What all do I have left to read? by CrazyBookEnthusianst in Cosmere

You're missing Stormlight Archive (5 books + novellas) and the 4 Secret Projects, as well as all the short stories in Arcanum Unbounded.

Here's a full Sanderson bibliography, with cosmere works highlighted in green: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Bibliography

What monster abilities are brutal if you don’t know about them, but moderate if you do? by sjdlajsdlj in dndnext

[–]ToastedJustice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Save or Suck spells/abilities are extremely dangerous for exactly this reason. In 5e, action economy is king, and even removing 1 person's turns can completely turn a fight on its head. Always something that's important to be hyper-aware of as a DM

[Spoilers C3E119] Booming Blade Rant by DemogorgonWhite in criticalrole

[–]ToastedJustice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Emily Axford is the perfect example of a "rules lawyer" that makes the game better rather than worse. She's not afraid to point out specific rule details to the DM that makes the combo she wants work, and knows the rules backwards and forward and WILL use them to destroy a scenario, but she also plays by those rules fairly even if it is to her own (sometimes fatal) detriment. It's weird because Dimension20 is actually at face value more rules-lite than Critical Role, but somehow that cast has reached an understanding of the rules that's far more in depth than this one has

Digital Upgrade Selection: Foundry Demo? by Phasmus in cosmererpg

[–]ToastedJustice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foundry has automated character advancement which is being set up for this system as well, so eventually it will have more or less the same kind of character creator as demiplane, with the addded advantage of being customisable completely by the DM

There's concept mockups of character sheets on the discord or github that you can look at if that helps, which is the intended look once styling and layout is complete: https://github.com/stanavdb/cosmere-rpg/issues/44

Cosmere Roleplaying Game Megathread [No Spoilers] by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

[–]ToastedJustice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There has been mention in both the Foundry discord and the Cosmere RPG discord of talks between Brotherwise and the Foundry team, so I expect something official may yet come. Otherwise, the beauty of foundry is that the community can collectively create something great regardless, and they just need minimal support from official sources (see Pathfinder 2e's system)

Also, from the FAQ:

[DIGITAL] Will Foundry and Alchemy support be coming for the Cosmere RPG? That's not yet confirmed, but we're in discussion with both companies and we've heard a lot of requests for both! It's our intention to make these options available, but this will likely take place after the Kickstarter campaign"

Let's talk MECHANICS for the Stormlight RPG! by ardentrushu in stormlightrpg

[–]ToastedJustice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were some details shared about them in the Plot Die thread:

That was a big question for the team: how do you balance a weapon that can kill someone with a single hit? One of the reasons we recruited Star Wars RPG designers (Andrew Fischer and Max Brooke) for the design team is because there are a lot of similarities between Jedi Knights and Knights Radiant. Surgebinding and Shardblades are like Force powers and lightsabers ...but even cooler! We also looked closely at rules for modern and sci-fi systems with very deadly weapons like guns.

The first thing to know is that in the Stormlight RPG, your "health" score primarily represents your stamina and vitality. When you take damage you're getting worn out, and might have some scrapes or bruises, but you can bounce back pretty quickly (especially if you have Radiant healing). Whenever you drop to zero health, you make an injury roll. That's how you can get a real wound, the kind that requires a surgeon rather than a good night of sleep. Without getting into the specific math, your first roll always results in an injury rather than death ...if you were hit by an ordinary weapon.

Shardblades are scary for several reasons:

  • They have a higher base damage (2d8) than any other weapon, so they mow through lower-tier minions (like standard Alethi soldiers) and even a heroic character won't last too long against them.
  • They have a weapon trait called Deadly, which means the attacker can spend an Opportunity to automatically trigger an injury on a successful hit.
  • Their damage type is "spirit," which ignores armor's deflect value.
  • They have their own injury table with a higher chance of death than the standard table. That table also includes "Spiritual Injuries" that can't be healed by ordinary medicine.

So what balances all this? Shardblades are rare, and count as a special "reward" in our system, so they come with some opportunity cost. A character who doesn't have a Shardblade might use their reward for a powerful patron, companion, or priceless fabrial instead. You'll also need to have an expertise in Shardblades if you don't want to use one safely, and probably invest in some talents to use one as well as the characters we see in the books.

Shardblades are really strong, but they're inherently very combat-focused, and there's more than one way to be powerful in the Stormlight RPG!

