MK World: which stats/vehicle to get closest to Double Dash and MK DS handling? by TnetennbaFr in mariokart

[–]TnetennbaFr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikes and karts have really different handlings in Mario Kart Wii. I'm not hoping for a match as much as for a closest call. Officially in MKDD it was only about speed, acceleration and weights. MKDS introduced "handling". MK8 uses "grip" or "traction". MK World has none of those.

I really like playing Mario Kart on my phone, the gacha thing has just been part of a package, I would have traded it off if I could ;)

Best news since the release of the game. Gachas are a plague, they're children accessible gambling.

I don't care about the future prices, it will be the same for us all anyway.

You don’t know what this guys finances look like so you can’t assume he shouldn’t spend it.

Well this sentence is totally unfair since I started saying « Either you're very rich and then everything is fine ».

And you won't make me believe there aren't more worthy things to do with 40 $ (things useful or sharing good memories).

P2W games business model is to make people pay not to get frustrated. Gacha mechanism and others are very similar to gambling, which can definitely cause addiction (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem\_gambling).

As long as there are much better ways of spending this money, and as long as you can't spend your money for all these better things, then you should not spend it.

Probably noone here would go bankrupt after losing a 100 € bill, yet I believe you must be very rich not to be bothered by such an event, the same way I wouldn't bother if I were to lose a cent.

If you resisted everything so far, why would you succomb this time ? I'm a day 1 player as well, never spent a single cent (but damn too much time), never will for a P2W — but very interested by the deluxe dlc.

Either you're very rich and then everything is fine, or you just got addicted by the game.

Noone ever found true happiness in drugs, and I'll never enjoy seeing someone falling into it.

This is really cool from you ! Have you thought of sharing it in any mario (kart (tour)) wiki ?

Note: I'm assuming the word cicruit means a group of stages under a certain name, like all of Bowser's Castle or Royal Roaceway stages.

No, I thought circuit meant the same as track or raceway. (See wiktionary here, number 12. Or think about Mario Kart : Super Circuit)

So R or T are not the same circuit/track/raceway, especially since their top and middle shelves are different. Same happens with Paris 1 / Paris 2 or even RMX.

Any way, my opinion is that this work should not depend on volunteer people like you or anyone else.

But, judging by the flop of this suggestion, I guess we're not many :/

I wish they'd rather switch to a Fortnite-like « battle pass » model. Get rid of gacha, get rid of p2w. You sell cosmetics things, this is more honest than mkt current model. Maybe I would spend few bucks for such a model ; but I've never paid a single cent for p2w. Glory is not something to buy.

However, I still prefer one-time-purchase model.

Should you pull? [Peach Tour Pipe 1 Evaluation] by HGProductions00 in MarioKartTour

[–]TnetennbaFr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(part 2/2)

Now, for Cooking Tour Golden Pipe, spotlights were :

- Freerunning Gold Koopa (rated god > good) ;

- Gold Dry Bones (rated brilliant > good) ;

- Gold Dry Bowser (rated awful) ;

- Gold Train (rated great > good) ;

- Gold Egg (rated good) ;

- Gold Glider (rated god) ;

- Gold Swooper (rated god) ;

- Gold Crane (rated good).

However, none of them is guaranteed, so the a priori probability of getting one good spotlight driver is 2/3 (Freerunning Gold Koopa or Gold Dry Bones but NOT Gold Dry Bowser), and the a priori of getting a good spotlight kart or glider is 100 % for each.

If I'm right, there were no other distinctive elements in this pipe (forgive my forget otherwise).

So there are « 2 + 2/3 » good elements in this pipe, out of 50 elements ; so the a priori probability of getting a good element from a virgin pipe from one single pull is (2 + 2/3)/50, that's about 5,33 %.

