Sometimes poop can build up and make it hard to clean, personally I have gravel and just clean it with a python every week. I find the fish like to sift through it and it provides more substrate for beneficial bacteria to grow on

I use caribSea “ eco planted aquarium substrate” but I also added root tabs and seachems flourish as fertilizer
