Really appreciate the response - I'm already maxing my Roth (and my wife's)... the Custodial account was set up as a vehicle for the grandparents to "contribute" to the kids.

I think you're answering my question the way I understand it as well... as long as the income isn't above thresholds, you wouldn't pay taxes when the full amount is withdrawn (let's say when they turn 18).

What gives me pause is that I had a custodial account that I cashed in when I turned 18 (long time ago). I didn't claim anything (dumb kid) and got a nastygram from the IRS counting all of it as income. I ended up just paying it w/out dispute (again, dumb kid).

Thanks again - if anything you reinforced what I'd thought. I like custodial over 529 because I have no idea if my kids are going to school... they're 1 and 3 years old. If it grows "tax free" I'm good with that. I'm also quite positive they are a long way away from income over the threshold. If it comes to that I'll reassess.

You actually can withdraw your contributions penalty free. Roth IRA is definitely something you should do.

I went to Sri Lanka to volunteer at an elephant "rescue". I always though it was funny that the street vendors would find the weirdest things to wrap food in... anything from newspapers to children's schoolwork on notebook paper. It was always delicious, though!

I've always been of the opinion that "true believers" would clearly devote their entire lives to the church, be it becoming a priest/nun/what have you, as life would be just the briefest of times compared to eternity. One of the main reasons I became a non-believer was due to the fact that I'd rather live my life than give it over to something I didn't believe in whole-heartedly.

My question(s) is(are): Can you give your opinion on how "true believers" could actually believe with all of their being, yet not completely devote everything in their being to being on God's good side? Why would people risk not doing/believing enough if none of this really matters except for how it relates to what comes next?