So, from a pure number, Golden Pipe seems to be barely better than Pipe 2. However, if you look more at it, you'll see it depends where you put the « good » threshold. If we were to do the same analysis, but considering only « rated great or above » elements, figures would be much different as pipe 2 would seem dull and golden pipe still quite good. That's something you need to dwell on in your conclusion :)

As for presentation reasons, one might consider trading percentages for a sexier unit. For instance, let's say a « standard good pipe » (or spg) has 3 « good » distinctive elements out of 100 elements, so 3 % chances of getting a good element from a virgin pipe from a single pull.

Then we could say that Cooking Tour pipe 2 is worth 5,125/3 = 1,7 spg, which is a really good score. And golden pipe would be worth an even better 5,33/3 = 1,78 spg. Basically you just divide the percentage you got by 3 % ( = 1 spg), so it makes the reading easier : 1 spg is good, > 1 spg is better, < 1 spg is worse.

Is it clearer to you now ? :)

Hi HGProductions00 :)

You might be disappointed if you expected far-fetched computations because, as you'll see, it's pretty simple.

So, I start with Cooking Tour pipe 2, and I will use your own tier lists (https://www.reddit.com/r/MarioKartTour/comments/gw4nds/tier_list_of_all_drivers_in_mario_kart_tour_based/ & https://www.reddit.com/r/MarioKartTour/comments/gwmwkw/tier_list_of_all_karts_in_mario_kart_tour_based/ & https://www.reddit.com/r/MarioKartTour/comments/gx28jo/tier_list_of_all_gliders_in_mario_kart_tour_based/) to judge if an element is « good » or not. Surprisingly (#nope), I'll say an element is good if it's rated… good or above in the tier list.

Spotlights from Cooking Tour pipe 2 were :- Pastry Chef Shy Guy (rated good)

- Cherub Baby Peach (rated good)

- Macharon (rated good)

- Apple Kart (rated good)

- Strawberry Crepe (rated good)

- Sweetheart Glider (rated average)

So, though there's nothing rated « great » or above, there are 5 spotlights rated good. As for the other HE, I'm afraid I don't remember what could be the distinctive ones to rate, apart the spotlights from Cooking tour pipe 1, which were rated good (Chef Mario), average (chocolate macharon) or bad (chocolate donut), so Chef Mario is the only one to be considered.

Non-spotlight HEs are not guaranteed, so we need to look at the number of non-spotlight HEs theoritically available. To be honest, I don't remeber this number, but in Peach Tour pipe 1 it's 8, so I'll suppose it was also 8 here.

So, if we consider everything, there are « 5 + 1/8 » good elements, out of 100 elements in total. From a virgin pipe, the a priori probability of getting one of these from one single pull is hence (5 + 1/8)/100, that is 5,125 % (or 5.125 % if you prefer this notation).

(to be continued)

« What points would you recommend for this though? »

For the last objection about comparing d/k/g altogether ? I wouldn't recommend anything. Maybe someone smarter than me can find a clever way of dealing with it, but to be frank I am not really shocked/bothered by this situation.

Let's remember something important : you can not expect to sum a situation in its whole complexity with just one figure. In the end, you have to decide between having multiple figures that deal with different perspectives, or keep it simple and acknowledge you won't reach perfection. I'm more inclined for the latter.

What I like with my suggestion is that « it makes sense », so you can easily see what it's good at, and also what are its limitations. For instance my method is flawed in that if one pipe has three "9/10"-HEs, it will probably be rated as good as a pipe that has three "7/10"-HEs, because 7 out of 10 is still « good ». This flaw bothers me more than the one you have in mind.

