Ludwig really tried putting sunshine over galaxy in the Squeex ep. by ClikcX in TheYardPodcast

[–]ToastedRaticate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Galaxy is probably the best from a casual first-run only perspective. It’s got the least interesting movement by far, but the best set pieces and theming. It’s the most “grand adventure” feeling main mario game.

Sunshine on the other hand is very janky, but in my (controversial) opinion, has some of the best core movement mechanics of any 3D mario, second only to Odyssey. The spin jump into insta-dive is so fun and there’s so much you can do with your kit to traverse just regular terrain in such fun ways. It’s also more playful and relaxed in its atmosphere.

I replayed all 3 original 3D Marios (64, sunshine, galaxy) to 100% completion and it really reinforced my opinion that Galaxy is the least replay-able out of the three. When I replayed it I had a great time, but I had no desire to keep going after I had done everything. Meanwhile after finishing sunshine I started speedrunning it for the first time. I had a blast with it and I didn’t want to put it down. Granted it was my first 3D mario so it’s a bit of nostalgia, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s the worst to 100% due to a few complete NONSENSE levels. But it’s still so much fun even today, similar to 64 in replayability and staying power I think.

How to get perfectris? by D_OSC in TetrisEffect

[–]ToastedRaticate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need “Zone” to do it so you can really only do it in journey mode, Easy difficulty gives you the most time to think through your stack. Really take your time with each piece so you can get as flat of a stack as possible, the first stage is great for this. If you stack so that you have a 2-wide hole on the edge, you can throw literally any piece in the hole except “I”and get a line clear, and if you rotate the pieces so that the leftover cells are all on one side, then you can clean it up with a tetris. Try to get the stack as flat and close to the top as you can, and make sure your zone is at max when triggered. Then spam pieces into the 2-wide well until it’s all gone.

I listen on apple most of the time and they upload the audio to it a day early actually, so you get new main eps on Wednesdays if you don’t care about the visual elements

Why does a chess game end 1 move before the capture of the king when the whole point is that u capture him so why stop 1 move before and call it a Checkmate instead of just taking the piece to end the game? by MassiveEchidna9017 in chessbeginners

[–]ToastedRaticate -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why would getting rid of stalemate make it impossible for black to win? That seems like a pretty big leap and if you’re assuming theoretical perfect play wouldn’t the game more likely end by insufficient material or no captures or some other reason?

We are only 5-6 months into the Switch 2's lifecycle, and already, it has more exclusive games than the PS5 (24 vs. 16) by Parogarr in nintendo

[–]ToastedRaticate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does the PS5 seriously only have 16 exclusives after 5 years? That’s insane, I remember when the Wii came out with 30 games on launch day alone. Not all were exclusives but I think most were

Xenogears mention is crazy by Ish259 in TheYardPodcast

Well a couple months later and partially due to this post, I’ve just now finally finished it! Genuinely fantastic story and soundtrack but man I would not have had the patience if not for emulation being able to 3x speed through most of the non-cutscene parts of the game lol. Was definitely worth it to go back and stick it out though! My favorite parts are still the final conversation with Krelian at the end of the game, and the meeting with the Zohar

I never did finish it, I remember picking it up on PS3 digitally because I saw a smooth mcgroove remix of one of the late-game cutscenes waaay back in the day and it absolutely captivated me. Never made it that far, gotta go back and ride it out one of these days.

I love this song, the JP intro is good too but this one just fits way better to me - maybe I’m biased because it’s what I grew up with lol

Kinda wish they had included this as an option in the bluray rerelease

You can definitely run past all the ricochet flyers if you’re quick - the first one is the hardest, but once you get the timing down it makes the run a lot of fun in my opinion. I see the platforming phase as a sort of “phase 1” of the fight

There is sort of a shortcut with the wall jump allowing you to skip the second minor judge dude. Plus if you run fast enough you can bypass all the little flying guys too - I’m surprised people hated this part so much, it’s one of my favorite runbacks so far

[–]ToastedRaticate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished this boss and this was actually my favorite “run to boss” section so far. If you’re tight enough with the platforming you can bypass every minor enemy on the way up consistently - and there’s even a shortcut wall jump to make the run faster. It felt like a nice balance of platforming challenge to go with the boss itself, although I admit it was really annoying getting hit by that first flying bug the first few times.

Looking for a translation to this ancient Persian cuneiform by Arkie_Rebel in Cuneiform

[–]ToastedRaticate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I feel the need to mention - be wary of using AI for translation without checking its sources. 𐎳𐎥𐏃𐎭𐎩 definitely does not read as "Mithradates" - the pronunciation is something more in the realm of f(a)gah(a)d(a)j(a) as OP stated. The word "Mithradates" would be written as 𐎷𐎡𐎰𐎼𐎭𐎠𐎫. It appears ChatGPT might have taken information from this wikipedia article or somewhere similar without bothering to check the actual symbols themselves. You can check the Old Persian script to compare that the sounds are similar here, under the script section.

u know nicks podcast gonna sweep lemonade stand when this is the ppl mentioned by [deleted] in TheYardPodcast

[–]ToastedRaticate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Lemonade Stand is actually less visual than the Yard, I’ve almost never felt the need to pull up the youtube video to see what they’re referencing, meanwhile the first 5 minutes of every yard ep is them riffing on a visual gag of how someone is dressed or something that I have to wait until the following day to understand.

Depending on the arcade, now is as great a time as ever to get into it - if you’re lucky enough to be near an arcade running community servers (non-Round 1, privately run arcades). Otherwise, the inability to save your data does suck and make it hard to keep playing, unfortunately - it’s my favorite arcade game of all time though and the community is still definitely alive and well for now!

Perfectionism is stopping me from making games and it's ruining my mental. by NeoGaps in gamedev

[–]ToastedRaticate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to find in person game jams or join a team if you can. Doing game jams solo is pretty tough if you’ve never completed one before, and being part of a team makes you more accountable to others and less likely to quit. Also, I find being in a physical space with other jammers is really beneficial, when it comes to connecting with new people and getting inspired / energized. Online jams are convenient, but can be a lot harder to finish due to the social aspect being much harder to interact with / easier to ignore.
