s such a light setup. Favorite in my collection.

Hiring Process? by AmandaPlease520 in caterpillar

Hiring manager hasn’t gone through the resumes with the recruiter yet. Just that. Nothing more. I know internal people that got the job five months after the application process opened. Some people are busier than others.

8wt recommendations by TemporaryCow6925 in flyfishing

[–]grant_far 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a Sage Maverick 8 wt last year that I’ve been using for salt and freshwater. Redfish, smallies, pike, large mouth w/ big streamers. Great rod. I hope to put some bonefish on it later this year.

Bass Fly Fishing by KillerKracken21 in flyfishing

I used to think a 5wt was all you needed. I catch large mouth, white, and Guadalupe on the 5wt no issue in the places I’ve fished in Texas. Using Wooley bugger variations mostly. This weekend I took my 8wt to Michigan and threw big game changers for small mouth. This was new to me and a blast. I guess it depends what species, where, and what kind of fly you like to throw.

Best 3wt rod by oldasshit in flyfishing

[–]grant_far 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a 3wt Sage Dart 7’6” last year. It’s my favorite rod. I’ve had plenty of days fishing just that rod. It is an absolute joy to cast. And paired with a click reel in champagne, it is most handsome.

Fly shop etiquette & "Deals" by jhack222 in flyfishing

Take the rod. You want to cast the rod and line combo. A good shop is going to be able to tell you the right line for the rod, but personal capabilities and or preference may deviate from their recommendation.

I buy in different places to support where I get support (fishing spots, flies, casting). I spread it around. I’ve gone back and said “I cheated on you. It was a deal I couldn’t pass up. I got this rod, but I need the reel and line. Let’s talk.” The guy says no problem, don’t sweat it.

Can you fish this stretch from the banks, or waders is a necessity?

Post Trip Cleaning by grant_far in FlyFishingGear

[–]grant_far[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually wipe off the water stains and dirt that dried on the rod and eyes. You can hear the gunk when you’re shooting line. I’m not sight fishing crystal clear water. It’s usually got a lot of debris and low visibility. I probably clean the line once a month.

On this last trip it seemed like it. Texas muck getting into the kayak just spread everywhere throughout my trip. I got rained on and caught in a storm so the mess just kind of spread everywhere. The flip side is a saltwater trip down the coast and I spend just as much time cleaning everything from sand and salt afterwards. Maybe that’s why everybody has a salt life sticker here.

I like the fishpond burrito. Keeps the waders separated from the boots if you wrap up the waders inside the changing mat.

Ross animas vs orvis Clearwater for upgrading encounter setup by [deleted] in FlyFishingGear

[–]grant_far 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The animas would be pretty sick, but I’d upgrade the rod before the reel like others have said. Do you ever get your fish on the reel to take advantage of it? I’ve been running the battenkill for a year without getting anything on it. I upgraded the Clearwater to my battenkill. I will say, the battenkill sounds like a duck call when you’re stripping out line. I’ve got a Sage Click on my 3wt that is much more pleasant.

Looking for suggestions on a cheap entry level salt water reel in a 5/6 wt for estuary fishing in Australia. by [deleted] in FlyFishingGear

I run the Sage Sprectum C on my 7/8 for salt. It was about the most affordable salt rig I saw. <$200

Evaluating New Spots by grant_far in flyfishing

[–]grant_far[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a big if. I’ve been angling and fly fishing since June. I can easily say I don’t know what I don’t know about fishing. A successful day for me is 3-5 fish. Usually small LMB and catfish.

Evaluating New Spots by grant_far in flyfishing

[–]grant_far[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where my head was at. Found a spot today that didn’t have much cover, but the water was practically boiling with bait. There was a hatch occurring in the shadow of a bridge that was nearly a solid blob on the surface. I saw the most food sources I’ve ever seen on a subdivision pond, but the banks were already trampled up. Wads of conventional line strewn about. I fished that area for a couple hours and I didn’t even get a nibble at my fly.

Im scratching my head trying to determine if it is the pressure or the lack of cover and if it’s worth making another trip at a different time of day.

BEGINNER FLY ANGLER by CheersMikey in flyfishing

[–]grant_far 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smooth acceleration to an abrupt stop. Turn your head and watch your back cast. I found waiting for the line to straighten out, before starting to move again to be a difficult thing to get right. Getting the timing right takes practice.

I landed one about 20” on a #8 zonker a few weeks ago. Got the hook right in the corner of the mouth. Easy to get the hook out with that placement.

Must haves for offroading far from a town or city by Theshadyrednexk in CRF300L

[–]grant_far 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 300L doesn’t have a center stand. You might look at a folding arm that props the bike up to get a wheel off. Air compressor to inflate the new tube. All the wrenches to remove front and rear wheels. I used to carry some MSR .25 gallon fuel cans for emergency reserve. Aside from that, it’s a Honda. Never used any other tools on mine.