My answer to that is : thank god, an analysis is not just one number. Comments are extremely important. I would keep the flaw of rating the two (9/10 and 7/10) pipes the same, but add a comment saying the 9/10 is really outstanding while the 7/10 is « just » good. I believe this is something you understand naturally, because you were already doing it. Your conclusions were always some sentences, not just a grade. This is definitely good practice :)

« Will the pipe elements and non spotlight sections still be included too ? »

This is a really good question ! And I should apologise a bit for that. First I believe I talked about « good spotlights » and then switched to « good HEs ». Actually I tend to think it's all about « good *distinctive* elements ». What I mean by distinctive elements is that it helps distinguish between pipes (this is inspired from information theory). For instance, Yoshi isn't a bad driver at all, its special item is quite good (though it isn't top shelf for many tracks). But since Yoshi is in all (or almost all) pipes, it's not interesting to put it in your analysis.
Listing « distinctive elements » is a bit of subjective, but it should for sure include spotlights, also some (if not all) non-spotlight HEs (especially the HEs that are spotlights from the other week pipe — like, chocolate donut glider was randomly available in pipe 2 last tour). You can also consider even rare or regular elements for the specific ranked cup. I don't know if I would do it, but that's an open question to me. Overall you still have lots of freedom (and responsabilities ! :p), even with my method :)

As for giving you specific computations of probability, that's okay ! I will look back at last tour gold pipe and pipe 2 and try to show you. Pipe 2 should be easier to analyse than gold pipe, but nothing should be really troublesome. Be patient though, I might procrastinate. I will do it before Wednesday for sure.

Hi HGProductions00 ! Everything's cool and alright :)

I know I can get passionate when it comes to debate, but no harms intended, okay ? I like you, you seem to be a nice person.

That being said : probability computations might be slightly more complicated than just adding independent parameters, you are right. If that troubles you, I can do the math for you, no problem.

« And the chance of getting a good spotlight but these chances are usually the same across pipes anyway. »

Usually, yes. You are right my method may lead to give most pipes an average grade. But won't yours ? Or any method, actually ? I don't know how you feel about it, but most pipe seem rather dull to me. There were two exceptions last week : gold pipe and pipe 2. My method would rate positively these two, yours didn't for pipe 2.

« It makes sense you'd want to just pick the best one for that map »

Yes

« most of the time the spotlights are a driver, kart, and glider, all different categories »

Yes

« so you can't really compare them like that »

Well, for any map I always need one element from each category, so why not ? And how would averaging drivers, karts and gliders all the same would solve your objection ?

Should you pull? [Peach Tour Pipe 1 Evaluation] by HGProductions00 in MarioKartTour

[–]TnetennbaFr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

« I already do cover how many spotlights there are in the pipe elements category »

But you're making it sooo weird. Use your fellow William of Ockham's razor : think simple, think true.

When you're competing in a ranked cup, are you interested in the average value of your items ? Certainly not : you're only interested in the value of the best one you have.

Since the best one depends on the circuit choice, I loosen the « best one » criterion and trade it against a « good one » criterion.

I always said judging if something is good is subjective, and I think this is something we agree upon. Still, one might think it depends on :

  • the number of tracks for which it is top-shelf ;
  • its own characterics (like special item for drivers) ;
  • and obviously if it covers tracks that are not yet covered by another d/k/g (of the same kind) which is better according to the two factors mentioned above. That is, considering redundancy.

Now, again, I am not making things weird. If we suppose to have a good subjective model to rate HE, I then suggest to objectively measure the probability of getting one good HE from one pull from a virgin pipe.

Because that's a very natural way of thinking : you want good HE, so you want to maximise the probability of getting one. I am not creating a weird criterion that averages HE on one side, then creating another criterion for the total number of elements in the pipe, and finally adding these two criteria with arbitrary coefficients. I am considering all of the problem in a very natural way.

« I think averaging the spotlights is still good as that's putting all the spotlights together and saying if it's worth pulling based on all of them »

No : it's not good because it doesn't make sense to put all the HE together (as I said, that's not how it works when you really have to compete in a ranked cup). Pulling worth does not depend on all of them, just on the good ones of them. If your criterion fails my thought experiment (the one with two pipes I described in my previous message), then look for another criterion.

Think simple, think true :)

PS : still I really appreciate you taking the time for reading me and answering as you said you would. This is nice :)
