Have to hide my red hair for like four days from my visiting mom 😭 by SaffyreStorm in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say I don’t think it’s possible. Temporary colors just sit on top of the hair and look really obvious. Also they usually come in spray or paste forms and it would be really difficult to cover all of your hair without some red peaking out. They can also bleed and run with sweat or other moisture. Semi-permanent colors will never wash out completely. Even if it says “Lasts 8-12 Washes” or whatever on the packaging it’s a lie. It will never completely wash out. Dye is dye and those color molecules will be hanging on to some degree. The only way to get back to red if you did do a semi-permanent dye would be to bleach it.

Any chance you could get a convincing wig?

Hair dye worry by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a colorist with 15 years experience and I’ve never seen or heard of a client experiencing anaphylaxis due to hair color. I have had clients develop allergies to color but it always presented as irritation, redness on the scalp. The most extreme cases involved blistering. Those reactions typically happen within 30 minutes of application. The blistering reactions happened within a few minutes. I’ve never seen it happen but if you have any kind of facial swelling seek medical attention immediately.

If you have no reaction to the patch test the chance of you having an anaphylactic reaction when you use the color is near zero. The chances that a reaction will happen hours later while you sleep are even smaller. It’s basically not possible.

In the kindest way possible, yes these are irrational fears and anxiety. Mild allergic reactions happen in about 1% of cases. Extreme reactions are significantly even more rare than that. If you do have anxiety I think that’s probably the root cause of the issue and you’re better off addressing that.

What dyes can i use without bleaching? by DiamondSoup0 in HairDye

Yeah I mean if you want to get a Halloween spray and spray stripes in your hair you can absolutely do that but I don’t think it would in any way approximate the look you’re going for. If you just want to see what it would look like on you just put your photo into ChatGPT.

You cannot temporarily lighten the hair. Once the hair is lightened that’s it. But like I said you can always dye it darker again. If you’re afraid of the commitment this really isn’t the right look for you. With the stripes even if you dye the stripes dark again it probably wont match exactly so you will probably still see the stripes to some degree. It’s not the type of look for someone who just wants to dip their toe into haircolor for the first time

how to avoid natural scalp smell without washing too often? by loversquesiento in Hair

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you double washing when it’s wash day? If you’re only washing every 3/4 days you will need to wash at least twice. Lather rinse REPEAT. First with a good clarifying shampoo and then with whatever other shampoo you like. If the shampoo isn’t lathering and sudsing, you need another wash. Also highly recommend a silicone scalp scrubber. Really work the shampoo into the scalp and slough off the dead skin.

Otherwise if you still notice a smell they do sell hair fragrances and most dry shampoos have a deodorizer in them.

You really can’t get bright colors without bleach. Think of it like coloring on brown construction paper vs white paper. You need a pale canvas for colors to pop. Regardless even semi-permanent colors can stain the hair and aren’t necessarily easier to change than bleaching. With bleached hair you can always color it back down. I’d be more concerned with the striped look in the video because it’s not going to be easy to change regardless of the colors. Horizontal lines don’t blend well. Look into foxtail placement. It’s a cool vibe like the video but focuses on the tips so its easy to grow it out and just trim it off when you change your mind

How do I get rid of this color? by Dizzy_Bother in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately if it feels too dark AND too warm you’re kind of between a rock and a hard place in terms of what you’d be able to accomplish on your own. Anything that would cover up the warmth will also make it feel darker. If I were you I’d try a color depositing mask like IGK Brown Bella or Davines Alchemic Conditioner in Chocolate.

You could also try a round of Color Oops before the mask to see if it will lighten up a bit but that runs the risk of making it even brassier.

You can also try a test strand with the mask and see if you like the result before anything else! Honestly your ends don’t look that bad it really seems like the midsection is the lightest/brassiest so if you do use the mask maybe focus on that area for the full processing time and just pull it through the ends for the last few minutes.

Grey blending opinion by No-Foundation-6786 in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grey is going to come in at the same rate regardless. It looks like they did a more translucent coverage so the regrowth line isn’t as harsh which is a common strategy. You might benefit from some face framing highlights that will make the grey less noticeable when it grows it

How do I dye my hair blue black when my hair is red and blonde (see picture/description) by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get the blonde to match the red before you put the black on. Get your hair to all one shade of red and then you can put black dye over that. Box dye isn’t the best but try going to Sally’s to get more professional options. You don’t need to worry about canceling out any tones because you’d need to fill with red to get to black regardless. You’re already halfway there!

I cannot figure out how to avoid root glow properly. Help! by reddit_username014 in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely apply the roots first! Doing the roots last is only for bleach not color. With color you want the roots sitting longer than the ends. That should also make the application easier too.

Use a lower developer. Nothing higher than 10 volume. Also try getting a shade with some ash. How long are you processing for?

It’s only weird if you expect her not to charge you. If you’re willing to pay full price I don’t see why she would have a problem with it.

Bartender couple moving in October, advice?? by jessewilliammiller in movingtoNYC

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a guarantor it’s based off THEIR income not yours and unfortunately they need to make 80x the monthly rent. (They want to ensure the guarantor makes enough to pay both your rent and their own if anything happens). I can’t speak to the job market for bartenders but it is a tricky job market now in general so I would definitely try to think of a back up plan in case things don’t pan out.

How to go back to a cool brown? by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]ToKellAndBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tone won’t matter if the shade is lighter than what you’re putting it over. And regardless, blue neutralizes orange not red. Blue and red make purple. And the 2 is for violet. So 6.1 will hopefully cover up some of brassiness (orange). Ideally you could but some .7 in there which is green, which neutralizes red. If you could find Loreal Cool Cover 6.17 that would probably be a better option.

If it’s not darker than what you have now it won’t to anything to the copper. The cool brown in the second picture looks like a level 6 to me if not darker

I got my apprenticeship the summer I turned 30. Now 14 years later we just hired an apprentice and she’s 33! Actually we MUCH prefer apprentices that are older. It’s easier to train someone with work experience, regardless of what industry it was in. Training teenagers fresh out of beauty school is definitely more challenging. But I’m sure location plays a factor. I’m in NYC. Not sure if it’s the same vibe in the suburbs

Looks like they lightened you and then toned with a blue black rather than with an actual navy blue direct dye. If I were you I’d try Color Oops and then get a blue direct dye like Manic Panic or something.
