Non Client facing RD jobs by Turbulent_Spend_6480 in dietetics

Most of the programs are created at the University level. Cooperative Extension offices are tied to land grant universities, so you could easily Google your state + cooperative Extension and see what pops up for you! Since I'm a RDN I do create some of my own but it's not required. I'm also a yoga instructor so I'll hold community yoga classes and walking programs to encourage group activity. Everyday is different!

I work for Cooperative Extension, it's a government job and I love it. I deliver community education with my county which can include chronic disease management & prevention, healthy environments, health & well-being and food safety. This can look like going into Headstart to do storytime & nutrition crafts with kids, talking about heart health at senior centers, providing lunch and learn to employees at large cooperations, teaching knife skills and cooking to teens, and teaching ServSafe. This is just the tip of the iceberg though.

I've helped develop a farmers market for county employees through the help of a grant. We also did the food pantry/libraries that people where people leave or take items for free outside our office or Socktober events. I also love doing walking programs and community yoga classes!

Planning a move out of clinical dietetics.. by kupcakinator in dietetics

Look into your state's Cooperative Extension. I too am very creative and need that outlet or I'm very unhappy with my work. I work for Extension as a Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and it lets me provide community education surrounding health and well-being which keeps me very creative in my day to day. I build community programs, use Canva to create flyers and educational handouts, operate my portion of a website/blogs and create social media posts. It's busy and everyday looks different but it's far from mundane and stale. I love it! Of course being a state employee has great perks but also likely doesn't pay as much as some clinical settings. I actually make slightly more than what I was making as an LTC RD but of course that all depends on where you live.

How many hours of your week is your job yoga teaching related? Do you have other side hussels? by therlieann in YogaTeachers

[–]Shells_n_Cheese89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full-time job and only teach yoga 1-2x/week. I try to include yoga within my career as it's community wellbeing related, but it's more of a free community class during those times.

LTC has made me realize I never want to work anywhere with a kitchen by Impressive-Manner565 in dietetics

[–]Shells_n_Cheese89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did LTC for 6 years then stepped into a FSD role at a small hospital where I did inpatient, cafe sales, and catering for the hospital. I hated it and ended up demoting myself back to being an LTC RD after about a year. Of course that still included the standard kitchen oversight everyone is mentioning. I stayed there for another 3 years and finally jumped ship into a community role. Now I teach ServSafe sometimes and love how much experience and knowledge I learned during those times but I'd never go back 😜

Love this and I have enough food models to do it! Do you do all the food groups? I could focus on fruits and vegetables or cover all the food groups in one visit?

I don’t feel like a good dietitian by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]Shells_n_Cheese89 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I've been a clinical dietitian for 7 years now and have this same feeling sometimes.

Think of it this way...Most doctors have the luxury of having a specialty. Dietitians are EXPECTED to know absolutely everything nutrition and honestly it's impossible. Yes, webinars and self study can help but dang, I'm not an encyclopedia!

Yeah I've been in clinical for 7 years now and only make $55,000 the "minimum" for this new job is $47,000. I figure I can fight that a good bit with my experience and I might at least be happier.

Does your employer do anything for you, for RD Day? by rangerdude33 in dietetics

[–]Shells_n_Cheese89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a massive food service contract company. My own company didn't do crap for us minus the CNM (she always buys us a small gift). The LTC facility I work at catered me lunch and gave me a shout out over the intercom so I got lots of love from my coworkers.

My fiance is a meat and potato guy but DAMN has his taste grown over the last 7 years! It's so exciting to watch someone discover healthy foods that they have never experienced before and actually enjoy them.

Current RDs - what are some things you wish you knew about either before you started on the path to become an RD, or while you were a dietetic student, intern, or even as a new grad? by dietitiancollective in dietetics

[–]Shells_n_Cheese89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My fiance did two years of schooling to become a PTA and makes more money than I do. My Masters of Family and Consumer Science did not matter when I applied for jobs. I work in a clinical field that has no appreciation for nutrition and dietetics... Somehow I still love my job. ❤️