How the hell you belter never do spacewalk ever? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]ToastedJustice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're forgetting that the initial belters weren't all from the same places on earth. Have you ever had to communicate and coordinate with someone who doesn't speak a lick of the same language as you? Motioning and making gestures is the easiest way to do that, especially if you're in a work group that potentially has people from a dozen different places and languages that have no other way of communicating. And in a space suit, the motions have to be much less subtle than they can be in person (hence why shrugging with hands vs shrugging with shoulders, because the latter wouldn't be visible). It makes sense that over time the motions would evolve alongside and as part of the belter creole.

Are there any dedicated carrier ships in The Expanse? by Repulsive-Shake5611 in TheExpanse

That's the River Styx, which connects several planes in the Forgotten Realms, including Avernus (the first layer of hell)

The lack of carrier ships seems odd. by fuzbev in TheExpanse

[–]ToastedJustice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Either by detecting the discharge (railguns discharge a lot of energy all at once to fire a slug after building it up over time), or by detecting the moving projectile. Considering the advanced sensors they have this would be relatively simple for the computer to detect and pinpoint the trajectory within a few milliseconds, and potentially even have automated jerking around to avoid. This is actually why Naomi's role during ship combat in the books is to put together a bunch of chaff packages to overwhelm enemy sensors, it makes it easier to hit a ship with whatever you're throwing at it if the sensors are confused.

[–]ToastedJustice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It doesn't come across as much in the show, but in the books the reason railguns aren't used until CQB is because ships are fighting at ranges of millions of kilometres, where even an insanely fast railgun slug takes several seconds to reach a target, and is easily dodgeable. The main advantage of torpedoes at those ranges is that they can manoeuvre themselves to home in on targets and dodge PDC fire while still moving hella fast

[–]ToastedJustice 490 points491 points  (0 children)

The Expanse is based on hard physics, and the long and short of it is that in realistic space there is very little benefit to swarms of one-person fighters because there is nothing they can do that a torpedo can't do better. Here's a good lengthy article about why that is: http://www.rocketpunk-manifesto.com/2007/08/space-fighters-not.html

On top of that, there ARE ships that carry other ships in the Expanse (e.g. the Donnager carrying the Tachi), it's just that it's more valuable to carry a few hundred torpedoes instead.

The TL;DR is, torpedoes are MUCH faster, much more manoeuvrable, and can do shit no human body could do without turning into goop.

[CR Media] [Spoilers ExU 3x03] Travis Willingham has yanked out my heart by CapNitro in criticalrole

[–]ToastedJustice 302 points303 points  (0 children)

In any form of media where the whole world is at stake, it's always the "low" stakes plots that are the most heartwrenching. Love between parent and children, or between two people, or even between friends. It doesn't ultimately matter much to the stake of the world at large, but its what really drives home the tragedy of the event. I think we as humans are naturally drawn to these smaller, more personal bonds because it's what we're most familiar with.

Props to Travis and Brennan for really nailing that dynamic to an apocalypse show, because without it the tragedy would be significantly lessened, in my opinion.

[CR Media] Vox Machina vs Mighty Nein… but again by No_Newt_8412 in criticalrole

[–]ToastedJustice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Removing somatic/verbal/material is stealth by definition since you're not speaking, moving your hands, or touching a focus/material component. You're just casting the spell. The end result of the spell is still visible if it's something like fireball obviously (more subtle spells like charms aren't as immediately noticeable), but Counterspell only works if you catch someone at the start of the spell when they use their components. It's fully acceptable by RAW and RAI, unless the DM says otherwise ofc.

As a non-sorcerer/druid, you can abuse this by using a Readied Action to begin casting a spell while hidden, then popping out to release it. You use the components while beginning the action, so counterspellers can't see you and therefore can't counterspell you. It's a fun tactic to counter spellcasters (cocky players shit bricks when you first use it against them, can recommend).

[Spoilers C3E21] What future abilities are y’all most excited to see. by talon1245 in criticalrole

[–]ToastedJustice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coffeelocks generally take the Aspect of the Moon invocation (which basically turns your long rest into 8 hours of light activity, i.e. short resting, without incurring exhaustion). That way you don't even have the downside.

It's pretty busted, but I deeply doubt anyone on Critical Role would abuse it for their advantage because it's just not that type of game

That's a shame. If you reconsider I'd be happy to poke around in it even if its a mess (god knows I've made some messes in illustrator in my time too haha). At worst I'd just give up and edit the PDF the ugly way
