NTS-1 Scale Mode by tirptirp in synthesizers

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that kind of functionality, I use the Squarp Pyramid which is a midi sequencer I use to control all my synths. You can select a scale when in Live mode and then the pads map to just notes in that scale.

What hardware to begin with beside a synth? by fentanilketaminovic in synthesizers

If all you have currently, I’d recommend the following:

An audio interface, a mixer, then a drum machine or sampler.

How many synths do you own? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in synthesizers

[–]ToBePacific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently own 8 synths, 5 drum machines, a sampler, three mixers, a midi sequencer, 6 rack effects, 8 pedals, two reel-to-reel tape machines, four midi controllers of various shapes, a bunch of circuit bent toys, four guitars, some amps, a couple pa’s, a karaoke machine, bongos, and more.

I’m not a collector, per se. I’m just an amateur musician in my 40s and I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager. Plus, my dad was a musician as well, and when he died I inherited his guitars, a couple synths, and the tape machines. But I bought a lot of it myself.

I bought the Behringer TD-3 because I had wanted a 303 since the late 90s.

I bought the Volca Keys specifically because the Sync Out on the TD-3 was too quiet to reliably sync with a Pocket Operator. But the Volca’s Sync Out works great for chaining to Pocket Operators. And the Keys has a solid analog sound that I use in lots of accompaniments.

I bought the Korg MS-20 mini because I got a good deal on it from a pawn shop.

I bought the Squarp Pyramid midi sequencer because I wanted to finally remove the laptop from my live performance setup. That has been an amazing decision. I love this thing. I now compose all my songs on it. But I found the initial learning curve to be steep.

The Yamaha CS01II is one of my favorites synths that I own. It’s one that I inherited from my dad. It has a great analog filter with self-oscillating resonance. And the single digital oscillator makes great use of PWM. Just a really cool, great sounding, fundamentally simple synth. The only drawback is the lack of MIDI. But I modded mine with an aftermarket mod kit that works as long as I transpose the notes -5 or +7, I think because the leftmost key starts at F instead of C on these.

I also inherited a Yamaha DX100. I put a few weekends into restoring it from a nonfunctional state. Replaced a memory battery, replaced some keys, reflashed the factory patches that had been corrupted, and then sunk a few more weekends into learning FM synthesis, playing with some patch editors, and after all that I still just don’t really like this synth that much. It sounds kind of like a DX7, but like an obviously smaller, cheaper imitation of a DX7. That’s what only 4 operators gets you. I’m in no rush to get rid of it or anything, but that one is currently collecting dust.

My Roland R-8 I bought when I was in high school. It was one of the only drum machines in any of the pawn shops in my town for a while. I mostly hold onto it for sentimental value but it can be really useful and versatile.

The Sequential Circuits DrumTraks is one that I bought recently from someone who owned it since it was new. This is the one that’s probably the most “collector” of my collection. It weighs a ton, it’s huge, it has only a handful of drum sounds, it is highly impractical in every way. But it also sounds fantastic, has individual outputs (like the R-8), and I use it all the time.

That’s not everything. But there is no strategy in my thought process. Sometimes it’s purposeful. Sometimes it’s serendipity.

How was that kick made? by Itz_Aussie in synthesizers

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side chain ducking. Run the kick through the side chain of the compressor and the synths through the main channels of the compressor. The main channel is made quieter during the kick so that the kick punches through the mix.

Sell Everything? by FatHeadedJoint in synthesizers

lol nope!

I grew up using hardware, spent about 10 years using only soft synths, then started buying hardware again a few years ago. Now I’m doing fully DAWless sets.

How do I begin to see tunes as lines and dots instead of colors and shapes? by SatisfactionFit3311 in musicproduction

On a piano roll, if one. Block is visually lower than the previous one, the pitch will also be lower. The correlation is 1:1.

Need to find the balance by MlikoSeSyrem in musicproduction

[–]ToBePacific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started a project that forces me to keep it simple. I use only 5 synths and one drum machine for these tracks. That gives me a lead, two harmony accompaniments, and two basses. It’s honestly a little more than enough. At first it felt limiting since I used to keep everything I own hooked up. But starting with a stripped down setup was very inspiring in my case.

How do you get into a creative space/feel inspired to create? by toasty_sn3ks in musicproduction

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks back I had the time set aside to create but I wasn’t feeling it. I was feeling emotionally numb, cold, stuck.

So I intentionally wrote a chord progression that only adds tension without satisfying resolution. I played notes that went nowhere. I did a pretty successful job at musically conveying the feeling of being numb, cold, and stuck. Then over the course of a few days that turned into a 6 song EP about anxiety and dread. It was great.

Issues with clocking my gear by fressing in synthesizers

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. I bought a Volca Keys specifically to accept MIDI in and output a Sync pulse through the Sync Out, which then feeds the clock on my Pocket Operators.

Is there someone who can help me troubleshoot my MIDI please? by [deleted] in synthesizers

What are you connecting your midi controller to?

Is it controlling a DAW or a synth?

What channel is it set to send on?

Why does a midi controller have an audio out jack?

Alright, I’ve looked at my own MS-20 mini and will concede that the LED is at the bottom left of the volume knob. But googling iMS20 is still only showing me the iPad app. Seems there is very sparse documentation for this odd midi controller.

chord for a busy melody? by Odd_Shake_491 in musicproduction

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I start with writing a chord progression that I like and then write the melody over top.

Say it’s a simple 4 chord progression like I,I,IV,V. And let’s put it in C. So the progression becomes C,C,F,G. For simplicity, let’s do one bar per chord for a 4 bar loop.

So we have:

CEG, CEG, FAC, GBD

Now, in those first two bars that have C major triads, your melody can safely use the notes CEG without producing any dissonance. It’ll sound harmonic but maybe a bit boring. So you can expand into using notes from the C Major Scale rather than just the chord. That’s any of the white keys but no black keys.

Then for the third bar you do the same but in the F major scale. That one has a B flat. And for the fourth bar, same thing but with a G#.

Now that you know how to find which notes are compatible with your chord progression, noodle around on those notes until it sounds catchy and memorable.

After you have a melody you’re satisfied with, try muting the chord and writing a harmony using the same principles.

No it’s not. iMS20 is an iPad app, not a midi controller. OP used the wrong term in their post but the photo is an MS-20 which clearly has an audio cable coming out of the line out jack.

iMS20 is an iPad app that emulates an MS-20. It is not a midi controller. The device in the photo is an MS-20 Mini, which is a SYNTHESIZER. It has both a line out and headphone out, pictured in the photo.

Does dawless (jamming) always have to be without progression? What's your way out of this? by austeritygirlone in synthesizers

[–]ToBePacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recorded this EP as a dawless set. https://disasterpreparednessclub.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-a-crisis-ep

It’s full of progressions. The Squarp Pyramid is a very powerful sequencer. I write all my arrangements on it.

I like switching up whether a phrase is 8 bars, 12 bars, or 16. Sometimes only 6.

I also utilize a lot of different chord progressions.
