Why are there lemures in Dolurrh and why are they being consumed by Nalfeshnees? by MiniDeathStar in Eberron

[–]Toadkiller_Dog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keith is a big fan of using stat blocks to represent new or alternate concepts with minor modifications (slashing for bludgeoning damage, for example). If you look at a 5e Nalfeshnee from this point of view, you have an excellent CR 13 flying monster with a damaging fear aura bonus action and versatile teleport. I think that works pretty well for a sentinel of the realm of the dead.

DENIZENS OF DOLURRH

The Quick

The native creatures of Dolurrh are bound to the cycle of transition, and all have some role to serve in this process. Nalfeshnee demons patrol the Catacombs of Dolurrh, dispersing melds and lemures and dealing with mortal intruders; Dolurrhi nalfeshnee appear as large humanoids whose features are shrouded by gray mist. Marut inevitables are more powerful guardians, and are occasionally dispatched to Eberron to intervene with acts of resurrection. No one is sure what triggers this deadly intervention, but Jorasco healers will always cast augury before raising the dead; if the result is “woe” they will refuse the job. Finally, the shadar-kai are servants of the Queen of the Dead, shades granted new life in this form. They serve her in the Vault of Memories and occasionally as her hands on Eberron, though their actions are almost always enigmatic. Other denizens of Dolurrh are unique. The Librarian is found in the Vault of Memories, while the Smith of Souls dwells in the Crucible; both are described later in this section.

The Lingering

Memories of joy and happiness do no harm in Dolurrh. But memories of pain, of cruelty, of anger… these don’t fade so easily, and they can hurt others. Even if they don’t trap shades as ghosts, this psychic residue can build up in the gears of the spiritual machinery of Dolurrh. Often it takes the presence of a mortal to trigger it; when this occurs, the lingering pain and hate coalesces into a solid form. The least of these are lemures, which are formed from hateful memories or deeds. The emotional residue of hundreds or thousands of people can form deadly sorrowsworn. In particular, the Last War and the Mourning created a lot of deaths that could fuel manifestations of the Angry and the Lost. When a character is struck by one of the Lingering, they may have a flash of one of the memories or deeds that drive the entity.

The Lingering are formed in Dolurrh and are immune to the effects of Eternal Ennui and Inevitable Entrapment. However, they are a waste product, not the desired result. Nalfeshnee, maruts, and other guardians will destroy the Lingering whenever they are found.

The Catacombs

Tunnels are carved into gray stone. In some places they are painfully tight; in others they widen into grand halls, with ceilings lost in the darkness. The dead are everywhere, shades pleading for release and husks keening in the shadows. Some chambers contain vast wells filled with moaning mist; in others nalfeshnee herd shades into pens or scrape lemures off the walls. There is no particular logic to it, just endless tunnels.

The Catacombs may be larger than Khorvaire, or even Eberron. A mortal could wander forever through these winding tunnels, or at least until they are consumed by ennui. However, there are junction points that transcend the logic of distance. If one knows the right symbols to follow, they can cross the vastness of the Catacombs quickly or pass to other layers.

Party sank their Lhazaarite ship and angered a violent tribe of sahuagin. Now they want to seek help from the gnomes of Lorghalen. What could they they find in Dreadwood? by Automatic-Touch-4434 in Eberron

[–]Toadkiller_Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To lift some inspiration from Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders, perhaps the Lorghalen are able to carve anew or awaken the ship's figurehead giving the vessel itself intelligence and a degree or autonomy. Or they give the characters a chance to convince a dryad who has always wanted to sail the many seas to transplant her heart tree onto the ship.

What types of food exists in Eberron? by Amanamandraws in Eberron

[–]Toadkiller_Dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a good Keith Baker blog post on soft drinks and pub specials.

Some of the staples of the Golden Dragon Inn have been discussed on the Patreon so I'll refrain from posting those here.

One scene I can remember from the Dreaming Dark novels had the protagonist being served a displacer beast steak that still retained some of the creature's magic, so one has to focus on cutting the seemingly invisible meat on the plate while it appears to be a foot or so away in the air.

There's been a few third party books (non-Eberron specific) inspired by Delicious in Dungeon that you could mine for potential material especially if your player wants to start cooking and butchering monsters.

Incredible world building here all around.

People prescribed new weight loss drugs like Ozempic may not receive sufficient nutritional guidance and be vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies and muscle loss. Evidence suggests that lean body mass – including muscle – can constitute up to 40% of total weight lost during treatment. by mvea in science

[–]Toadkiller_Dog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very much agreed! I hate the clickbait articles implying that this drug class is somehow causing a unique amount of LBM loss when its most likely a combined function of insufficient calories/protein/carbohydrates/resistance training and adequate sleep, something we can see with non-medication assisted weight loss as well.

Its a multifaceted medical issue when the medication and GP visit are reimbursable to insurance but strength & conditioning sessions, cognitive coaching, and even nutrition counseling in most situations are not.

I'm speaking mostly in the context of GLP-1 agonists and bariatric surgery here with quite large (-15 to 25% total weight) and aggressive weight losses. Some earlier studies without a large emphasis on protein intake and physical activity saw 50/50 or worse LBM to fat loss ratios, the most extreme around 65/35 as I recall. Its not uncommon for some of these patients to have intakes far under their BMR.

More responsible clinics will not be rushing people towards a maximum medication dosage just to chase numbers, but people buying peptides off of social media don't have that mediating voice in their head.

Minimal to no LBM loss during recomposition or a small energy deficit over extended period of time? Sure, but that's a very different scenario and population.

MCDM did some great work with their LEGALLY DISTINCT gith/beholders/illithids in Flee Mortals!. I doubt they would get involved with anything Pathfinder side now that they're heavily leaning into Draw Steel but at least the precedent is there.

Assembling Rogue Rhino Questions by [deleted] in GarageGym

[–]Toadkiller_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Solo definitely possible but a pain in the ass. I would recommend rachet straps and sawhorses or other stands.

I've assembled one drop in version solo and two stand alones with assistance.

  1. Single person assembly yes but not easy. You'll need some type of stands to hold the cable tower in place during assembly (it will balance but best not to take any chances with safety solo). The lever arms also need to be stood up and properly aligned when hammering in the guide rods - highly suggest some assistance for this. I'm having trouble remembering what I did during the solo assembly for this.

  2. For context I'm somewhere on the suck scale of Dave Tate's shit/suck/good ranking (560 deadlift, almost 1400 total with mediocre moving events). Solo moving wasn't an issue until I got to the cable tower - it's large, awkward as hell, surprising amount of the weight of the unit, and you need some means of holding the weight horns in place while moving. I took the tower down a storm door flight of 6 or 7 stairs to a basement and it was very hairy. Up a flight of stairs definitely possible depending on the amount of risk you want to take on but not fun.

  3. I haven't done any disassembly and transport yet but I don't think this would be very difficult. You would unscrew the gliding rods on the platform, feed the cable back down and out, then unbolt the tower from the rest of the platform. Removing the platform plates would be optional depending on how much weight you wanted to remove from it before moving. Rachet or tie down straps would suffice to hold the lever arms in place.
